Maya Papaya schools are too concerned with teaching kids the importance of diversity and how horrible it is to misgender someone and how biology is thrown out the window when it comes to biological sex of a person and LGBT history and etc etc. it’s total bullshit. Schools need to teach students, like you said, sex education and social media safety and how to file your taxes and how to build a resume and how to apply for colleges and loans and how to open a bank account. trafficandtransit I believe that’s true, however if the phone was still on, her mother or a friend or whoever could have called it and I think they should have been able to ping it that way as it has to communicate with a cell tower to receive and incoming call. Also, as someone else mentioned, the apps she was using, especially like Snapchat and instagram and all those, have location services communicating near constantly. I wish they could determine whether or not she was using a second device as well because that could definitely give a lead to who she was speaking to that day.

You must not know much about police... With teens they usually assume at the beginning that they are just at a friend's house or that they ran off in the heat of the moment and will come back pretty quickly. They pretty much never ping people's phones in that short a time unless they have a good reason to believe that there was foul play or that they are in imminent danger. They didn't have any reason to believe either of those things in the time before her phone went off.

The part where she took her phone apart and put it back together, she was probably swapping the SIM card and had a totally different phone number. I used to work in the phone industry and a lot of people would hide the additional sim where the battery is located or in the phone case. This also makes sense to me as to why they said her phone was completely shut off, it was probably when the other sim was inserted. If this is the case it would be possible for the phone service provider to find the phone number to the extra sim by searching the imei. Also the more I think about it the $55 cash she took out sure sounds like an initial payment for a prepaid phone carrier.

I saw a comment saying her taking apart her phone could have been her switching out a SIM card and it reminded me of something. I’m in the UK so this could be entirely wrong but you can buy SIM cards here that you add credit to as you go instead of having a phone plan, not linked to a bank account. You could buy credit in most stores and you could do it with cash, essentially untraceable. It could be possible she had one of those SIMs she could have swapped it out and communication via that SIM would not show up on a statement or bill. The cash she had could have been used to buy credit. Like I said this is based on UK cell phones so it could be totally implausible in Canada.

It’s a long story but private detective did finally find her after 6 years living a perfectly happy life across the country. She wanted to leave and she wanted to disappear and she did. She never even once slipped up (until very recently) or even tried to make contact with any of us. She also took pretty much nothing with her. Including leaving her phone and laptop and a lot of other stuff at home. She didn’t need it. So I know for a fact it’s doable. And I feel this young girl here did the same thing.

Do you think it's possible that she met someone, most likely online, who claimed to be down on their luck or homeless? Maybe they told her they were in a bind and needed help or a place to stay. Her friend stated that during their phone call, Mikayla was crying about needing help and feeling badly for someone. She also seems to have a very kind-hearted nature. Maybe she thought she'd get this person set up for a night or two and then head back to the school to be picked up. It's possible this person formed a rapport with her previously, whether that be on an app or possibly in person. She clearly didn't appear as though she was leaving for any lengthy period of time. If she was going to meet up with a love interest, you'd think she'd bring her makeup or something like that. Her friends and family didn't claim that she was dressed or dolled up any more than she was on a normal day. All people are different, but I'd speculate a teenage girl who was meeting up with someone they planned to spend the day with romantically would want to present at their very best; maybe that's ignorant of me, though. I don't think this girl was trying to run away; I think she was trying to help someone who claimed they needed it. I think this said person had nafarious intentions, and as a result, she disappeared. Just my thoughts.

I’m sure she knew changing her name could ping her but she knew she couldn’t be dragged home now that she’s an adult. She’s never made contact. Never reached out. Deactivated all of her social medias and email. Left her phone and laptop when she left because it could be used to find her. She had no intention of returning and she still doesn’t. People leave all the time. And they leave really willingly. She wasn’t troubled. Wasn’t into drugs. Nothing like that. She just wanted to disappear. Wow, I live in Alberta (which is the province next door to Saskatchewan) and I have never heard of this case! In my opinion, it’s pretty clear that she was being groomed by some internet predator and given that she had personal struggles and her self esteem was likely low, she was the perfect target. I don’t think she necessarily “ran away” but I think she probably thought that she was going to have a romantic adventure or maybe a life change but I highly doubt she expected to never see anyone again. My mind automatically goes to those horrific stories where people are kept prisoner for years and years but I think the more likely scenario is she was trafficked or...killed. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was taken out of Saskatchewan altogether because her “groomer” likely made her think they were going elsewhere so that it would be a red herring once people started looking for her. This is horrible. On a lighter note, this couldn’t be more Canadian with the fact she kept hanging out at Tim Hortons and she ordered poutine 🇨🇦.

That odd last visit to the school actually makes little sense to me, she went back there just to tell the first two people she saw she was going to Regina??? I wonder why she would go all the way back just for that... ALSO the time the bus depot man said she arrived may not be off, I'm thinking she did arrive there and spent a short period of time there BEFORE 12, it is basically on the way between the bank/Tim Horton's area, WHAT IF she went straight there at first, found out that a bus won't be coming until 5 pm, got on the phone with the person, who then told Mekayla "I'll just come pick u up myself" what if in this moment, Mekayla finally felt nervous about what she was doing and decided she would at least tell SOMEONE back at school at least where she was going just to be "safe", so realizing she had 2 hours to wait with the driver on the way decided to walk back to school and tell the first people she finds, then return to the bus depot. My theory not only solves some of the lost time between 11 and 12, but also lines up with what the bus depot witness said about Mekayla arriving "between 10 and 12". Further more, it also lines up with your own theory Danelle about someone from Regina picking her up; (she left the bus depot around 1:30, and since two hours is the time it takes to drive this distance this means that around 11:30 was when the person who picked up Mekayla started on their way) What do you think? One final note; I believe there may not have been a "second phone", remember when she was "taking the phone apart" at times in some of the footage; maybe she removed the phone from it's protective case and put it back in her pocket with the corner sticking out, and the kids at the school mistook this for a "second phone"...

yes!! this theory makes a lot of sense. her going back to the school for less than 5 minutes was confusing me as well. she realized something could go wrong and she knew she had to wait for a little bit anyways so she wanted to make sure at least a couple people knew where she was going to be.

