Episode Notes:
1. Most of the footage in this episode is from previous videos.
2. Herzog Zwei will be Sega Ages final release when it hits.
3. After Burner Climax was Sega Forever's last release, over a year ago.
4. To date, no announcement has been made that any of these are coming to PS4 or Xbox One.
5. Panzer Dragoon Remake has a PC version coming, but no confirmed release for Xbox One or PS4.
6. Even if Sega doesn't want to broach the higher end polygon games of Model 3, there is a treasure trove of stuff on the System 16, System 18, System 32, and Model 1 and 2 that could come over. I mean Virtua Racing shows M2 has a strong handle on emulating that hardware already, and the Model 2 itself is based on that same tech.

First, I’d like to say I didn’t mean to alienate younger gamers who enjoy retro games. When speaking in general terms, you rarely cover every type of gamer. I’d also like to clear up the Switch, PS4, Xbox One statement. Some believe I was saying the Switch is for kids only. That wasn’t the case. I was saying that with a combined market of 150 million, there’s a bunch of older Sega fans who would love access to these games.

The people that thought that the point was "The Switch is for kids" completely misunderstood what the argument in that point is. However, I believe the largest market, by far, is actually PC. Almost everyone nowadays has a PC and considering how versatile computers are, SEGA porting/remaking some of their games would probably reach a wider audience that way. We can look at their "Mega Drive/Genesis Collection" or "Shenmue" on Steam. If they were to do that with other games - the soon-to-be Panzer Dragoon remake and others that aren't... well... Sonic - that would be, perhaps, much more of an audience reacher.

@DejaVoodooDoll Ironically, yeah that seems to be the case. Sega does love to milk the Genesis content. When M2 started releasing Sega Ages stuff on the Switch I was hopeful we'd see mostly arcade games, along with the occasional Genesis/Master System game that kinda needed the quality of life updates (Phantasy Star was a great ages release). Why they gave us ANOTHER Sonic 1 & 2 release I'll never understand. Even Sonic 3 & Knuckles would have been a great addition, because other than on a Genesis or through emulation there's no way to play it (Sonic 3 was on the PS3/Xbox 360 Genesis collection, but not Sonic & Knuckles). But why give us the two sonic games that are already available in the Genesis collection? =/ It's kind of a missed opportunity. And now it seems the Sega Ages line is all but dead. It looks like there's just one more game coming out: Herzog Zwei. Another Genesis game, but at least one they haven't done a million times before. At least we got Outrun, Thunder Force I, Shinobi, and Virtua Racing. Would've been nice to have had Thunder Blade, Turbo Outrun, Outrunners, After Burner, Super Hang On, Revenge of Death Adder, Galaxy Force, Shadow Dancer and some later arcade games on the Switch, though. A couple of those made it to the 3DS, but I'd just love to be able to play them on a big screen. Sega released so many great arcade games that I would buy instantly if they released them on modern systems. I wouldn't even mind if they charged more for later, more advanced arcade games like House of the Dead, Daytona USA, Sega Rally. Really, the list is endless. But like you said, sadly it's really only the 16-bit stuff they seem interested in. I love Sega, they might be my favorite developers/publishers of all time, but being a Sega fan does mean you get to be frustrated a lot. :P I really hope we get to see some of these games on modern systems soon. I'd love to have an arcade machine, but I spend most of my time in bed due to my health (cancer), so it wouldn't really be practical.

It was superb, really sad that it was left behind. Now I'm excited about this fog gaming. Hopefully will get opportunity to access Sega great games somehow. I'm willing to pay for that.
@JohnDoe-wq5eu

@@Mike-gu6up The problem with the whole "fog gaming" thing is it seems to rely almost entirely on exceedingly fast internet speeds which simply are out of most people's reach here in the US and elsewhere in the world. I see it as something that has potential although it's something that's almost definitely going to stay predominantly in Japan if not entirely in Japan. The whole announcement of it felt like a slap in the face because it's something that will only really affect business in it's home country and nowhere else. And meanwhile games like the stuff M2 does will be pushed to the side and probably never revisited because they didn't give new exciting games any chance.

Back in 2011, when I released my Sega Model 3 emulator, I was contacted by someone at Sega of Europe looking to discuss porting Model 3 games to Xbox 360. They sent me an NDA in order to grant access to Model 3 documentation and source code, which I quickly signed, and then never spoke to me again. I suspect they came to the conclusion that the idea didn't make business sense and it's hard to fault them. Model 3 was a milestone for its time but the games largely lacked depth. Many can be beaten in ~20 minutes and would offer little replay value today. Spikeout, I think, is a notable exception. The beloved Model 3 racers suffer from licensing issues (e.g., the Daytona speedway name and the cars in both Scud Race and Sega Rally 2). Some Model 3 games have seen ports or follow-ups. Spikeout had an Xbox incarnation, LA Machineguns was released for Wii, and Virtual On Oratorio Tangram has appeared on both Xbox 360 and PS4. Sega today exists in name only: it's little more than an IP holding company. As such, they're going to be inclined to pursue the lowest hanging fruits.

