@@mimid.227 But how you change is a different story. Some people still looks the same/ average when they grow up but other change their body/ facial aesthetic dramatically as they grow into their age. Now that’s pretty interesting cause not every kid is a beautiful child. If you never experienced the feeling of being lonely/ getting no attention/ feeling not pretty enough at a teenager years to suddenly being on the other side of the spectrum … then you will never appreciate these glow up video. It brings hope that things will change.

Braces definitely count as glow up imo, the entire aesthetic of someone's face changes with straight teeth -> 😬 to 😁. Also you'll often get palette extenders or elastics to pull the jaw/mouth to a different position and bite. It might not be as obvious as weight loss or a nose job but it's one of the most game changing things for a person's looks (the first day with no braces is a big reveal like in 2000s teen movies).

As a high school teacher I can confirm that most teens look like shit at 14-15. They are KIDS! There's nothing to be attracted to. There's a massive difference between 14 and 18 years old and even between 18 and 23. The hollywood or IG image of teens is very far from reality (in terms of looks and behavior). If there were true teens in movies nobody would watch those movies. The confidence is not oozing out at these ages.

I had a glow up, I was 14-15 years old so I already had puberty years ago & decided I needed a change. I was sick of being called fat/ugly I couldn’t even look at myself in the mirror or want to be in photos. I started to exercise & change my diet where I lost nearly 70 pounds, started to take skincare seriously, changed my wardrobe, learned how to do my hair/makeup, By the time I turned 16 Peoples views changed on me completely, from always being invisible & insulted people started to call me pretty, beautiful, nice skin, skinny, etc. Pretty/skinny privilege is real. I’m 17 now and couldn’t feel more happier in my body, I have a loving boyfriend and overall my quality of life has improved.

What makes me mad is that everyone is criticizing these girls for having said "grow up" while they hype up the guys for doing the exact same. The guys in Jubilees video just found their styles and hit the gym. There's no evident signs of surgery or significant weight loss. Maybe orthodontics, but one can argue that probably some of the girls used orthodontics as well. You can even see the last girl wearing braces. So what is the big difference then? Janiya said that she goes to the gym and overall seems like a fit person. Just as the guys in the video who are not some bodybuilders themselves. Sahai seems to have lost a considerable amount of weight, not just baby fat. And no-one's taking that into consideration. I think the main problem is that women are expected to find their styles, take care of their appearance (skincare, hair, nails, etc), and generally improve their looks as time passes. While on guys these practices are praised. Also, men are really salty because women "get to wear makeup". Breaking news: beauty standards revolve around makeup. So, though it can represent an advantage, it also comes with a catch. There's a societal expectation to wear makeup. The average women does it all the time. Women in the media and celebrities (who play a big role into shaping the beauty standards) are always seen with make up on. When a celebrity is catched not wearing it she's often criticized and is made feel like an imposter. So even this top-tier attractive women are attacked for not being "as pretty" without makeup (no shit). Meanwhile, for the common person, not wearing makeup in a daily basis can be deemed as being untidy or not taking care of their appearance. So there's a no-win situation here. I think most women are consciously or subconsciously pressured into wearing makeup to fit these unattainable standards. Plus a lot of them just enhance their natural features, so though they will obviously look different without it, the changes aren't drastic.