I wish people was well aware of the dangers of kik and talking to people online. It is so dangerous! I am a victim of being stalked by an adult on there and I am so lucky to still be alive. The man lied about his age started talking to me on kik when I was 13 years old. I’m now almost 21. He told me I better do what he told me or he would take me and no one would ever find me. I was terrified my whole childhood until I was 19. I was scared to tell my parents because obviously I was not supposed to be on this app. My parents would go through my phone but I would just delete the app. Parents and children need to be aware of this situation. He made Facebook profiles using my pictures and he always knew where I was and where I was living. I finally told my mom and I’m no longer in contact with him. I’m still scared but it’s still a serious problem in today’s society.

This sounds terrifying. I'm glad you're okay and we're able to cut contact with that pervert. You are right that kids and children have to be more open about these things and parents shouldn't judge / criticise because that's exactly what children are afraid of. But the problem is, so many teens don't have close relationships with their parents. Mekayla had a single parent so I can see how the mom might have been very busy, making it easier for Makayla to have secrets. She was also clearly depressed, her Instagram profile is filled with suicidal posts and posts that suggest very low self esteem. Her captions were always looking for validation... A young girl in such a state of mind would have been easy prey for a trafficker:((

I’m from where this took place, and I didn’t know her or her family personally but I do know a few people that did... and the fact that Mekayla’s mom/aunt keep making it out to seem like they were this happy little family is very far from the truth. Supposedly Mekayla was not a happy kid, her and her mom did not get along very well, she had hardly any friends at all and kept to herself and I’ve heard there is a lot of half truths & straight up lies that have been told about her home life & the situation with her father. 😕

This came to my mind as well. So many family and friends will lie about relationships after a tragedy out of guilt or embarrassment or just bc they want to be more involved. Often in these stories the parent will claim to be best friends with their moody, hormonal, teenage kid like... come on. Doubt it. Just from the texts she sent you could tell she had a chip on her shoulder and her mom refusing to speak about important details and smiling in the media pictures? Uhh. Also, often in religious households with teenagers there is a lot of overbearing sometimes borderline or full on abuse and they want to get as far from their psycho family as possible. Just a thought. You can't just take her mothers words as gospel. She didn't even realize she had a full backpack of clothes and makeup and a second phone so, obviously she wasn't as close with her as she let on.

Pretty obvious she did not have a happy family life. Fatherless, mother withheld her father's identity which is just fucking weird - even if he was abusive she could have told the children the truth about that - and the girl was harming herself. Kids from happy secure families don't fall prey to older predatory men. Fatherless, insecure teens who feel lost and alone look outside the failing home for support and find it in the worst places.

This case honestly reminds me so much of myself at her age. I was struggling with mental illness, specifically undiagnosed bipolar disorder. I used to self harm & the whole leaving tim hortons and then circling round to the other door and showing up from behind a store reminds me of when I struggled with that. When I was desperate to hurt myself I definitely had done it behind a store if I felt like there werent anymore private places around (sometimes even bathrooms felt too public). I would talk to tons of people online, form relationships with them, was willing to meet up with them. I talked to older men who I realize now definitely took advantage of me & the fact that I was vulnerable not only because of my age but because of the state of my mental health. When I went through what I now realize was mania I would run away and if I had the means I would have skipped town but I did not. My closest friends irl didnt know everything that was going on but my closest ONLINE friends did. Nobody in my real life knew about these people for the most part though. When the mania stopped if I had done something extreme - like taking off and leaving town - I would be just overwhelmed with guilt & facing the aftermath was extremely hard. It often led to suicide attempts. The scattered way she handled everything, the urgency she seemed to feel to do it all, it all reminds me so much of when I was her age and experiencing mania. My family & friends didnt notice that anything was wrong with me when this all happened until I slipped back into depression and tried to hurt myself. My mania was dismissed as simply being a teen and acting a bit weird. The depression was always described as coming out of nowhere, nobody having seen any signs, blah blah blah. Idk maybe I'm reaching but god I relate so hard to all of this lmao.

i’m pregnant with my first and this makes me never want to let my child have access to social media. it seems to me like she was planning to meet up with someone. her taking the money out and then trying to get the hotel. it sounds like she was planning to get a room to meet with this person but she couldn’t because no one would get one for her under their name and she was too young to get one for herself. so it seems like she was trying to get a bus ticket to meet with whoever she was contacting. i think she voluntarily went with this person but now she’s being held against her will or met with foul play. this person could have been grooming her. people like that prey on someone’s insecurities and vulnerabilities. if she was struggling with bullying and her acne, this is something predators look for. especially if she did have a second phone. this is something predators do. it could be a way of keeping in contact without being tracked.

As a young gay boy in the beginning of the 2000's, I used to talk to men online. At 15, I was actually supposed to meet up with up one guy and they were going to take me to a hotel.
