Real. I'm still doing nothing lol. I want to make a story game but every time I get really into writing lore, plot, characters, etc, I end up realising the next day that I was subconsciously copying my inspirations a little too closely, it's hard to believe it's a coincidence when it happens so often, I especially keep making this mistake with Undertale. I think subconsciously I just want to make Undertale but consciously I want to make a game personal to me and express myself but what ends up happening is they merge and it's just weird and you can't tell what it wants to be. So I keep having to rewrite everything but when I finally think I nailed it, I discover another thing I copied from Toby Fox. Don't get me wrong, I think taking heavy inspiration is fine when other people do it, I'm not entirely sure why I feel bad about doing it even when it is accidental. Just makes me feel ill and then I end up making no progress on my story for a few days to a week.

Well, I think you're making progress on two counts from what I'm seeing: 1) You're failing. Failure is good, you're finding out what not to do and identifying this trap you keep falling into. 2) You're iterating. I think accidental plagiarism and stuff can happen, but it's good you're identifying it. I've got this story in my head I've been iterating on imagation-wise for... years. For as long as I can remember. There are elements from Avatar, Ben 10, some CN show called Tower Prep, Daredevil... and I've iterated on it so much that I genuinely think that you might be able to tell similar sources or sources of inspiration, but not copying. I think for a while it definitely may have been copied in a way, but as you iterate and mash these things together, you end up trimming out what doesn't work and keeping what does. The phrase "steal like an artist" comes to mind. When drawing, I am trying to get better working on references and my intention is that, over time, my own style will evolve from that. I believe that as you write and work on this lore, plot, characters, etc. you will find seeds of your own story blossoming out. Keep merging. Keep taking inspiration (mix up the sources if you can!). Keep going. You'll look back at one point and not even realize you've got something golden. I've found my best ideas and moments of progress happen like that.
