James was sitting in a siding, waiting for Gordon to go by with the express. “I hope the passengers on the express notice what a splendid engine I am,” he said to himself. “Maybe-“ Then it happened. A ton of water poured all over James, leaving him spluttering and angry. “Who-!” But there was worse to come. Next a ton of gravel fell on him, scraping his paint from tender to buffer. “HEY!” Then, a familiar voice came from above. “Oh, I’m sorry, James,” purred Diesel. “I didn’t see you there.” James was furious. “Just look what you’ve done to my red paint!” he exclaimed. But Diesel took no notice and sniggered away, just as Gordon and the express raced by. “Hello, little James,” Gordon said. “Had an accident?” James was sure everyone in the express was laughing at him. He began thinking of ways to send Diesel packing. “Useless no-good diesels,” he muttered to himself.
