As a native Fujian-er, I wanna say this situation is much more complex than most people can imagine. Even people from different banks of the same brook can find that what they speak are absolutely mutual unintelligible. Nobody knows exactly how many dialects Fujian has. The Chinese language is based on logogram writing system instead of phonetic, so the writing exerts little restrictions on pronunciation. That is why Chinese dialects can be absolutely mutual unintelligible when speaking, but in writing, especially in formal form, They can communicate with each other effectively.

haha I am from Wenzhou, but to be honest, I grew up in there until 16, but I am bad at speaking this dialect, my younger brother probably has never spoken it, it is a trend of the younger generation has started forgetting their beautiful native tongue due to the policy of compulsory use of Mandarin. I am quite jealous of ppl who could speak their dialects well.

I've been to wenzhou 6 times for work. i remember some years ago they had a big fire there...very sad. i love yongjia area too (the original name of wenzhou actually)...there's an amazing hotel which is marble inside. i stayed in chinese overseas hotel in the city centre but ate also in the Sheridan on the top floor in an italian restaurant where there were Ferraris and Lamborghinis. thing is the factory is out of town and on the way u see the real China...mud everywhere, a tar river where stones don't make a noise when u throw them in, poverty, pollution and misery basically...but love visiting anyway.

the Oxford Dictionary translation of 方言 to dialect is very problematic and obsolete honestly, linguistic researchers have agreed upon a new word called topolect thats more to the point of the chinese situation, and people have to get that this is actually the last logogram language left in use on the surface of earth and its standards of judging dialects and languages obviously will differ and complicate from the usual phonetically alphabetizable linguistic world of anywhere outside of china. With that being said, 方言 is actually not precisely dialect, 方 means a region, and 言 is language, 方言itself should be translated as regional language or a sub-language of the main language commonly shared by a large bank of 70k+ written characters and not necessarily use the same standard of expressions but grammatically and ideologically all largely communicatable through writing, is that clear enough?. In what way do you think it merely insinuate the English word dialect that means an alphabetizable language has different accentuated versions using more than 90percent the same words in expressions ?? Thus i dare say: This was obviously either a lost in translation in english or a very bigoted and unnecessary online debate thats completely waste of time and lack of scientific linguistic and cultural difference observer attitude 😂