Coming to terms with the fact that Sega only cares about the "easy" re-releases is something we all Sega fans have to do. Selling MD titles is easy, a 1$ Chinese SoC can emulate them with good levels of accuracy with open source emulators. Re-releasing Saturn, System 32 Model boards, both Naomis, is not, they require more effort as we saw with Virtua Racing and how M2 approached it. It was the exception to the rule. The good thing of this is that if they don't care, Sega fans do. We'll build our own SFF PCs, connect them to the medium of our choice (be it a CRT TV, you premium Samsung Oled, whichever you prefer) and play with the emulators the community has developed. We're a dedicated bunch. Only piracy and emulation have saved Sega's, Namco's, Taito's and many others legacy. Don't ever forget that. They're/were corporations, they care about profit, not legacy.

Totally. For me, Sega have made some awesome games but they shot themselves in the foot back the 90s by releasing too much pricey Mega Drive/Genesis hardware too close together. I'm trying to piece together a collection of Sega's best (in my opinion!) games and it's annoys the living shit out of me that it's spread over a million different platforms- I've only just (yesterday in fact) got Virtua Racing working and playable on MAME and it's one of my favourite games of all time. If they (Sega) got their act together and released all the Model 1, 2 & 3 and more recent (After Burner Climax) stuff on current consoles and/or PC they'd make a fortune. I've stuck with my (RGH) Xbox360 mainly because I'm too cheap to buy a newer console but Id happily fork out for a newer one if I could buy games I actually want to play for it 😎

Bang on with that post! Sega is both unmotivated and ignorant regarding their past. When piracy is the only option for a large swath of your back catalog, that's when you know they've goofed. The thing with Sega, along side a lot of the big Japanese game companies like Capcom, Square Enix, and Konami, is that over the last 10 years or so they've made baffling decision after baffling decision that don't seem to really make any sense for companies that care about keeping fans or want to stay in business. They have to be dragged kicking and screaming into making the right decision far too often sadly. I think the thing we as fans need to recognize is that a lot of the people who made the games we love and ran the companies we loved in the 90s just aren't there anymore. Alot of them have retired or died in the last 20 years, so the companies and franchises are now run by entirely different people now with different interests than our own. It's like that old paradox about replacing the head and the handle of the hammer, just because it says "Sega" on it doesn't mean it is the Sega you remember. If you want games that look and feel like the ones you love, keep an eye on indie projects which are trying to make games in the style of games you love, and give money to them instead of the companies who aren't making the kind of games you want anymore. Hell, there are even a few developers out there right now making games with old dev kits for Sega Genesis that plan on an authentic looking physical release. These are the people who deserve your money, because they are the ones making what you really want. Personally, I'm working on an RPG in the style of the classic PS1 era RPGs. It's still only a prototype, but it's up to us to make these style of games if we want to keep playing them.

@@leeboy2k1 Even with fan lobbying, they're going to need it financially justified. I'm not pointing fingers, but in general, 'fans' have little to absolutely no knowledge about the costs of any release nor what kind of budget these companies are working with and what their margins are. I'm even more surprised when they claim to be 'fans' and spout such stuff about the financial side of the company yet never seem to own stock in the publicly traded business. (PRO TIP: If you want more say in Sega, try buying SGAMY). I get the frustration and all that, and venting to other people is cathartic and all that, but there are differences between being mad about something and being mad enough to actually do something about it. If everyone wanted, they could form a collective and buy out Sega/Sammy via a stock take over and put whomever they wanted to on the board of directors. Then when the company just releases Sonic over and over again and again, you'll know why: The company likely is recycling tech they already have to just stay afloat and things like Model 2 emulation is simply not financially viable. Sorry for being a stick in the mud and most of what I say here is just hearsay as well, but I'm just pointing out that many fans, myself included, have very little insider knowledge and so forming opinions about 'why' on the basis of these things tends to be speculation that, after parroted by enough people, somehow becomes fact. See Star Wars fandom for absolutely insane examples of this phenomenon. Oh, and one more thing: Businesses aren't guaranteed to last forever and a lot of time when a name is used, especially in 2020, of a well known business from the past, it's not the same company. Case in point, Activision died in 1993. Atari died in 1983, etc. etc. Currently, Sega is actually just a subsidary of Sammy and Sega proper died in early 2000's, so in a way, we're a bit lucky any old Sega titles get re-released, even if it's the same 3 games over and over. I know this doesn't take the disappointment away, but reality is both nuanced and cold. Just an aside, possibly something that would be interesting would be a crowdfunding campaign to help classic Sega staff buy the company's name. Fund Yu Suzuki and others to purchase the name...it's just as much of a possibility of happening as seeing Daytona 2 on Switch at this point and one's just a game and the other is an entire future...

