I'm originally from Coronado, California, and also a Navy brat. Dad was a submariner for 26 years. We moved 14 times by the time I graduated from high school, but Coronado was my home town, born in San Diego, Mom grew up there, etc.. While I was going to a local junior college, I ended up befriending several SEALs, (they were dating my cousin and her best friend). Several of these guys became good friends of mine. All, great, great guys. Partied like no tomorrow and only knew one speed; fast! Well, one of these guys confided to me one day that he'd interviewed for a new 'job', on the east coast and it looked like he was accepted. That's all he said about it, other than it was classified. This was in the 1981 time frame. Fast forward to the following Christmas, and I'm at a party and someone I knew asked me if I'd noticed this friend of mine was back in town for the holidays, I thought. When I found him, he looked like a cave man. Long, long hair and beard and much quieter than i'd remembered. We talked for awhile and then said our goodbyes. He was a plank owner of SEAL Team 6, Gold Squadron. Fast forward seven years and now I am an Air Force pilot, flying AC130 Spectre gunships in the 16th SOS, AFSOC. We're down in Panama doing Operation Just Cause, December, 1989. I'm standing in line to get a cheese burger at the Howard AFB bowling alley, after flying over 16 hours for the initial assault the night before. In other words, we're physically wasted, dog tired and starving. I hear this familiar voice, 'Jeff, is that you?' I turn around and here is my friend, whose obviously been out doing their mission as well. It was weird and surreal, seeing my SEAL friend from Coronado and now here we are, in Panama, years later. He's gone now, but I think of him often. He was a great SEAL and a great friend. He retired a Senior Chief.

Before anyone passes judgement they should probably listen to the whole podcast for more context and better understanding. The first 10 minutes I was skeptical of it but by the end it all tied together and seamed to be fairly and well done.

As a native I appreciate the preservation of our warrior culture in Red.

I believe the military to some degree in its deep Organization understands the human psychology when it comes to a environment of stress and brutality of death and it’s inherited recklessness. I think that’s why the have sops (the rules) it’s the only thin string that tugs our side from being the enemy ,on the books that’s what makes our military different from the enemy,without them on a scared battlefield were identical.

I dont remember what book it was but it described as special forces and tier 1 operators as borderline psychopaths. On a nightly basis (often times several times a night) You could be shooting people from just feet away. The constant adrenaline rush had to be insane as you're expected to go home to you're family to be as normal as you can. That kind of life has to change you over time.

Here's a breakdown of UKSF (United Kingdom Special Forces; 22 SAS/SBS) selection. PHASE ONE 1. Aptitude; Navigation & Endurance (commonly referred to as Hills Phase) 4 weeks of *DAILY* mountain marches navigating by map from point to point against an *unspecified* time limit. Typical schedule as follows (remember, these marches are EVERY DAY)... Week 1 15-20 km 40lbs weight+weapon, water etc. Week 2 18-24 km 45lbs weight+weapon, water etc. Week 3 20-32 km 50lbs weight+weapon, water etc. Week 4, Test Week; consists of 5 marches over 7 days march 1, 2 & 3; 30 km 60lbs weight+weapon, water etc. march 4; 35 km 60lbs weight+weapon, water etc. THEN, 4 hours rest and start the final march; Long Drag; *65* km 70lbs weight+weapon, water etc. 20-24 hour time limit (weather dependent). --------------- PHASE TWO 2. Jungle warfare, tactics, navigation ALL LIVE FIRE TRAINING. 6 weeks. Those who have passed phase one have to then pass jungle training. Training takes place in Belize or Brunei, deep in jungles. Candidates learn the basics of surviving and patrolling in the harsh conditions. UKSF jungle patrols have to live for weeks behind enemy lines, in 4 man patrols, living on rations. This includes yet more days of marches point to point. Jungle training weeds out those who can't handle the discipline required to keep themselves and their kit in good condition whilst on long range patrols in difficult conditions. Again, there is a mental component being tested, not just a physical. Special Forces teams need men who can work under relentless pressure, in horrendous environments for weeks on end, without a lifeline back to home base. ---------------- PHASE THREE Continuation; Escape & Evasion & Tactical Questioning/Resistance to Interrogation The small number of candidates who have made it through endurance and jungle training now enter the final phase of selection. The likelihood of a special operation going wrong behind enemy lines is quite high, given the risks involved. UKSF want soldiers who have the wherewithal and spirit required to escape and evade capture and resist interrogation. For the escape and evasion (E&E) portion of the course, the candidates are given brief instructions on appropriate techniques. This may include talks from former POWs or special forces soldiers who have been in E&E situations in the real world. Next, the candidates are let loose in the countryside, wearing World War 2 vintage coats with instructions to make their way to a series of waypoints without being captured by the hunter force of other soldiers. This portion lasts for 3-5 days after which, captured or not, all candidates report for TQ. Tactical Questioning (TQ) tests the prospective UKSF men's ability to resist interrogation. They are treated roughly by their interrogators, often made to stand in 'stress positions' for hours at a time, while disorientating white noise is blasted at them. When their turn for questioning comes, they must only answer with the so-called 'big 4' (name, rank, serial number and date of birth). All other questions must be answered with 'I'm sorry but I cannot answer that question.' Failure to do so results in failing the course. The questioners will use all sorts of tricks to try and get a reaction from the candidates. They may act friendly and try to get their subjects chatting; or they stand inches away from their subjects and scream unfavourable remarks about the sexual habits of their mothers. Female interrogators may laugh at the size of their subject's manhood. Of course, a real interrogation would be a lot more harsh and the subject would not know that they get to leave alive when it's all over. That said, days of interrogations and enduring the stress positions and white noise break down a man's sense of time and reality. UKSF are looking for men who can withstand such treatment long enough so that the effects of revealing any operational information they might have can be lessoned by HQ. ------------------------------------------------------------ This is 6 months in, successful candidates for the SAS are now badged and report to Hereford, the home of 22 SAS. The SBS candidates still have a further selection/continuation phase to complete before being badged and report Royal Marines Poole, the home of the SBS. Completion of this 6 month selection course is NOT the end. They then start SF training (which never ends) and for the 1st year in particular are on probation; they can be sent back to their original unit at any time.

