I would love if you could cover Bruce McArthur! he’s a serial killer from toronto who had been killing people since they suspect the late 80’s, and he targeted men in the gay village in toronto. I don’t see a lot of people talk about him so it’d be interesting to see you do a video on him!

I don’t think they created it, but I think they used their resources to achieve the standard put forth by society. It’s been fluctuating back and forth since the dawn of time, they didn’t outright cause it. They also made those changes because they also felt insecure. I’m not super mad at them or bugged tbh

"Ideal body shapes" were often historically achieved with foundation garments like corsets, bustles, bras, gurtels, etc. I think the change from a silhouette achieved with undergarments to a silhouette achieved with surgery is interesting and highly toxic. Obviously waist trainers and such shouldn't be the standard but they're a whole lot less physically damaging than having organs removed or a BBL to achieve a certain look
@lordarthur2165
@lordarthur2165 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly, like I don't think they expect to people really being in the ideal body shape when naked or semi naked like people expect today. (And to add to that in the Victorian and Edwardian eras they used paint to edit photos of famous people, so don't believe everything in those old photos jbnhnh) And also corsets were a functional equivalent to bras, so they're not bad, actually they are awesome for back pains.

It’s so weird to think that people would talk to their sisters this way. I struck gold to even have a sister, I’m lucky that she’s a wonderful person and friend to me too. Obviously people don’t always have the best relationships with their family or siblings, because sometimes their families are just not good people and it’s better to not have them in your life. It makes me so sad that adult women could behave this way though.

It's sad because Khloe was easily the most normal and relatable one on KUWTK I'd go so far as to say she was most peoples fave, and it's sad to see her self esteem destroyed not just by the media and the public but her own family, like in all honesty the whole family have major body image issues. I blame Kris for putting the money and fame before her kids. Remember the ep when Kylie & Kendal wanted to model and Kris was supportive of Kendal as she already had the frame with the same breath she made Kylie feel like shit & crushed her dreams because she was shorter and not as skinny? Like??? They were fucking children.

I once seen a picture of Kim in a bathing suit on the beach and with her fake behind, I actually started laughing. I thought it looks extremely comical and ridiculous. I mean, it was downright silly looking. And the thing is, she was blessed with a naturally beautiful face and physique. She never needed any surgeries anywhere whatsoever. It's actually quite sad when you think about it. I think to each their own, and do what you wish, but it's certainly not something I'd personally ever go do. At least not to the extreme like that. I'd still want to look natural.

I admit it is sad that Khloe is under all this pressure- but like Swoop terrifically pointed out- she had the chance to go against that pressure and break free from it and did not. The fact she understands the struggle the standard does to someone because she’s going through and continues to help it… I don’t feel sad for her. Then again, to an extent every time we try to live up to the standard aren’t we all doing what Khloe is? Complaining yet still conforming? She is at the very least showing the struggle while others just hide it scoff at her struggle (cough cough Kim and kylie). I don’t feel sad though for her because millions of other girls are going through exactly what she is- or worse- without the inside knowledge and resources she has to put a very big stop to it. We may be a small part of the problem when we try conforming to it, but have very little power individually to change it. At least some of us are starting to group up our small impacts and start some positive change! We all may fault now and then but most of us working toward rebelling from the standard into our own healthy standards. Khloe on the other hand…big part of the problem with power to make a big impact. she has more of a responsibility and needs to push through the standard more than anyone.

When I was in high school, Nicki Minaj and Kim K were popular, but I was in the Midwest where no one had an ass but me, so I was still made fun of. Now, ten years later, I usually get questions on my workout methods or how I got my ass. My mom would have more complaints about this subject because she grew up in the 80's where our big butt genetics were no where near appreciated nor popular. She even hooked up with a coworker and the next day she caught him making fun of her thighs and ass because of the cellulite to another coworker. Society beauty standards are pretty shitty and shows people's true colors when they interact with someone that's "in" or "out".

My boobs refuse to shrink despite losing half of my body weight and I'm going bald. So I'll just shave my head and tell myself that I'm good enough and don't care what others think of me. Oh, and I have an ileostomy so I'm incontinent. We are all perfect despite our real or imagined flaws and we should be lifting one another up when we're at a low point. We're all unique and the K family need to find something better to do. Cos being rich sure makes people bitchy, insecure and stupid. Keep living your life and step away from devices and embrace the beautiful world n nature that surrounds us. I'd rather be honest with my integrity intact with all my flaws n mistakes than a silicone filled fake who worries they're not relevant, so amp up drama and toxicity. You are good enough as you are.