Short of buying expensive arcade PCBs/cabinets, using emulators like MAME with uploaded ROMsets is the most reasonable way for an average person to play most of these rarer games. It's a shame though, as I know a lot of enthusiasts would certainly pay a reasonable price for re-releases of these games. They're sitting on a decent little chunk of potential profit.

As I've said before and always will when it comes to Sega - Sega and common sense rarely, if ever, go hand in hand. They have so many IP's to use and so many choices of platforms to release them on yet they don't even make much of an effort if they even bother at all. As much as I love Sega I am well past fed up of their terrible business choices and lack of care for so many of their IP's. Typical Sega being their usual asinine selves. If Shining Force 3 got a fully translated with all three parts release in the West - US, Europe and more - I would likely emit quite the fangirl squeal, I would love to play that game on Xbox One. Also a collection of their arcade titles could be interesting with games that haven't gotten home ports. They have this treasure trove of IP's to use and they rarely ever bother to really tap into it.

To play devil's advocate: M2 (the guys behind sega ages) are high in demand for ports, so maybe they don't have the resources to work on a ton of projects at once. Plus with current pandemic and Japan being notoriously bad at adapting to change a lot of their projects are probably delayed for the time being. Marketing is also a huge factor, despite the quality of games like Virtua Fighter it never sold as well as Tekken or Mortal Kombat. Still, im faithful in Sega. I have reached 35. Grew up with Sega and at some point Sony filled that gap when Sega left the console business. In today's world it's extremely easy to create a New Console. All you need is agreements with high end CPU and Graphic Card Companies not to mention the fact that Sega has their own Arcade Machines so they know how to create a good hardware. This new console can be supported by Sega's 70 Fantastic Franchises for a start which is more than Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft combined. You don't need a ton of money to commercialize your new console or making agreements with third party teams and indie developers. Programming has become very easy these day's with thousands of fantastic games even from indie developers. Sega could even put a kickstarter of the new console since in the past the Sega fans did supported two projects that have seen the light of day before Sega cancelling them. If the two whole personnel Atari company can create a console or Mattel Intellivision releasing a console after 37 years then so can Sega.

I mean, while the way they are treating their classic IPs definitely sucks, they've also been hitting a bunch of homeruns in their new releases, like Valkyria Chronicles 4 (now they just need to port VC 2 and 3 to modern consoles)and everything they've been doing with Yakuza's engine. And that's not even considering everything done by Atlus, which is currently arguably the best JRPG developer around on every console, in terms of both style and substance (though Nihon Falcom is close competition in at least in terms of substance and soundtracks). Now someone just needs to leave a copy of Skies of Arcadia, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and every classic Shining Force game in Atlus' breakroom and easier for them to reflexively remake them for modern consoles.

Rod Munch As far as the quality of their games was concerned, Sega was still making good games after the Dreamcast died. Xbox had Panzer Dragoon Orta and Crazy Taxi 3. PS2 had Virtua Fighter 4. The Nintendo GameCube had Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg. Their Dreamcast games including Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Shenmue II, Crazy Taxi, Skies of Arcadia, and Phantasy Star Online were all getting good ports that in many cases had additional content. They were even taking chances and being experimental with original games like Blood Will Tell on the PS2 and Fell the Magic: XY/XX on the Nintendo DS. In my opinion, 2006 was the end of old Sega and the beginning of the modern mediocre Sega.

I grew up on Sega, the Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast still rank among my favorite systems. I moved unto the Xbox since I viewed it as a pseudo Dreamcast 2 but Sega hasn’t released any of their classics to Xbox since the 360 (besides the Genesis Collection). They haven’t even allowed all their older Xbox games to come to back compat (I realize their are license issues with some). Why hasn’t there been a Saturn Collection, Dreamcast Collection, how about some arcade collections? They could theme the arcade collections by genre or, even cooler to me, how about by arcade boards? I’d love a System 16, 32, Model 1-3, etc collection and wouldn’t hesitate to buy them all. Sega more so than any other company in the games industry sits on a plethora of under developed and forgotten IP. Where’s Shining Force 3 (like mentioned in this video), where’s Skies of Arcadia, etc. I think the only hope for us old school Sega fans are passionate fan devs licensing projects. Monster World, Sonic Mania and Streets of Rage 4 were all great, it’s just sad that Sega doesn’t have the confidence in their older properties to give them the budgets they deserve. The lack of anything for the 60th anniversary makes it all too clear the current Sega brass doesn’t respect the history of this once great company. Hey at least Japan is getting the thumb stamp screen sized overpriced novelty Game Gear Mini so yay I guess.😢

The new Alex Kidd project might be fun,but as you stated it seems to be another studio handling it and not Sega themselves. What a depressing, and yet accurate video. The passion in your voice is how I feel. I am just grateful that I was a gamer in the era that belonged to Sega, and so have a life which was able to have that awesome life in it. From the arcade, to home, Sega were amazing- let us remember this Sega.