I think in combat we have people who compartmentalize the things they do to make it...make sense. I was regular Artillery batallion but as a forward observer, served with my infantry platoon/company/batallion. We had guys who would do things to bad guys we captured and to the bodies of dead bad guys but there was a limit. A few were sent back to Kandahar or Bagram for evaluation but all were RTD. Our CSM would talk to us about being professional and not taking things personal but it was difficult to tell if he was being authentic or doing what he was told was the right thing. We lost three guys on an ambush. The commander wanted to talk to us before we went out for ops the next day about 2 hrs after the memorial service. The commander, again, talked about being professional, not killing for revenge or to send a message. He assured us there would be consequences if he received reports of any of these things happening. After he walked off the CSM walked in front of the formation and said with a devilish grin, "you heard what the commander said, because you were standing here when he said it". He walks off and we took it that we had received the message from higher (brigade commander) but we had also been given the green light to do what we had to do to make the enemy feel the pain of the loss of our 3 brothers!

I'm not going to pretend to know that kind of horrors these guys have to deal with in combat. But I'm surprised how short sighted some of the commenters are in this comment section. Instead of some of you condoning the behavior of unethical and inhuman behavior, why don't you celebrate those "Warriors" who were there experiencing the same hell and NOT giving in to their darker sides, which resides in all of us. Those are the one's who you should be praising. Warriors have to commit some terrible acts in the name of freedom and retribution but they still have a code by which they live by. Otherwise we are no better than the monsters we presume to be fighting.

So bassically, if I want to go to DEVGRU, and more specifically red squadron, I gotta be a sociopath.

We ask these guys to do and see unimaginable things in war and now we’re trying to expose a few that took the pressure harder than others. I’ve never been for torture, but war is hell and will make some people make unbelievable mistakes. Our warfighters make sure that the bad guys think twice before hurting innocent civilians. It’s not always a smooth ride 🇺🇸

The CIA were probably salivating at the prospect of recruiting somebody with his skill set and training to do their dirty work. Theres a very fine line that has to be walked by these guys when it comes to the brutality of being an effective elite warrior, on one hand the greater the violence of action, aggression, and brutality of your force lends itself to being a more effective force. You HAVE to become a beast of a man to do the job to a certain extent, after all they were often doing one if not multiple direct action missions every single night on a deployment during the GWoT where they knew theyd be going out and snatching souls. There also is a certain aspect of psychological warfare that doing something like "skinning" an enemy combatant entails, is it gruesome and brutal? Sure, I mean I certainly wouldnt be volunteering to do that but you can argue that there is some merit to striking additional fear into a terrorists hearts by doing so. Im not condoning it or saying actions such as those should be glorified, just that there is in fact some value in it from a psychological warfare perspective. In fact things like that have been practiced by many great fighting forces dating back all the way to the Spartans or the Vikings, in which brutal acts of violence against the enemy were actually glorified and accepted because they valued making their enemies fear them that much and wanted to assert their dominance and violence of action. So its not like its something that is unique to our modern day elite warfighters, I think its part of the human condition and how warfare can effect that condition. That being said, it brings up the question of: Do these types of elite special warfare units attract sociopath's or psychopath's? And the answer is absolutely, its a little talked about but well known secret within those communities that the job attracts some of the greatest guys, but also some of the worst. What is required of the job, simply lends itself to attracting someone with that type of mental state, and theyre usually extremely effective warriors due in part to that psychology. You must make a beast out of a man to be an elite fighting force and do the job effectively, but what if the man is already a beast, and you just have to train them? Thats a conundrum for the military, since there absolutely is value in recruiting those types of people to fight.

