You can thank pre-recorded vocals and instruments, along with pitch correction lightly applied to tighten up the vocals. None of this is ‘live”. A lot can be manipulated in post-production, which is why this sounded so good.

The banjo is present in the original, too; it's just not as obvious because it's only during the chorus, and it's not as prominent in the mix. It does shift the feel of the song quite a bit to have it front-and-center, especially in an acoustic set where it's not competing with amplified electric guitars and a drum kit. :)

John McFee has done the banjo playing since he's come back (a long time ago, but no one but Patrick has been there continuously). He said he realized his voice is an instrument and needs to take care of it, so he does vocal exercises when he isn't touring, rests it during concert season, and warms it up before a show. He never did that in the heyday of the Doobies!

I bought my mom and dad tickets for their 50th wedding anniversary two years ago to see y’all 50th concert in west palm. It was postponed twice but was finally scheduled in my moms birthday on June 2 2022 we all couldn’t wait as I grew up on this music. Sadly my dad passed away in September. I’m so sad he will not be with us. I would love a shout out for him (Glen Angel) when we come to concert. I love you daddy ❤️

yes indeed the TJ signiture strum..if you could get that right and get the muting right on the money it opens up a lot to Doobie Brothers cover playing I find.. it's like the classic Keith Richards hammer on in open G. he uses that all the time hammer on those two fingers...

I love this song so much! Back in the day when I played music I sang lead on this (except on the chorus, where I switched to the lowest harmony part to rest my voice) and played bass at the same time. This crowd pleaser is so much fun. Tom Johnston's vocal is timeless and still brings me back to my youth! Rock on, boys!
