The Doors, amazing!! I was probably 7/8 and I remember my 16 year old brother taking his Harley across country to California...he always sent me postcards and pictures, I have pictures of him with Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix...I keep them in a safety deposit box and I think I'm going to will them to my grandson...my brother told me so many amazing stories!! My brother has passed on but all the memories keep him alive!! My brother and I were always extremely close, he was my big brother and I was his little sis, he never called me by my name, only called me sis!! My brother was a very quiet, laid-back type of person, I was always the rowdy one lol...we went to the Pink Floyd, Dark Side Of The Moon tour in Phoenix in the 70s, what a fantastic time we had!! Keep up the great work, I love what you do!!

Tim - how incredible that your parents saw that particular concert -- Jim's last concert. From time to time since 2020 I watch one clip of him over and over from that concert because he was trying to wake everyone up. That's why he used to yell out "WAKE UP!!" at his audience. But at this concert he went on a rant about how we're all a bunch of slaves and asked "How long are you going to take it?" This clip of him fits what's happening today to a T! Here it is (he's swearing in it): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pt6TiMtlmquReWw.html&ab_channel=Krzysiek86PL God, how I wish he was still alive today. Isn't it interesting that he had to flee the country and then was killed after this concert? I heard he said he was drunk at this concert and that's why he went off. You know, his father was responsible for the incident in the Gulf of Tonkin which got the U.S. involved in the Vietnam War. I know his dad has his own story which is that he meant to try to do the right thing but he was put in between a rock and a hard place. At any rate, Jim knew things about how our society is run and it seems like he really wanted to let us know we need to stand up for ourselves and not put up with the power elite trying to control us. I'll always be grateful for Jim Morrison and his monumental effort. He tried, Man, he tried.

I worked on Santa Barbara bowl back in 2007. we upgraded the stage to the concrete pavilion it is today. Every morning i would drink my coffee before work started. standing on the stage gazing out to the empty seats where countless artist from The Doors, Led zepplin, beasty boys, bob marley . To stand up acts like Robin Williams, Richard Pryor and so many more legends played. Was truly an amazing feeling, you could feel the energy all around you. they had a green room too and a wall where countless people have signed. we got to go check it out a few times. And see the countless signatures and relics on the walls bellow stage. A cool cat that ran the place, his name was "Hawaiian Joe" couldn,t have picked a cooler dude for the job. I hope he still works there and is doing good.

Saw Bob Dylan and Paul Simon at the Bowl in June of '99, six rows back from the stage. Val Kilmer sitting a few seats over from us with a beautiful woman, and Jack Nicholson just behind us with his head thrown back the entire time with an epic grin. Magical night. Saw Tom Petty there, too, his second to last concert before he died. I've seen several others as well, but those two stand out. Being a Doors fan, and having met Ray, every time I'm there I feel their ghosts.

I was one of those 18k people there that night, never dreaming it'd become a historic concert. I just wanted to see the Doors. Surprised, looking back, my parents allowed me to go, I was so young. First concert I ever went to. Don't remember they were late, do remember the Chambers Brothers opened for them. The only song I remember them playing was Time Has Come Today. They were good, I liked them, even if now they seem an odd choice to open for the Doors. I'm positive they played The End. I remember Jim Morrison burping into the mic during a long quiet spot. It did seem like he was high on something, but I was way to young to even guess what it might have been or know that for certain. I am sure they played Light My Fire, probably Crystal Ship, and I think Whiskey Bar. Not sure if I'm mixing up the album with the concert on others or not. I remember him wearing the brown leather pants with the silver concho belt, but not the black shirt. My seat was towards the center, just behind where the box seats ended. Thought they were attached folding wood theater seats, but I could be wrong, they may have been more like benches with backs. Thanks for this video. It was a lot of fun seeing the Bowl for the first time in decades and revisiting the location of my very first concert. I saw someone uploaded some footage of it and am going to watch that next. Curious how much of it I'll remember.

