thank you for the educational video. the "Hakka Explained" video was what brought me to this brilliant channel in the first place a year ago. I am Hakka and 3 generations before me settled in the modern-day Malaysian state of Sarawak and I always wondered what was the catalyst for my family's migration overseas. Like many other Hakka families, it is impossible to tell. Nevertheless, videos like these help me understand more about my roots.

"Punti" is Hakka for "local". In Cantonese, it's "Puntei". The Punti people were basically the Cantonese people. Their animosity extended to Malaya where, during the 19th century, 2 major triads fought each other over control of the tin mining industry. The 2 triads were the Hai San (Hakka) & the Ghee Hin (Cantonese). The British intervened and the war finally ended.

@Daniel Boey Not only in Malaya. The Hakka migrated to Taiwan after most fertile lands were cultivated by Minnan-Hokien people. They also fought Many wars with the Minanese and indigenous peoples. Outwardly Hakka seemed to be a disadvantaged group. But many Minanese (mainland China and Taiwan), Cantonese, Chaozhou people described them as greedy and land grabbing dialect group. Every group has good and bad people. Don't put a stigma on them and be open minded.

My great grandfather also came to Borneo island along with many other Hakka too, probably already 5 generations if i were not wrong. there is also called "Punthi-Hak" which probably refer to Hakka who already aquired some land and settled like my great grandfather and other Hakka here in Borneo.

@Daniel Boy @ son of heaven In Semenanjung Malaysia some many years ago Hakka who are born and bred in Malaysia also called themselves Punti Hak. They want to differ themselves from those Hakka born in China which are called Tongsan Hak. 唐山客. In China Guangdong Province there are two Prefectures, 梅州市 and 河源市 there are nearly 100% Hakka. So there were and are Punti as well as there are very few other dialek group. The Hakka is a relative term used by the imperial dynasties government to identify residents who newly migrated to lands which were already developed by the Puntis which already organised into villages and has ancestral temples,祠堂. In some Cantonese and Teochew counties, late commers Hakka still managed to cultivate new farming lands and form small Hakka villages among established Punti villages

@@laurencechan470 : You need to know that... the Qing dynasty... they were the mongolians and manchurians. The original Hans... were from the Song dynasties... and a few genuine Hans chinese are left inside China. Many individuals today, are actually mixed race. Mixed with mongolians (Qing dynasty)... and also koreans (Jin dynsty).... The last few ruling genuine Hans chinese were (Ming dynasty) And (Song dynasty). This is why.. when "Taiping Rebellion".... (太平 - 天國 - 運動 = Pacific - Heavenly Kingdom - Exercise ) took place... it was a clash of the Pacific (meaning, those from outside of China, the foreigners).... or the fight about the foreign trades... basically. I now get why... some people, like, the genuine cantonese and Ming's people.. literally would have second wives.. or mistresses in hope to continue to expand their own legacies. Cos frankly... why shouldn't they live as genuine chinese, and on their own turfs any more ?? And today, in Malaya... and SE Asian... so many people are now.. they intermarried with those local tribes. And aren't even chinese any more. Even if they have Hans Chinese names. Shouldn't they follow the rights... to actually erase those chinese written names.. and assimilate into those societies already? Cos the war is already lost. No more Chinese.

Interesting to learn about this history. I am from Qingxi area in Dongguan. I've always heard people refer to non Hakka speaking locals as Bunti. I think our family have settle there for many generations but I just realized that village was not our village and we invaded it generations ago. I just didn't know because we immigrated to the US when I was a kid. There are some Bundi villages amongst our majority Hakka town but we seem to not associate with them much. But it makes sense now. Come to think of it, all the surrounding Hakka villages probably belong to Bundi clans. I only found out just by asking my dad this stuff out of curiosity. What a tragic time.

You also need to remember that, the English alphabet romanisation of the chinese language of "punti" 本地 and "hakka".... 客家.... So why would the chinese character "客" (guest) be used here ? If the individual is a foreigner to that specific areas? If you watch the old actual movies about imperial times, then you would know that, some cities were gated, and they were closed off, to outsiders. That is appropiate, and it tries to follow Imperial Laws. All laws are applied to the people living inside the city itself. And anybody else is a foreigner. A migrant to the area, and the region. It had always been this way.... So why are people acting like, "because you have the internet, everything can be yours, even if it is owned by somebody else" ??? Why are people fighting to this extreme ??? The words "Punti" and "Hakka"... were the Westerners trying to put some kind of orders, and understanding, in order to do trades. This is why, you would find old documents, with such words in them... Cos to try to "smooth" the feelings after the second world war, this is what took place. Well.. cos you invaded those people, and those people ran off... Well.. this is possibly, why now.. the "national security laws" were enacted in HK as well.... Cos surely, some people are allowed to live on their own land, and their own turfs, right ? Even the house that I live in here in the UK.. (and I class myself as a "punti".. is owned by a Lord.).... and in a way, I am only "renting" the space.. as I live.. and I pay my taxes etc. This is why I need to earn money, to keep living. So when does.. the calm.. will happen for China ? When ?

