For a video I made on an airplane with 0 WiFi... not bad. I'm uploading this from my hotel and currently getting ready for dinner. Weird. I'm used to uploading in the morning, so this is not a normal feeling for me. I might try to vlog some of the trip but I suck at that. So we'll see.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from Reddit and my own email while giving advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

I haven't seen it on channel persay, but I have encountered it in real life. a DM would want us to play 6+ hour sessions (where all of us where casual players who used this as also time to hang out with friends, rather than full on gaming for 6 plus hours) just gaming, and got mad at several of us who had out of game responsibilities that required us to leave after that time limit (mine was 6 hours) if not before. the breaking point for me was when said DM made the combat harder because we had to leave after that time frame to get back at us for 'not caring enough' about the game, essentially saying he had more time to prep and made it seem like he fully planned on killing a few PCs over this. mind you, I usually give them an hour ahead headsup that 'hey, im going to have to leave in an hour' as well so it wasnt like the few that did have to leave, just left without warning. there was the dissconnect of the DM wanting to play a more serious, more focused game while the players did not, but the conversation of 'realignment' i guess would be the term for it, was never had.

This...actually reminds me of when the guy who would later be realized to be our group's problem player did a brief turn in the DM's seat. He basically got butt-hurt that our party was "overpowered" because we...had really great synergy of perfectly normal PC abilities, and a group that was fairly clever in their use. We were playing 4e, so everyone has combat powers, and thus were using them to pretty decent effect, and he decided that he didn't like this because we were "ruining" his combats, so he'd do things like decide that the monsters were immune to our abilities' rider effects (they'd take damage, but not be knocked prone, suffer forced movement, or whatever the ability did), and similarly would limit what skills we were able to use, or decide that a PC "couldn't" do something even with a high roll for obnoxious reasons (my Paladin was literally never able to use Stealth, because she wore heavy armor, and in his mind must therefore be incapable of moving without clanging like a crash cymbal...even if my total check was higher than the Rogue's Stealth check). He didn't quite accuse us of min-maxing, but he did constantly call us "overpowered" and say that we weren't actually playing "right," because we'd made a less-than-heroic mercenary party (with his full approval!). Kept trying to find an excuse to make my Paladin "fall," even though it's explicit in the 4e rules that this can't happen, or to claim that some of our magic items had a chance of "spell failure" making their enchantments just "self-destruct," etc., all in hopes of neutering what we could do. Some folks are just really quick to claim "cheating" or "min-maxing," just because their players are actually approaching the game mechanics with an ounce of understanding.

Intro story: Yikes. I’m glad you got out of there, OP! First story: D&D is great, but real life should always take priority. OP dodged a massive bullet there. Second story: Racism is not a mental health condition. Racism is a learned behavior, and anyone who doesn’t try to unlearn it is an asshole, no matter what mental conditions they have. Assuming that someone who does hateful things can’t learn to do better because of a mental illness is straight-up ableism. That table sounds like a miserable cesspool of bigotry, and I’m glad OP got out of there. Third story: That guy doesn’t know how to run a game. I actually love it when my players play their characters as competent. It’s fun to find a way to challenge PCs who are playing it smart. Sure, you guys can fly and avoid the traps on the dungeon floor, but what are you going to do about the possessed fairy doll with fully functional wings and a vested interest in killing you? What are you going to do about that Glyph of Warding that triggers and blasts an alarm summoning demonic reinforcements when you pass through that passage? I challenge my players, and they come up with clever solutions. It’s part of the fun of the game!

