This happens most for me in the pantry. It’s easy to buy food with little thought and forget about it. Then buy it again because you didn’t know you already did last time. To avoid this, I try to do “shelf cooking” every 4 weeks. So I meal plan with only what we have and shop for very little, like only fresh items. It saves money and food waste.

Monogrammed camouflage blanket that was my sons….(he’s 17 now, prolly got it when he was 5 and used it a couple years, then the polyester fleece got ‘hard’ and we demoted it to a bag in the garage) ….I BARELY remember him ever owning it, much less knowing that we still have that thing!!! Thanks-love this idea!!

Exactly. If you didn't know you had it, you wouldn't know that it was gone. The other question I ask is, "What would I do if I didn't have this?" That has allowed me to let go of a lot of things.

I always hear in Forrest Gump’s way of saying “Greenbow, AlaBAMA!” “Laughing, MalaBAMA!” I think her name is Malerie (sp?), from Alabama, and they call her Malabama. As a native TN, it’s like a little slice of home to hear her laugh. I’m glad you enjoy it too!

...what a woman (I wouldn't say "girl" because it reminds me of "Fräulein" and "Mädchen" I did not liked to be addressed like that when I was a young woman). what a laugh, so full of joy and life, so freeing that I had to laugh with her right away.

I recently found a old notebook from my father dated 1941 -during the second world war in France-, I did not know I had that notebook in the attic. I will surely not let go since it is part of family history. So the "did not know" rule does not always work for me.

I recently moved abroad and when people see my belongings almost all of them said "Why didn't you bring so little here". So I told them that I don't have anything else. They were shocked. I saw the pity on their eyes:) They thought that it is because I was poor. Well I am broke but can afford more than that. At this point IDK if I can find anything else that I own.

I don't agree with this rule.It might work for you, but doesn't work for me. This applies to advice in general. I found a skirt this summer that I didn't know I had. It's been sitting in a box for over 20 years. It's silk, it's fab and I wore it all summer.

I love my skirts. I rotate thru them a so some years I wear some of them a lot but then not as much for a couple of years. A person can only have so many categories of keep -and -treasure stuff in their life. Skirts, books and bikes for me. Art supplies too, I suppose

Yes! "Someone gave it to me!" At age 54(?) or thereabouts, I decided I would get rid of 54 things. I made a list of the things. I also made another list of where I got the things. I noticed that quite a few were in my house because someone gave them to me. Wow, it was interesting! I had this practice for several years, at the next birthday, and the next, but I never made the second list again, as it was not as important anymore. I find the best way for me to get rid of things is to have a box or a bag that I keep adding to over time, then I donate. Good job with this video!

I know I own it but this rule made me think about my stuff (just got rid of 75% of my books - donated to public library). I own a small outdoor gas grill plus large gas tank attached, taking up space on my small patio. I became vegan 13 years ago and rarely use a grill now. I live alone and when you don't eat meat/fish....I could grill veggies and tofu steaks but I do not. I roast inside in my oven. Going to sell it cheap on nextdoor.

Yes but just because I didn’t remember I had something does not mean I don’t want it. I have beautiful glassware and probably other quilts and various things that I haven’t seen in a while or are temporarily out of mind but I do want them. However, I agree in plenty of cases you are correct and I should let it go if I didn’t even realize or remember I owned it.

My husband and I rounded up all our no-longer-loved electronics. An ancient iMac, a highly distressed MacBookPro, a cracked ancient iPad, several cell phones, peripherals... I found a store that sells used and refurbishes electronics. I used the credit from the old stuff to get a used AppleWatch for half price, which is like a good quality haircut for me. Brilliant - because I really missed not having my AppleWatch. The old one died. Yey, a win!

I did not think I owned much but after downsizing a little at a time for the past 10 years, I realized that I indeed own so very much. My best advice to the younger crowd is less is better. My kids have taken what they wanted but finding people to take stuff left over has been tough. Good, working stuff. Too hard to throw away. This would not be an issue if I had not bought so much to begin with. I hope this helps a younger person who is just starting out. November 4, 2022