I've seen many classical concerts and a couple of rock shows at the Bowl over the years (John Fogerty, Radiohead, and Oasis). It's a great venue to see live music. I wish I'd been around to see The Doors back in 1968. I saw them in 2002 when my brother was actually working for Ray Manzarek as his keyboard technician on their reunion tour. He did that for almost a year and even got to play with Robby Krieger and Ray. The best part for him, he says, was hearing stories about Jim Morrison. He was only the crazy guy when he was drinking and usually on stage. Most of the time he was quiet, writing his poetry or reading. The movie that Oliver Stone made completely missed the part of Jim that was an intellectual and an artist. Love watching your videos, and Happy Halloween.

Man, I LOVE The Doors! I play drums in a punk band and I get the Doors hate from people all the time and I tell them Just watch the Doors at the Hollywood Bowl and when Jim starts going off about a grasshopper, watch the 3 musicians of the band and how they have to start improvising right there on the spot! How they are all looking at each other and raising an eyebrow or giving a nod when they want to change. They get softer and louder depending on whatever Jim is going off about and they do it flawlessly. THAT was the real magic of The Doors.

I had the biggest crush on Jim Morrison back in the late 1960's. He called himself "The Lizard King". I believe to this day that Jim Morrison was some kind of witch. I also thought that Jim Morrison had a rich melodic voice, and that some of his band members secretly enabled his drug habit out of sheer jealousy of him.

Joanne, I have always believed everything you said in your comment. Jim was magic himself, and I can see how he would have a lot of jealous people around him, including his own band menbers. That was cool! I have that concert on VHS and had it converted to DVD. Not only did they have dinner with Mick Jagger and some of the other guys Mick Jagger was somewhere up front for the show. I've read that's one of the reasons Jim was nervous. Also another cool fact the leather pants Jim has on are now owned by Alice Cooper. Anyway another great video thanks for taking us on the adventure.

Ok I gotta chime in I just went to the bowl September 2022 to see Loggins and Messina they played for 1 hour and then Kenny Loggins played for an additional two hours it was amazing they sound the same as they did back then but I’m a millennial so I can’t verify that - I was jealous at all the folks there obviously flower children and baby boomers there and older talking about how they say them in 1972 and talking about stories of yesteryear made me so jealous. however I think me and my bf were the youngest two at this concert it was packed! Best concert I ever been to. The bowl is a amazing venue and the staff was so pleasant. The number system is weird I gotta say we were confused before we sat but ultimately made sense when we got to where we needed to be in a super Kenny Loggins fan

I would LOVE to see a show at the Hollywood Bowl some day--- I have seen many pictures of big artists who have performed there in the day, from Bowie, the Who, Elton John & of course, the Doors... It always had a majestic charm that I've noticed from afar, viewing it from magazines like the Rolling Stone, Creem Magazine, and many others... Nice coverage as always GriMMs--- loved the trivia about taking acid before performing at the Hollywood Bowl... Lemme tell ya, i dropped a lot of acid in my day, and I would NEVER, and I mean NEVER drop it in front of thousands of people, let alone perform, as well (OUCH!!!!!).... that's a big recipe for a bad, bad trip...... OOf!.... So KooL you, and your dad have the Doors in common, as a good thing to kick around between you two ---- makes the years go by a lot smoother.... Thanks, again for taking us ALL along on another, 'Line-up the Shot' episode... all is LOVE, and Happy Halloween, GriMMs... :^)""""""""

Good Luck! I live here in S. CA and have only gone 3X and it's a horrible experience. The location might be good for acoustics but the sight lines are bad, the parking is beyond bad to the point they still have those old lots where they stack the cars and you CAN NOT leave until all the other cars blocking you are gone! If they ever have a true emergency...good luck getting out of that place in under 30 minutes. It's just an old venue, and it shows everywhere.

Saw the last 2 Van Halen shows in 2015, the last Black Sabbath LA show in 2016, the last Tom Petty show before he died in 2017 and Heart in 2019. The Bowl is amazing, you have to go if you get the chance.

Thank you Michael for this incredible trip down THE DOORS history lane at the Hollywood Bowl. A great episode! I love THE DOORS. When I lived in LA. I visited the Bowl on several occasions & I got on stage once while it was empty & walked Jim's balancing steps at the lip of the sound pool as in the classic photos you show in this episode. I hope the Bowl remains forever. Keep your fantastic episode's coming!