Learning how to do your makeup well also takes significant effort, as does treating acne and preventing acne scarring. Using the right skincare routine and finding the right medication for treatment is hard and can be demoralising. It takes concerted effort to keep going until your skin gets better (usually months if you have bad acne). The last example given of a black woman and a white man were strange examples imo. Is it because she gave a photo of a younger version of herself? Hence you’d NEED to put “grow up”. But the white man is using an older version of himself as his before (late teens to early 20s maybe), hence “grow up” is removed because apparently he has stopped growing up by that age? Because I don’t understand why when a man loses weight when he’s a teenager, it’s more likely a glow up but if a woman does, it’s a lot more circumstantial? And also, if it really is just about effort…why is learning about makeup not considered effortful? The argument in this video is really shakey, and makes me wonder: why are women expected to be pretty when they’re older, but men aren’t expected to look handsome. So that’s why women have a higher standard when it comes to glow ups, but men just really need to lose weight and let puberty do its thing.
@fluffle6522
@fluffle6522 Жыл бұрын
(wall of text srry) EXACTLY, I totally think makeup can count as a glow up. His argument was soo shaky and honestly just sounded like he wanted to call using makeup a superficial change but according to his argument, which was that a glow up takes effort and not just falling into the course of life/a glow up is when you physically intervene and look significantly different, makeup would count! like he literally says that glow ups have to be things that "wouldn't happen anyway" RIGHT AFTER reading and agreeing with a comment stating that makeup can make women look completely different, 7:38. Like dude.. would makeup have happened anyway? He said it had to be drastic changes. I honestly don't think its very fair to compare women's efforts in changing their appearances to men's because when dudes are young and fat they typically are gonna be fat later on and will have to go to the gym in order to change that but when young women are fat its wayyy more likely for a women to grow into her body (or slim out) and not only that, our bodies are more acceptable in way more shapes then men's so women normally don't feel the need to go to the gym like how a guy does. With that being said, women don't typically go from 300 pounds then to the gym so its unfair to base their glow ups on that only (and fucking surgery like?). That's like if we were to base men's glow ups on makeup, men typically don't feel the need to wear makeup so its unfair to completely dismiss their other efforts and say "all they did was grow up and go to the gym 🙄". To me, the definition of a glow up is when you put in effort to change the course or fate of your appearance and you look better. This is pretty much his argument but he switched it up when it came to women. Women put in so much effort, makeup isnt easy, they do realize you have to learn makeup right? If a girl was doing makeup, after her face matured, and it looked bad and then 10 years later you see her again and it looks better - like a completely different person - then that's a glow up.
@bluesberryblue
@bluesberryblue Жыл бұрын
I agree. It doesn't make sense to completely dismiss the effects of makeup in terms of a glow-up when it can make a massive difference to someone's face, which he himself states. Without any effort, a teenager is not going to suddenly start using makeup. In addition, learning how to apply makeup well takes considerable time and effort. Of course, some individuals do start using makeup and it improves their look but they don't look drastically different, which is the case with some of the women here. But hairstyle, makeup, clothing - all of these things combined can make a person near unrecognizable and it doesn't make sense to dismiss these. Personally, for the photos at the end that were considered "glow-ups", I'm not so sure. The lady put a photo of her as a cute chubby child for the "before", so she definitely grew up but it's harder to judge whether she "glowed-up" without a teenage photo. As for the guy, he definitely looks leaner and more defined afterwards, but he was already fairly attractive in the first photo as a younger adult/very late teen. The only difference was the extra weight, which does apply for a glow-up, but we can see he is already good-looking even with the weight.

@iwashere583
@iwashere583 Жыл бұрын
Putting on makeup is not the same as losing a ton of weight after rigorous change of diet and exercise. We need to remember the definition put for glow up in the video to talk about this, like he said, it's not just looking significantly better, but from physical change like surgery and orthodontics. If you like another way to define it, that's fine but it wouldn't be the same. Plus, makeup will eventually be washed off after so it's literally not permanent change

I love listening to you, just for the fact, that you're so real. I agree, they just grew up, but at the same time I have to say, that loosing baby fat and getting a leaner face can make a significant change in the overall impression and look of a face, even if it doesn't require significant effort (and effort isn't a necessary requirement for a glow up imo). Not everyone gets a leaner face is the point. Some of my classmates from a few years ago either stayed puffy in the face or their face got broader (even with weight loss), so I do consider that aspect a glow up. But yeah mayority of those examples were make up. Don't worry about being too harsh, your deliveries are just honest but not mean and for those who search for genuie advice, it's real help.