the whole purpose of the SEAL teams especially DEVGRU is to create the best killers there are, and they're absolutely the best killers. I don't like when people act surprised that these SEALs found enjoyment in killing, its what they were trained to do. They were focused on the mission and it just so happens that dropping bodies was part of that mission whether you find that morally wrong or not it was their job and they were damn good at it.

One of Richard Marcinko's book he mentions a guy named in Vietnam Manny Tanto prob fake name but he would skin enemy troops alive and then you had the Apache sniper that Carlos Hathcock killled she would skin our soldiers and remove their eyelids

I think much like first responders in the Medical, Fire, and Law Enforcement communities...much, MUCH more should be done to monitor and treat mental health issues. In my opinion, mandatory psychiatric checks and psychologists and Doctors should be assigned to screen and watch over many of these professionals. I just don't think it's realistic to assume that people can see....over and over again...violence and death and extreme stressful situations and come out of it unaffected. I'm sure the military and law enforcement are trying but it seems to be something that HAS to be accounted for with resources. God bless everyone.

I’m an old Force Recon Marine and I remember not too long ago none of this shit was any nasty Civilians business and opsec was everything. We were “Silent Professionals”.. We trained with, did our workups With and deployed with SEALs everywhere we went we did combined Ops with them too. Great guys. I went to paramedic school with a former SEAL who trained with Marcus Luttrell and I quote, "I wouldn't piss on Marcus if he were on fire". And yes, he was legit because another guy and myself who were both veterans (I was Infantry, other guy was an AF firefighter) were skeptical but he brought his "I love me" book in and unless this guy spent hundreds or thousands of dollars having all those certificates made up and then somehow knew the lingo (military guys just know) then I believe every word that man said.

It seems that Jack Murphy has been salivating to talk about SEALs since his days back at SOFREP with him even making a comment saying something like “I’ve never met a seal who didn’t have problems with X, if any seals want to come on the show and prove me wrong I’ll be glad to talk to you.” Idk I think maybe a seal pissed him off at some point and he’s gone on the warpath since then. But ALL military units (especially SOF units) have issues with heightened aggression, not just the seals. They are just the sexiest name but Jack acts like they are the only ones to do it.

you know, i wanted to be a seal when i was 8 years old. I read Richard Marcinko's books and wanted desperately to be on ST6. I joined the Navy when I turned 18 in 2002 and took the pre-buds test in boot when we went to do our navy swim quals and passed with flying colors. Unfortunately what I didn't know prior to joining was that my recruiter had lied to me and i was 4 points short on the asvab portion etc. and i tried to get a waiver later but because I eventually went on to corps school and fmss / fmf it was denied. Years later here I am and I am actually really glad I never went on to be a SEAL or join ST6 if i had gotten that lucky. It sounds like many of those guys are psychopaths.

These warriors are trained for years to do one job. Let them do their job the best they can, hands untied. I think its best the public not know what these bad asses do every day to rid the world of scum. Most will never understand the why.

I feel like sometimes some of these folks who choose to talk about and analyze the actions of these elite operators on their actions are doing so as if it's all black and white and no grey areas. I personally don't think that's a fair way to do so. Obviously war is brutal, and once a situation has gotten so bad that men are actively killing each other to decide the outcome, it's a completely different world they are living in. Now of course like in anything, there needs to be common sense rules and laws that need followed. And even though someone is a soldier at war they should still conduct themselves with professionalism. But at the end of the day there's going to be grey areas especially in war and especially at a top tier operations level. I also believe that a person in that situation who's constantly surrounded by the horrors of war will almost instinctively start to become numb in their emotions and may start to seem like they are " fine" with being involved with such violence. But I think that's how their minds help them cope with it. I'm not saying there has never been an unprofessional operator to do stupid things. I just think that unless you have been in their shoes and seen and done what they have done and are doing it for a noble cause I'll add, I just don't think it's right or fair to cast any serious judgment.