Punti is not a clan. Pen Di Ren (本地人) literally means a native or locally born person. The whole conflict was between nativists vs immigrants. Even today, that term is still used in many areas with native Chinese populations to refer to themselves in contradistinction to recent immigrants. For example, the descendants of the Hakkas who migrated to Singapore would refer to themselves as pen di ren to distinguish themselves from newcomers from China.

@Asianometry I am a descendant of a Punti. My ancestors lived in Taishan county for 30 over generations, which is the most ravaged county in the Hakka-punti animosity regions. During the Taiping Rebellion the occupying soldiers and officers were mostly Hakkas. Like you said most local Hakkas were farming workers for the Punti landowners. When Taiping soldiers came, these local Hakkas and Hakkas from surrounding counties ganged up with Taiping soldiers and seized lands from the Punti owners. With the collapsed of Taiping Rebellion the Punti owners gathered a mighty force to drive out the Hakkas Many died from fights. The Qing government settled the Hakkas of the Taisan County to a southern most township of Chixi赤溪鎮 bordering the sea. Many Hakkas from the 4 Siyi 四邑counties of Taishan, Kaiping, xinhui, Enping were settled to Hainan(before the feuds has very few Hakkas), Guangxi, Southern Hunan etc to avoid further bkoodsheds. There is a Cantonese proverb: 客家霸地主 Hakka seizing land from Punti, often heard in Hongkong movies and dramas. Cantonese Old timers discouraged children from marrying Hakkas. .

Japan has a sophisticated system that actually keep things separate and legitimate as well. If you understand something then you understand something. Day chu = Landlord.... lol... I used to think, why do I need to pray in front of an actual alter with the day chu. I realised that is because that location is where my ancestors put down roots. Western philosophy calls it a religion or calls it a philosophy. How about seeing it as an actual method for documentation and to keep unity of the family clan ? punti actually means local people or "originnal sons of the soil" who have already settled the area for many generations. Is like when irish immigrants escaping potato famine fled to america there was already irish and english people living in america for many many generations so though all are irish but the new comers are seen as guest or sometimes as invaders, so it is also with the hakka in china, even though all are chinese the word hakka means guest was a derogatory word given by the locals to these new comers.

To say that the Punti or the Cantonese migrated out of China is not accurate! Most of them were sold as slaves or labourers and to be exploited in overseas. The Qing government is one of the major factor of these wars as the Qing(Manchurians) were more than happy to see the Han Chinese(both Hakka & Cantonese were Han Chinese) killing each and other as the Manchus were the minority. The Qing dynasty turned a blind eye to the conflicts and even encourage these wars initially until it was out of control. This is the same as the British's divide and rule strategy. The Manchus were a minority and they always had this feared of a united Han Chinese overturning their government. Many older generation Cantonese and Hakka still hated each other because of these wars where the horror stories were pasted down generations after generations for the overseas Chinese.

In Hawaii, around this time, Chinese were recruited to come to Hawaii to work on the sugar plantations. In "Chinese in Hawaii: A Historical and Demographic Perspective" by Nordyke and Lee, once their labor contracts were over, most Chinese stayed and built their communities. "The majority were Cantonese, or Punti, from the Chungshan district in the lower part of the Pearl River Delta. A significant group, speaking variants of Southern Min dialect, also originated from areas in Chungshan. About one fourth were Hakkas..... there were also small numbers from Sze Yap and other districts." There were some problems between the groups but after several generations, intermarrying with the local population, these conflicts are non existent, and they've become part of Hawaii's multi ethnic culture.

Punti = 本地 and it is used by Cantonese speakers to refer to themselves relative to somebody who is a migrant (外省人), which in this case is the Hakkas (客家). Hakka is a Cantonese term that is phonetically translated into English and it roughly means guests. Not true, while the Taiping thought of themselves as Christian, they were not accepted by the West as they were anti-west too. They believed that God does not resides and dictate by the West and as such, they were not supported by them although they were free to preach. The leader considered himself a brother of Jesus and had visions of God himself and does not bow down to the Western missionaries. The Taiping leaders were Hakka and also with a lot of the minorities support and they control the South for more than 50 years. They started the first communes in China based on the earlier chapters of the Bible.

And in fact, there might have been people, even if the figures were not beyond 100k people. But there were people there. Just not in the millions. So when people were "dictated to move to the coasts"... by the so called Qing dynasities... this is whereby a war broke out.. the assumption that nobody was there.. and then the people came back to defend their homes and everything.... maybe somebody sent the signal.. but in the end, this is why they broke out in war. Around 1 million people died. So who were these people that died ? Why did they come back then ??? Or did those families or established registered residents, called "their relatives" from nearby to fight back this invasion ??? What do you think really happened ???? Did they went to their local provincial governor and called for back up ? What do you think happened and why the 1 million in deaths ????