Ngl, I'm very confused by your "glow up" definition... You discount working on style, hair, makeup, skincare, eyebrows, (nails and perfume weren't mentioned, but I suppose I can include them here), even braces... By this "glow up = big effort ONLY" definition, what are you left with? Only weight loss, surgery, dental work, maybe gym? (And let's not kid ourselves that pursuing surgery would not be controversial in most social circles, so you're at a risk of having your "true glowup" discounted as well). And a lot of the girls seemed to also have whiter teeth, which you didn't mention, so idk what's the extent of this "dental work" part. In this case, yeah, "grow up" was a big part of their supposed "glow ups", but without implementing *any* soft changes (skincare, style, etc.) they would've looked bad. Imo, all of these were "grow ups + glow ups".
@lauramenendez3212
@lauramenendez3212 Жыл бұрын
Agreed, a glow up is literally just a massive attractiveness shift. And everything we do to our appearance counts because it forms part of how attractively others see us. We never stop growing up, so glow up and grow up are interlinked. Must of the girls in the video were already pretty just young, and when they came out they were still pretty but older with a style change, that's why there wasn't much of a glow up but can there be levels to a glow up? A drastic weight change is the biggest glow up you can have, it can impact face shape and face fullness, which can make you look older, younger or just chiselled. Make up can also change someone's look drastically but so can facial hair and a hair cut, these are all things we manipulate through effort, diet, hair cuts and fashion (all are part of glowing up) But when you already perceived someone as attractive, them getting more attractive won't really seem like a glow up but is it? While if someone was really ugly at age 14 and then became super attractive by age 20, is it a glow up or just growing up? Both because some people grow and grow but never get more attractive in the eyes of others.
@QOVESStudio
@QOVESStudio Жыл бұрын
The idea is that in many of these examples they would have achieved similar results regardless, especially Ellie who looks the most same to her previous self. There is nothing wrong with simply 'growing-up' or not 'glowing-up.' Most people live and die within the same tax bracket as their parents and similarly the same 'beauty-bracket,' but that doesn't mean that people cannot move up. We do not expect brownie points for brushing our teeth and wearing moisturizer, but these are aspects some may count as contributing to a "glowup." With or without the explicit goal of looking better, we would all still brush our teeth and apply some form of skincare (as a loose example). A glowup involves actively working to improve one's looks. This could be as 'simple' as getting out of bed, researching better fashion styles of r/malefashionadvice and buying new clothes or as 'complex' as rhinoplastic surgery to correct a crooked nose. Generally glowups are over a larger period of time with more drastic changes and this is why most people consider a true "glowup" to happen from 20 to 40 as this is when most people fall off their self-care routines and the truly dedicated show themselves. It has nothing to do with hard or soft changes.

I used to say I glowed up but I would compare myself to my teenage self. I don’t think that’s worth comparing to anymore. I was a child then, I didn’t need to worry about my sex appeal or attracting men. Now that I’m older and nearing my 30s, it’s a little bit more fair to compare myself from when I was 22 to when I’ll be 32, not 15 to 25. But as I get older, I think comparing myself to my old self isn’t necessary either. All in all, I don’t think I ever glowed up. I just grew up and got more money to buy makeup, get facials, get my hair professionally done, and buy more clothes. Lol

It was like jumping from one reality to another because I was a legitimately ugly child. Speaking from my experience, at 35% I was being mocked and a girl literally spit on my face for proposing her, then at 25% and more muscular body, two 'better-than-average' looking girls came to me asking for a threesome. It's a big deal honestly because I'm indian & 90% of people here don't even have sex here until they're married & I'm not some 6 ft Henry Cavill either. I'm just 5'8" and dark skinned with an asymetrical face but I still changed my attractiveness from a 3/10 to 8/10 with just body fat percentage. So, face can change.

And the first three days of highschool and from time to time my friends all call me handsome. It was nice tbh, to get recognition for my hard work, however it brought up another problem where i became more obsessive over my looks and started comparing myself to others who were hotter than me. But thankfully i realized my self-worth isn't all abt my appearance. My values, my personality, my accomplishments are also what determines my selfworth. So i started thinking what is the best possible state i can be rn, appearance-wise and just be happy when i'm in it, instd of comparing to others. Which is another way to say Just Be the Best You.

Question: How much of this is exacerbated by the fact that "going under the knife" is somewhat of a necessity for young women (and not young men) to have a proper "glow up" . We typically don't see plastic surgery happening until late twenties / early thirties given the fact that our facies and bodies change up until mid-twenties. I think, anatomically, guys benefit from a "puberty" glow up" than women do. For women, we tend to need to take more "drastic changes" like plastic surgery to see as much progress and doing so before your mid-twenties is kind of unheard of unless you're an influencer or celebrity.

I disagree a bit on the “sacrifice” part. Makes it sound like the only valid “glow up” would be weight loss. If you learn to take better care of your specific hair type for example or how to dress your body type and it makes you look better that counts as a glow up for me too. There was still effort and thought being put in and it didn’t just happen naturally because of puberty.

