We all have to agree the fact that Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci really stole every scenes they were in..
@NateSean3 жыл бұрын
Stanley Tucci doesn't steal any scene he's in. A professional gift wrapper is flown in from Europe, using only the finest wrapping paper made exclusively from shaved gold. The scenes are individually wrapped and presented with the ribbons made from a silk that can only be harvested from the rarest species of caterpillar that grow in a remote Chinese village. The boxes are then neatly organized and placed in Stanley Tucci's dressing room. The Hunger Games blew half of its budget on his scenes as Caesar Flickerman alone.

I was always Team Miranda and Emily. You don't show up to an interview for assistant to the Editor in Chief of a fashion magazine not knowing who she is, not dressed for the part and having done no research on the magazine or the industry. She had a chip on her shoulder from day one and made it clear that she didn't care about what they did for a living. The speech she got from Miranda about that later was perfection.
@amandafrazier97245 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Some of the things that are taken as Andy being bullied by Miranda/Emily/Runway are really more Andy not taking the steps someone should take to make the best possible impression upon entering a professional field. It gets a little murky because while Miranda and Emily are both harsh and highly demanding, the areas where Andy is lacking are very much on her and not them. There's a difference between saying "okay, this is my first job in this field and it's not ideal and I don't plan to stay here" and showing up blatantly dismissive of the place you're applying. It's the same deal later on when her chore of a boyfriend is whining about the hours she's working. That's not unique to her job; that's the nature of the field she's going into.
@hutch11975 жыл бұрын
@@amandafrazier9724 Exactly. Even worse in this situation, she was informed from day one that working for Miranda would be a stepping stone to any job she wanted, so it was even more important for her to go in with the intention of impressing and doing her best. And THANK YOU for pointing out what a tool her boyfriend was, not to mention her other friends. In the same dinner scene where they were gushing over all the expensive stuff she got for them for free, they grabbed her phone from her when her boss called and almost got her in trouble. She should have ditched them all. And she never owed her boyfriend an apology at the end. If my girlfriend was working long hours in the short-term to accomplish her long-term goal, I would be 100% supportive. And I would be proud of her.
@Me-wk3ix4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. She's supposed to be in her early 20s. At that age, I darn well knew to show up to an interview with some knowledge of what I was applying for. More so if I was trying to be an assistant to a magazine mogul.
@exquisitesplendor71753 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with you. This scene may have been a for-telling of what is happening now. I am a GenXer looking for work, and the way people dress for interviews these days is shocking. They wear sneakers, sweat pants, hoodies, etc, all things that were unacceptable attire back in the day. I try to do my homework whenever possible. It's not always easy with Craigslist since companies posting jobs often don't state the company name, but with Indeed, there's always a name. And since when are bosses supposed to be your friend/confidant/life coach? You're there to do a job, and do it well, or go home. Like Capt. Conrad Howard said in the movie Bad Boys, "You don't like your job? Quit!"
@12inter883 жыл бұрын
I know I’m late. But I show this scene and the interview scene to show what NOT to do in an interview. I teach English but I also go over life skills. Yes, Emily and Miranda are cold. But you do not go into an interview expecting to get the job just because you “are a hard worker”. Nonverbal communication are also implicit: dress, attitude, posture, prior knowledge, research, vocal tone. Andy failed at ALL of these.

This is the most amazing three minutes of the entire movie. Everything about it is a treat. Emily Blunt is wonderfully bitchy and arrogant (in her dress with shoulder wings like a Roman soldier), yet she crumbles and becomes uptight when Miranda shows up. Meryl Streep is the opposite, smooth and gentle in her voice while she cuts people to pieces. Stanley Tucci with his clipboard comment. Emily Blunt saying Anne Hathaway's character is nobody while blocking her from sight, then Anne's face pops barely into view. The staff going from casual mode to high alert. The whole movie is summed up in this one clip.

The store management is all over themselves every time, smiling and deferring. I don’t get it. These people aren’t gods. They do not care about any of us, except as a means to an end that they hope will serve themselves. They greet us minimum wage folks with a palpable brand of cheery bonhomie that I find discomfiting, not disarming. And we’re all supposed to pretend it’s sincere friendliness and that we’re all on some kind of “team”, when the truth is, the goal is, and always has been, to enrich the bank accounts of a few already wealthy people, while exchanging as little as possible with either us workers or the customers, as possible.

It's important to work in a positive and respectful environment where everyone is valued and treated equally. No one should have to feel like they are walking on eggshells or constantly stressed out because of one person's ego. It's not healthy or sustainable in the long run. It's important to stand up for yourself and not tolerate toxic behavior in the workplace. Life is too short to be constantly feeling anxious or unhappy. The original novel this film is based on was much more scathing of "Miranda" (who is a stand-in character for Anna Wintour, and "Runway" is a stand-in fake magazine for "Vogue.") It blatantly states that Miranda was never caught dead doing anything that could remotely be considered work by the average person. However, Meryl Streep and the directors decided to soften on Miranda and gave her several moments of intelligence, quick memory recall, and a keen intuition that both protected her and helped keep the magazine at a very high standard.

You could tell the direction the entire movie is gonna go based on that one quote from Miranda (I will interview her because you interviewed the last two girls & they were a disappointment, whatever the line was). Emily might think she is better than Andy but in the ways that actually count to Miranda, Emily is still not measuring up. Her ego is not justified. Interesting to see how in a way, Miranda takes Andy seriously without knowing her. At least enough to say I will interview her since Emily couldn’t get past her appearance. As elitist as Emily and Miranda could be, I will give Miranda a gold star on that account

This is an amazing break down of the movie! Mad respect! I’m looking at this film through new eyes now.

. It highlights the importance of not judging someone based on superficial qualities and shows that Miranda values substance and potential over outward appearances. It also sets up an interesting dynamic between Emily and Andy, as Emily’s arrogance and entitlement are challenged by Andy’s hard work and determination. It will be interesting to see how their relationship develops throughout the movie and if Emily learns any valuable lessons from her interactions with Andy.

this often happens in real life. high strung gogogo types burn everyone out and they wind up having to hire underqualified candidates because they are the only ones that will even try after a while. this actually can wreck companies. ive seen entire staff turn over in 2 years because of this.

eh... then they all sucked. high performers attract other high performances and even this type of boss will show more value to a high value subordinate.

Nah this sets up the premise that Emily isn't great at her job. Hence she and hired crap people. It's worked on later when Andy surpasses her. Emily was more interested in their appearance than their resume or personal attributes. Clothes can be changed but innovation less so

It's definitely a common issue in the workplace. When employees are constantly pushed to their limits and not given the support they need, they can become burned out and eventually leave. This high turnover can lead to decreased morale, productivity, and overall success of the company. It's important for employers to recognize the signs of burnout and take steps to create a positive and sustainable work environment for their employees.

If you watch realllyyy closely, you can tell Miranda is intrigued about Anne and I think, deep down, has a feeling she can do it.

Wonder if the fashion industry is still the same after 17-18 years. I’m guessing it’s way more niche oriented and fashion mags even online don’t matter much these days. I know several very stylish women and none of them pay the slightest attention to Vogue even existing.