The interesting thing is that historically, women (at least in Europe, don't know enough about other areas to speak about them) weren't usually expected to have the perfect body; there was an ideal silhouette but everyone would just use their clothing to create that silhouette. Don't have a full enough chest or hips for what's in fashion? Just add padding, and you can change the padding or corset shape depending on what's in style. Whereas now there's the expectation that the actual body itself must match whatever the current beauty standard is, which is basically impossible for most people. So people's attitudes about the Evils of Corsets seems kind of misplaced when they think dieting and plastic surgery are normal.

My mum talks a LOT about how everything was fake in the 80s but none of it was *permanently* fake. There was huge hair, so much makeup and skinny waists but it was additions not alterations (obvs that’s not true of everything, but none of it was anywhere near what it is today) and it’s really so true, up until only recently women exclusively wore shapewear and tailored clothing to achieve their body shapes, but people knew what they looked like underneath (like humans) Marilyn has always been a great example of that, bc she was toned and “perfect” but even she had rolls, her boobs hung when not supported, her body looked like a body and it wasn’t seen as a bad thing. If a woman posted pictures looking like Marilyn now they’d be berated or told they were “brave”

to add to that, in Africa there has always been 1 shape, and we,ve never follow the ''beauty stanbdard'', in Africa curves are standard and that's it. It has never change through time, the same old feminine curvy body, and there if you are not that curvy, it is okay men are still attracted to you. However, when I came here to this western world. I was shocked by what I learned, how can a society make the body of a woman an ''object'' or a 'trend'' ?!?! the entire western world is fucktop to be honest, a human body is not an object to be played with it is sacred. FASHION, CLOTHES, SHOES, WIGS are objects and trendy but a body???!!! it's fucktop. In Africa, people don't care about this type of things, you can have cellulite and nobody care, nor men or women. Anyways, just my thoughts......

Hey, quick note, the tiny feet thing from the Han dynasty is like not just small feet. It’s like baby shoe small feet, and you get that from foot binding (only look it up if you have a strong stomach). Foot binding is basically a process where they repeatedly break and reshape your feet over years since childhood so you have these very tiny feet. It’s super classist because it basically prevented women from really being able to stand/walk for long periods of time. But tbh (and a little off topic) from what I’ve noticed, a lot of beauty standards throughout time come from being able to exude wealth. Like fuller figure means you didn’t have to worry about food, pale skin meant you didn’t have to go outside a lot (being tan is a similar thought like oh you can spend all day laying in the sun), slim meant you could afford to focus on your looks, and plastic surgery costs $$$

Ok, confession, the clip at the start of this doc was the most kardashian footage I’ve seen and honestly I’m appalled at how mean and violent the sisters are with each other. My family wouldn’t have put up with that crap for one single minute when we were little, and by the time we were adolescent we were great friends, players of board, card, video and dice games, sharers of vacations and adventures. I cannot believe the toxicity!

I've never been conventionally attractive and some might consider me to be ugly, and when I was younger this bothered me a lot, but the older I get, the more glad I am to not be pretty. I don't want the people around me to value me because I look good, I just want to be valued as a person.

there’s no such thing as being attractive or ugly, it’s all man-made social structures that developed over time. beauty is quite literally in the eye of the beholder. because not everyone is going to find you beautiful or ugly. we only think we’re “less attractive” because of the standards set over time ig: skinny, thin waist etc but they change every decade. you’re not ugly. no one is. society is just fucked. but i promise you you’re just as beautiful as these people you think are “pretty”. have a good day gorgeous :)

@@meluhhhnee that’s not true. For instance, children and babies sometimes cry at an ugly person whereas they laugh and smile at a pretty person. A 6 month old doesn’t have any standards when it comes to look and children haven’t really been exposed to societal expectations for looks. Beauty and ugliness is real. I also have a genetic defect that causes my teeth to be small and brown.. And yes, I was bullied for it my whole life even by GROWN ADULTS and still struggle with the constant fear of being perceived as "disgusting" or "dirty" even though my teeth were treated years ago and look "normal" now.. Honestly, the way I put myself down all the time and didn't even want to leave the house as a teenager all because of some toxic beauty standards that teach young people they are worthless if they are different.. I can't even describe how angry that makes me feel :(

