Make a magnetic stirrer... an automatic mixer... for your shellac and other woodworking finishes. Fast, easy, inexpensive! In this episode, Steve makes a magnetic stirring device to mix his shellac from parts costing less than $20.

The demo video was made using alcohol, because when I added the shellac flakes, the solution was so dark the picture just looked like a jar of shellac - you couldn't see much. Watching it live, though, it looks about the same. You have to turn the speed up a little to get the vortex once you add the flakes, since it is thicker. Glad I put the speed control on. Thanks for watching!

Yes you do! The two disc magnets should be mounted so they are facing opposite polarity, I.e. one with north up, the other with north facing down. Most of these rare earth magnets are not labeled as to polarity, so you may to experiment a little. Thanks for the question!

Great video. I would make a couple of suggestions though, firstly, if you remove the blades from the fan, the motor won't have to do so much work. Secondly, you can buy very cheaply a little connector for the power supply do you can just plug the supply in instead of having it permanently on the box. I think I'm going to make one of these myself. By the way, PTFE is teflon, the stuff you get on non stick pans, and the stuff they coat the space shuttle in.

Some say use a coffee grinder. Don’t know where my extra is. I just put it in a ziplock bag and crushed to a powder in minutes. Magnetic mixers aren’t couple hundred bucks. 30 on amazing. Put together.

You can get the spin bars at Amazon.com, "sometimes" you can find them on eBay (search for "magnetic stirring spin bar"), or at a local lab supply house (if you live in a big enough town).

PTFE is Teflon so those will work fine for alcohol and they should last forever as long as you are not harsh on them cleaning the shellac off. I would just clean them in alcohol on the stirrer if I had to have them clean again but as long as you only use them for one thing I see no need to clean them.

I was thinking about what I had around for parts, and remembered I had one of those smoothie makers with a heated plate for hot drinks. I stopped using it because it was a pain to clean (and I know the microwave settings to make hot chocolate straight in the drinking mug), but I think I know what to do with it now...

I suppose that a magnetic stirrer could be made any size, limited only by the motor, the magnets, the size of the spin bars available, and your imagination. Remember, though, the mixing vessel needs to be glass or plastic (not ferrous metal), so a metal paint bucket would not work.

I wish you would have shown the mixer being used on the shellac, not just a container of water.

are the magnets set on the same pole up or opposite?

i think one should be opposite, else you would be pushing one side of the stirrer away.