This is interesting. As the resident min/maxer of my group (But also, the resident DM who has only been able to be a player in 2 campaigns in 17 years cause no one wants to DM cause "it's to much work") I always make my characters as busted and versatile as humanly possible. Then stick to just hitting stuff with a big stick until something comes a long that is meant to bully us. I enjoy the roleplaying and world building, combat in the vast majority of TTRPGs is hot garbage, so I do my best to trivialize it if there is gonna be a party wipe, but otherwise am happy to do big strong meat stick caricatures. I DO think there is some validation to "min/maxing is actually basic character building." if you have a basic understanding of the way the game works, you aren't going to make a Barbarian that dumped STR and CON, has a massive Wisdom and Int. Maybe we have different opinions on what the phrase means. As a fairly experienced TTRPG player. The term is someone who goes out of their way to maximize Pros and minimize Cons. If I am a Barbarian in a group of 6 people, two of whom are casters. I probably don't need a high Charisma or Intelligence. These can be "dump" stats. If I'm a 3.5 Vancian Wizard, I don't need a Str above a 10. I can probably drop it to an 8. A Bard needs a high Charisma, Clerics need high Wisdom etc. these are all things that fall under the umbrella of min/maxing. Are there people who take it to the extreme? Sure. We have a name for those. We call them Munchkins. Perhaps that's what you are thinking of? Munchkins are the ones who try to "win" at the game, even if it means other people don't have fun anymore. Min/Maxers just enjoy tinkering with every part of a TTRPG system and seeing what they can do. Even if the result isn't always balanced. Most Min/Maxers (Who are not also Munchkins) I've had the pleasure of gaming with abhor ruining other people's fun. The whole purpose of pen and paper is to get together, be irresponsible with your sleeping schedule for a night hang out, roll shiny rocks and have fun. tl;dr Munchkin= The person who tries to "win" and ruin the game. Min/Maxer= Someone who enjoys tinkering with game systems and theory, but won't break the fun for others. DM= -The poor Sod who desperately wants to just play the game as a character, please, god, why won't someone just run a campaign. I just want a crumb of not knowing what comes next. I'm so thirsty for adventure.- The person who does all the world-building and tries to give the players a positive and memorable mission, filled with laughter, thrills and sorrows.
@Mokiefraggle
@Mokiefraggle 2 ай бұрын
@@bobhadababy4079 I think it's arguably even more granular that that. Munchkins are often the people who deliberately try to subvert the rules, basically trying to act like they do more than they actually do, for peak "I'm the best!" effect. Stacking things that shouldn't, claiming a spell or ability does something beyond what it actually should, etc., often while having a build that makes absolutely no sense. They pretend to have much greater knowledge of how things work, hoping to weasel their way past a less skilled/knowledgeable DM. A Min-Maxer is just trying to make sure that they're at the most statistically advantageous, in that they're playing to their strengths and trying to minimize their weaknesses. On a similar vein is the Optimizer, who is about making sure that they have a character who is getting the most out of their PC; their spell list only has the spells that will provide the most value, and they'll usually have chosen a class that they can get the most out of, like a Cleric or Druid back in the 3.x days. Both of these are products of varying levels of "system mastery," though the former is often more focused on stats and numbers (they're quicker to want those +X items, wanting to beef up numbers), where the latter is more concerned about quality over quantity, in many ways. Having one good spell over a large number of bad ones, and knowing how to get the best use out of all of them. Then there's the Average Player, who might know to keep their Wizard's INT as their top score, but might also feel the need to throw more points than necessary into another stat because it seems like it has an important effect (higher CON because better HP, for instance). They might also take spells that just "sound good," or "will help the whole group," rather than what's advantageous to their PC, or the most optimal "bang for its buck." This is often primarily due to a lack of system mastery, and can lead to a PC that's underpowered, or at least feels that way. Sounds like @ten_of_diamonds7575 has a group of Average Players, who might not have the level of system mastery to truly construct optimal PCs, while the other player is probably both a Min-Maxer and an Optimizer, and is building PCs that probably are going first/early in the combat, and are doing a ton of damage and/or have a full complement of buffs they're stacking in order to be able to just go to town, while the other players are just kind of plinking tiny bits of damage or lesser effects. And thus, when they felt that they weren't doing enough/were having all the fun sucked out of the game because they didn't really get to do much, they chose to ask the other player to tone his highly optimized play style down, only to have him basically try to tell them that _they're_ the ones min-maxing, and he's just building a normal character...which then kinda makes him sound more like a Munchkin than anything. He doesn't offer to help (most Optimizers I know are happy to help someone trick out a PC), but rather seems to want to make them feel like he's not the problem by saying "I'm just making a perfectly normal character!", so that he can continue to be the dude who's better at everything.