@MxchiefMaykr 2 жыл бұрын
While there have always been beauty standards, and most of those have been largely unattainable by the average person throughout history, I think it was understood a lot better in the past that those standards were more of an ideal rather than an expectation. For the most part, the beauty standards of the past were pretty heavily based around things like "the monarch of my area was born looking like this" or " the upper classes here can afford to eat enough to get plump" or "these people are upper class enough to not have to work in the sun so their skin is paler" and people knew that if they couldn't fill that standard, that was largely due to them not being born wealthy. With the modern era making cosmetic surgeries safer and more available, as well as people with money are so often dishonest about getting that surgery/ using editing and filter, of course it's no wonder beauty standards have become so damn toxic. It's no longer a "I wish I were rich and successful enough that I could afford to display it this very expensive luxury" and instead "I need this luxury to become rich and successful, everyone who is rich and famous got this way because they already had it naturally." Shapewear has always been a thing! In the 1800's everyone knew everyone wore corsets and padding and carefully designed garments that gave the illusion of the ideal shape of the time, no one alive at the time actually thought that people actually looked like that. Picture editing has always been a thing! No one back in the 1600's had the perfect skin we see in their portraits, but the way we interact with images of the rich and famous has really changed. Beauty Standards have ALWAYS been a thing, but the way we interact with them has changed dramatically.

There’s also a newer term I found and really like as a fat person which is body neutrality (Tee Noir brought it up from someone else in a video). It’s not about placing all our value in beauty and being beautiful but accepting that not all bodies are exceptional some are just OK and that’s fine and valid

I absolutely prefer body neutrality to the usual approach to conversations about beauty. I would rather we put our effort into dismantling the systems that require people to be attractive to be valued as opposed to just expanding who gets to be considered beautiful. People shouldn’t need to be aesthetically pleasing to be worthy of respect and taking up space.

I think body positivity and body neutrality both have their place but I have grown to really prefer body neutrality myself too! and while I myself don’t have a physical disability I’ve found body neutrality is more of a realistic and accessible term that is preferred by certain disabled people and especially people with chronic illnesses. I won’t speak for everyone obviously but I think a lot of people find it kind of hollow and difficult to find a way to “love” their own body when their bodies are the reason they might be in constant physical pain.

I was a teen in the 90’s and it was awful. I naturally have a pretty good sized chest, but it doesn’t defy gravity, which was another expectation. I also grew up in the “tanning era”… I attribute my still young looking skin to the fact that I avoided that.. Mainly because I’m like, WHITE, white and I don’t just burn.. I burst into flames upon stepping into the sunlight. But, I remember being so embarrassed about being so pale. Ig there really are multiple angles that each of us saw differently according to the color of our skin? You say you felt you needed to be lighter, and I was literally picked on for not being darker. I remember so vividly one summer, I was wearing shorts and saw a .. idk if I’d say friend? Acquaintance maybe..? And he dead ass said “Have you ever heard of a tanning bed??”. Shit you not. Then, flash forward about 10 years, and I lost my mom to skin cancer and she tanned every summer 😢 It’s really enlightening to hear about experiences that were so different, yet, so similar to my own.

Hi Swoop! I love you and your videos and aam so grateful for your kind and understanding perspective! If it helps, people can experience body dysmorphia (which is what you were discussing) and there is also Body dysmorphic disorder, which is a disorder. They can definitely be used interchangeably, but not all people who experience body dysmorphia have body dysmorphic disorder. Thought that might be a cool point to add with this topic. Back in highschool I was doing lots of swimming, because of this my thighs got quite large, like crush a melon with them sized. I was bullied by the other girls for my body shape because I was healthy and muscular. I have since found both myself and my own beauty standards even though I don't identify as female anymore. The stuff I went through with highschool still impacts me today and my self worth. Your video was amazing and I loved how you talked about how they established the standard. I go through body dismorphia every day, part of it because of my gender identity but also because of my weight (despite being in a healthy weight medically) and I will now binge more of your videos. I haven’t gotten super far but for anyone interested costuming drama has a video with someone I can’t remember sorry and Abby Cox that talks about historic size inclusivity. I think the buzzfeed video really messed up because it’s desirable shape of silhouette not desirable shape or size of actual body. So if you were larger in the bust they would just pad your hips out to match or vice versa or whatever. The modern emphasis on actual body size is exactly that modern