My only glowups would be my physique, my hair and my skin. I worked out everyday, i grew out my hair and styled it, and i started skin care, that made my skin glow.

Something I have worried about personally is this: if I get cosmetic surgery and I am treated better/get more positive attention, I am afraid it will just make me bitter and resentful of the human condition. I wonder how common this is or isn't.
@flavinsilva8913
@flavinsilva8913 Жыл бұрын
I think it depends on what surgery you will do. Will it affect a lot in your appearance? If so, then maybe you get bitter, but if its not that drastic, I don't think so. I had a surgery to fix my ear (so it changed a lot in my facial aesthetics) and yeah, people started to treat me better but even with that, I still felt ugly, aand ended up being excluded again due to my lack of confidence, beauty is important, but only after those experiences you will able to see those who only cared about your appearance, and those who treated you better because who you are. In short: you will get bitter, but its more like a bittersweet truth, that you can get with or without the surgery. People care a LOT about beauty, but you will find those who value you more from who you are than your looks. So maybe its worth it. You choose

It's funny, my "grow-up" period lasted into my late 20's when I stopped getting taller. I know this because I had a physical then and my height measured in around 6'-3"; my prior physical was when I was 19 and I was 5'-11". So grew another 4 inches in 8 years. My face also changed a lot during this period. I was never a mouth breather as a child because it gave me dry mouth and it was incredibly uncomfortable. As I was going through my 20's, I ended up on ADHD meds which had the side effect of giving me dry mouth even though I always breathed through my nose. So I chewed gum religiously everyday for years. I had no idea the effects these things had on my face, primarily because I was obese at the time. When I dropped 200-lbs over the course of a few years, I'd run into people I hadn't connected with for some time and they mentioned how I didn't even look like the same person. Probably the face. In retrospect watching this content, it explains a lot.

@@pneumocystosis7115 Likely just genetics. Certainly wasn't my diet and excercise protocols of Taco Bell and sitting in a computer chair at that time, lol. I think I had a long drawn out puberty phase. I was fairly baby faced in my early 20's. I didn't even start shaving until around then. I started to look older than my late teen self when I was around 30. A lot of development was slow and late onset, and it likely resulted in my height development hanging on in pace with everything else... but I'm speaking out my ass at this point.

Meh, grow up happens to everyone as people get old they lose their child look and grow into an adult, so with the adults eyes, the person look much nicer. A glow up can happen later in life too and it basically means that one's look has improved greatly. And sometimes these two things (growing up, and starting to look more attractive) happen at the same time maybe in their late teens which we have seen in the boys' 'glow up' video but in the girls' video the change was not drastic and I think that is why their change was 'downgraded' to a grow up. I think that is a misleading concept.

A whole face feature of me changed and me and my family think that's wild. That's why I never believed that Hollywood stars had a nose job at 13 but i really believed an actual face feature changed bc this happened to me. Nose shape changing is one of the most common features of puberty. And yes, it usually goes in that direction. The reason why the other person accused you of eurocentrism is that frankly, sharper noses with higher and more defined ridges tend to be more valued due to the history of eurocentrism and racialism that defined the development of the modern world (at the cost of the many POC groups who were less likely to have those nose shapes).

It's sad how these girls are being so heavily criticised just because people are not able to see their glow up. Like what even is that ? They found their style and overall improved their appearance and self if that's not a glow up then i don't know what is. These are some double standards cuz when the male version of the video came out NO ONE said anything, but it's not like those guys had major changes either. Overall I am never a big fun of comments about someone else's appearance because I strongly believe our beauty standards follow what our market needs at the moment so i don't really think they should be taken seriously. Also I believe that before speaking and invalidating someone's experience you should think twice, if it's really your opinion or just what our society wants you to say. Women always seem to have to reach some type of impossible standards and i'm genuinely tired of hearing this. No critique to this video in particular, just something I have been noticing.

Not to mention, I was an introvert with low self esteem back then. Now that I’m nearly 41, I’d say my overall figure is slender. However, it doesn’t come naturally. I watch what and how much I eat, exercise almost daily, drink green tea, minimize stress and get plenty of sleep. Though I’m still an introvert, I have more confidence now than when I was in my teens and 20s.