One of the biggest things I try to make clear to new players that I work with (somehow I end up this role a lot now? despite being a player) is that, at the end of the day, dnd is fun, but it’s still a game. While it’s respectful to show up on time and communicate, it should never take priority over your work, family responsibilities, friend quality time, and education. If it’s messing with their mental health, they should either step back or figure out what the root issue is in the game that is triggering that. It is a game, and one we all are playing for fun. If someone stops having fun, well, then it’s not a game anymore and dnd has lost its true purpose. I always try to make this context clear. It’s not me trying to drive anyone away. But it’s something I have had to remind my fellow players about when they are letting guilt eat away at them for having to cancel or not be available or just aren’t feeling in a good head space to play. Sure, I want to play and yes, sometimes this means a session gets cancelled. Sometimes it is cancelled for an extended period of time. That isn’t a bad thing, even if all we want to do is play dnd. But it’s a hobby, a pastime, something meant for fun. So yeah, should never be first priority. I have had some of fellow players thank me for the reminder. Heck, I’ve had a friend I play multiple different campaigns with also thank me for the reminder recently. He was having some serious internet and tech issues and could not get it working for the entire week, ended up missing pretty much all the sessions we had together. He was so upset about it. Once he managed to get stuff working again, I sat him down for a chat and discussed it and I reminded him that it’s alright and no one holds it against him. I caught him up on what he might have missed and had him discuss with the DMs on stuff for his characters with those missed sessions (yes, multiple, we play different campaigns with different DMs at different tables with different groups, with us being a friend duo. He is just really fun to play with as a fellow player). But yeah, sometimes that reminder is needed, even for experienced people, and sometimes especially for those games that are our favorite. I get it. I hate missing my favorite games too. It’s not pleasant but it is a game and I try to remember that. Not saying I retract my investment. I love my games too much for that and play in very roleplay and storytelling heavy campaigns. This means a lot of investment on my part. It just means I remind myself of the context and purpose of dnd so I don’t get consumed by my hobby to the point of an actual addiction that is bad for my health.

Psychology majors are really common in USA schools since a lot of people are like "I want a degree but I'm not sure what I want to DO yet. Oh psychology sounds interesting!" Not taking into account that for a psych degree to be worth much you need a masters degree at a minimum. In Japan their version is the economics degree. My advice for any prospective college student is to pick a major that will get you a job. You can minor in the "fun" stuff but your college degree will be fucking expensive so pick something that will let you get a job.

The last one made me remember when I was "coerced" (aka bribed with nuggets" to cover for a sick DM (I wasn't even in that group, I just watched on the side while they played. It was at a private "activity centre" kind of, we basically rented a basement and turned it into a gaming lair). They'd seen me writing stories so they thought I'd be perfect for a shorter side quest. I got the books put in my lap while two of the players (5 in total) went to go get my food 😂 And I pretty much made the speediest reading to be able to come up with something for them (I also had a problem of telling people 'no'). It wasn't the longest of games, it lasted like 5.5 hours, and most of it I made up on the fly (I had my sketch book with me, so I did some quick sketches for layouts, environments, etc, as we played). For the combat I was lost for most of it 😅 but I didn't want it to be too easy or too hard, so most enemies were between 2-4 levels higher than they were, it sounded fair in my mind. But at the very least they had fun, so my fumbling wasn't for nothing 😂

I once had a dm for 3.5E that didn’t allow “tome of battle” classes because he thought they were “overpowered”. Yet the casters in the group who could practically solo encounters were just fine. That same dm also had a dragon turtle swallow my monk when he knew i wouldn’t have a blade to cut myself free. Meanwhile everyone else only got bite or claw attacks. So when my monk died i created a druid to show him what overpowered ACTUALLY meant

My group switched over to PF1 and swapped out for Spheres of Power and Spheres of Might instead of traditional classes. @@bobhadababy4079 I absolutely love the Spheres systems. And yeah, you can make some seriously busted builds, but the system largely works on the premise that if everything is overpowered, then nothing is. Though it definitely requires more work from the DM, because you can't just grab standard monsters and expect them to stand up against Spheres characters at 'appropriate' CR. Also, that is a system where the rules are generally written really well, and where they aren't, there's enough ambiguity that any player is going to know that they need to ask their DM how they think it works.

Those people, he’s upset that those people were “too mechanical to feel the cold.” my guy.. same with the gas masks, again, human lungs are weak and therefore are going to be replaced, and by the sound of it, one of them was following Nurgal since he wanted to create a viral bomb, so even if they could feel the polluted atmosphere, I highly doubt it would’ve done anything to them anyway.

A lot of people I know pursued some psychology courses purely out of self interest because the stigma of mental health and the delightful circumstances of American living make life a living hell for people who have disorders or who are neurodivergent, and inconvenient at best to get a diagnosis.