Fantastic video, it mirrors my own frustration with Sega constantly going back to the MegaDrive well and ignoring everything else in their back catalog. How many compilations of Megadrive ROMs with Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine do we need?

I really wish SEGA would revive their other Arcade, Saturn, and Dreamcast catalog especially porting them on current gen consoles the PS4 and XBone and the upcoming PS5 and XB Series X. I discovered so many gems over the years. I hope a lot of their lesser known IPs such as NiGHTS, Jet Set Radio, Skies of Arcadia, and Virtua Cop get the Streets of Rage 4, Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX, and Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap treatment.

More and likely sega lost the source codes for alot of their arcade and Saturn games, so releasing them would be a huge problem.

It still kills me that when Sega went third party 19 years ago, their individual development studios acted like second parties, keeping nearly every game exclusive to a single platform. Super Monkey Ball, Billy Hatcher, Sonic Adventure 1/2 only on Gamecube. JSRF, GunValkyrie, Panzer Dragoon Orta only on Xbox. Virtua Fighter 4, Shinobi, Yakuza only on PS2. Wasn't the whole point of going third party that they could put all their games on multiple pieces of hardware rather than just one, appeal to more fans, and make more money? Most of Sega's old studios were shut down after the Sammy merger, but Sega has continued with this philosophy of development in the years since. Valkyria Chronicles and Yakuza only on PS3. Yakuza only on PS4 this gen to begin with. Judgment, Sakura Wars, Fist of the North Star. Sega Ages only on Switch, as you said. Atlus is guilty, too. Yesterday, Persona 4 Golden was released on Steam, and within a few hours, its sales had surpassed the Vita version's lifetime sales. Meanwhile, EA, UbiSoft, and Activision put their games on every damn thing they can. Fuck money, I guess.

@@cnk9822 but releasing on the most sold console doesn't guarantee success. The Ps2's library was saturated at the time and alot of great games got overlooked anyway. Sometimes exclusivity to another platform can bring attention to it. But hey we'll never know.

Every point you make is 100% on point. I love Sonic as much as the next Sega fan, but theres so much more great stuff in their back catalog. Not sure why a Saturn or Dreamcast Mini haven't been announced yet. Seems like a sure-fire way to bring some hype back for Nights or Jet Set Radio.

Some of my fondest memories growing up involved Sega as well. I got a Genesis in '92 for Christmas and I got to play it before my siblings did (I was in the hospital with a broken leg at the time and stayed in my hospital room for a few days). The MK Blood code is burned in my brain (ABBACABB for life). My mother managed an arcade at the time and it had an entire section that had nothing but Genesis systems hooked up to TVs for people to play. There were line-ups out the door with bouncers hired to keep people in line when Virtua Fighter was released. I spent HOURS playing Star Trek TNG Echos of the past to the point where I had hand-drawn maps of the levels and puzzles folded up in the box and I'm sure I could beat that game blindfolded. Shinobi III was the first game I ever challenged myself to beat without losing a life. My Genesis served me well until its death in 2007 (Capacitors in the PSU died and destroyed the mainboard).

Couldn't agree more. Late 80s and early 90s arcade games are my fav retro games and there is so much gold in the arcade games catalog that never saw any home release, and it's just sad seeing those games just fade away. And Sega have a great oportunity to release them in their classic lines but don't seem to bother. Shame. I love the Hamster releases, but it's far from enough.

Keep bringing us the great games of Sega. It’s a shame that that they won’t bring the rest of there library to us. I’m talking about the gamers my age. The ones who grew up playing these games. I hope they don’t fall by the wayside, because they still have a great library that hasn’t seen daylight yet.I am hopeful.

Completely agree. As much as I love the Genesis classics (bought the collections on both Steam and Switch), I missed out on Saturn era Sega, and have been hoping they'd rerelease more games from then. Especially since I found this channel and learned about a lot of great Japan-only Saturn games that I would have killed to get my hands on in the 2D drought of the mid/late 90s. Also, the fact that arcade games like Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder haven't been rereleased yet is shameful. As an arcade kid in the late 80s, it's been amazing getting perfect ports of games I used to dream of owning, and GA:RoDA is still on that wish list. Keep up the great work, Sega Lord X!
