Like many of that era he was an intensely private man, a professor of agriculture. On May 21st he died of a cerebral hemorrhage, while teaching a lecture. That's why he never returned to Hachiko. But when his partner Yaeko died, some of the ashes of Hachiko, Hidesaburo and Yaeko were buried together, finally reuniting them.

​@@user-bv1ci3xf6h I would recommend you to find and watch Hachi-ko Monogatari, a 1987 Japanese film, which may available in English. It is of course dramatised but I suppose you'll see the image how the bond between Mr Ueno and Hachi was like.