I feel like I did a "gotcha" bad guy last week when the session the week before one of my players I had set the party up with the small town they were in was surrounded with some Gnoll camps waiting to engage. So the party sets up with the town's help and they go into a mexican standoff. Well one of the party decides to fly up and around looking for a leader or something of important. I rolled my dice and was like okay you spot a winged being that is off behind a large pavilion behind the main Gnoll camps, it was a Cambion but I didn't reveal that at the time. I also told him he was accompanied by a small band of Orcs from a well known clan in the area specialized in fey hunting (feywilds game, most players are fey of some kind). He says he wants to goad that winged thing into a 1v1. I end session cause I actually hadn't set up a leader for the engagement and him flying around gave me a reason to have one, k cool lets go. Well after session and the rest of the week he kept bringing up his abilities with spells and sword (system is 3.5 and he's playing a duskblade) and was so ready to fight that winged being. I was getting irritated that he wasn't gonna go ask his party for help against the thing he saw so I built him like a PC of that level. Instead of npc level/gear/stats from the book recommendations I rolled stats and used the 'wealth by level' to factor out his gear, built a cleric/warpriest with spells/feats the works and some decent gear. When the fight goes down and everyone is doing their thing and chaos is ensuring, PC heads out to find that thing and starts getting hammered by the fey hunter Orcs shooting cold iron tipped arrows, he doesn't fly away he just stays there getting hit. Finally after a couple spell exchanges the Cambion comes up on wing to engage and starts wrecking house on the Duskblade. He texsts me to say his character is at 23 health after a few rounds while my bad guy was still at 112 with healing spells to spare. Instead of backing down he was going to stay in the fight and die trying as the bad guy's neck move was going to be flame strike and just send the scorched body flying to the ground, another flying PC intervened and helped the Duskblade escape. Some RP ensued and they were able to be talked down and go their separate ways but I just felt with the players going on and on I had to humble him a bit and break that 1-man army mentality, and for whatever reason even after getting his world rocked he was keeping that mindset.

Regardless of if it's a "joke" or not. . The rorschach test is not 100% accurate. But the basis of the study, that association can be very telling of a persons deeper feelings, is very much real. . From the sound of things in that story, it was because the world setting was literally Earth. And the country was therefore a real-world country, and from the sound of things, racist dude wasn't doing it in-character...this was a genuine belief. That's what made the other players uncomfortable. Also, some people just find racism unpleasant, whether based in real-world or in a fantasy realm. I know I found it really grating when a former problem player in our old college group would trot out fantasy racism, because he wasn't doing it for world-building purposes, or to be in-character. He was doing it 100% to be a jerk to other players, because he never directed it at NPCs. It was always specifically zoned in on other players, usually to single out whomever he had decided he didn't like at the time (note, "didn't like" often meant a player that was being lighthearted when he wanted hardcore violence and grimdark, or just whose play-style he'd decided he disapproved of). And similarly, this is often a reason for players to be uncomfortable with it in-game from a DM: fantasy racism is almost always going to affect their PCs, not the NPCs, and it's only going to make things unnecessarily harder, and can often feel like a player is being singled out for mistreatment. It's the sort of thing where it can get really difficult to not feel like the DM is intentionally doing this to make you suffer, if you're the only PC of that race in the group.

The racism one: It's totally fine to play a racist character. There's nothing wrong with playing a character that hates elves or dwarves or aliens or white people or asians or whatever. Especially in this case, it seems like the player was trying to do that, which is why the rest of the group didn't see a problem with it, and also why the player themselves was so apologetic and accommodating about it when they were confronted. I don't think it's okay to try to demonize the group just because they didn't see a problem with it. It does sound like the OP did the right thing leaving the group though, because it's not for me or anyone else to say what a player should be okay with.

There's a difference between a team-focussed character and an incompetent character. From the explanation the DM did everything he could to put that player into a situation where their character had no options, up to and including having soldiers under their command refuse orders. Then, when the player was frustrated because the DM didn't take his player characters into account in any way and tried to make up for that weakness within the rules of the game, the DM got angry? If I spent an hour kicking you in the nuts, you tried to get some nut protection and I accused you of being a prick for mitigating the crap I just put you through, would that make sense to you? There are tons of ways to involve such a character in a way that lets them be useful instead of worthless, but if the DM doesn't give the player any opportunity to use any of their skills during a campaign, that's just bad etiquette. Blowing up at them because they didn't have fun when you made sure they wouldn't also doesn't seem very stable.
