I ate only Sardines for 72. This is what I learned. I tracked my blood sugar, ketone production, and my weight. I first heard of this challenge on Dr. Boz KZfaq channel. She has a ton of great information about the Keto and Carnivore diet. Go check it out.
These where my Blood Sugar and Ketone readings for each morning, including the day before I started. I tested every morning 1 hour after I got up. My readings before I began were. (Monday Morning. I began the challenge Monday at Noon)
Mon Glucose 94 Ketones 3.1
These were my readings during the challenge and 2 days following
Day Glucose Ketones
Tues 87 3.5
Wed 84 3.3
Thur 84 3.7
Fri 86 4.4
Sat 86 3.2
This is the Keto Mojo Meter I use amzn.to/43wbTSX
If you have any questions that I didn't cover let me know in the comments!

That's a great result. I would guess for me, I'd already been eating mostly carnivore for 8 or 9 months, and did keto for a long time before that, so my glucose has been pretty stable for some time. I have also been doing 1 or 2 meals a day for 2 years or so, so again... pretty adjusted to fasting and close to zero carbs. Great work on your 72hrs, and thanks for taking time to comment, I really do appreciate it!

I am doing this challenge right now. I fully fasted for 48 hours before doing it. Today is my first day of nothing but sardines. I am using King Oscar brand. I love sardines. I weighed 8 pounds less than 3 days ago. I have eaten 5 cans today. I am only drinking black tea, black coffee or water. My water intake during the fasting days and today has been way more than normal. Even though I really like sardines, I gotta say nothing but sardines is as difficult as the pure fasting. Hot sauce, black pepper and salt does help. After these 3 days I will jump into a full rigid keto diet. I was on keto before this except I also had been cheating eating graham crackers, figs, prunes and the Quest "keto" cookies and snacks. So I am doing this to kick myself back in gear for keto. Over time with cheating, my joints were having inflammation and I overall just felt bloated. Hopefully I can jump start this and not give into the sweets because on keto I definitely feel better.

Thanks for taking time to share your story! I know exactly what you're talking about when it comes to your previous experience on Keto. I had lost over 50lbs and then completely came off the rails and gained back 35lbs. Now do stay on track, I just never eat any processed foods (even if they say keto). The only exception is holidays or rare special occasions. Otherwise I just NEVER cheat. Otherwise, it's just to hard for me. And it does get easier, I don't get those cravings anymore, and we do make keto ice cream, but it is sweet, but it does trigger some cravings in some people. Let me know how you fast goes, I'd love to hear.

FYI you can change sardines for mackerel on the challenge. Mackerel is higher in fat and omega 3's. I do love sardines ( pilchards) as a fish lover. ( I'm in England) and herrings can be used also on this. I used to eat a lot of rollmops and herrings in yogurt and dill, from lidls 🙂 Sardine fast does work and used it a few times 👍

Sir, you are a hero regardless, for eating Chicken of the Sea Sardines in water. I did a 3 day sardine fast this week using Season Brand in EVOO but I drain all of the oil. I am in Ketosis hard and just switched Carnivore diet. Dropped 9 lbs. this week. (Most of that was water weight). I am thirsty all day with slight elevated pulse. You should try this fast again with better sardines in Olive Oil. Water sardines get old really quick.

Congratulations on you wight loss! Electrolytes are super important. We and my wife drink water all day now, plus electrolyte drinks (we make our own). I did drain the water and put mustard on my sardines, but in olive oil would have been better, as it would have given me some extra fat as well. Thanks for taking time to comment and keep up the great work!

I’m completely distrustful of olive oil. Maybe it’s real olive oil with Season brand, which has a good reputation. Adulteration of olive oil with cheap neutral vegetable oils is common, and then there’s olive oil extracted with solvents like hexane from the pulp left over from pressing, which is at least real olive oil (known as pomace oil). Sardines in water aren’t too pleasant, true.
@BreakingThin
@BreakingThin Жыл бұрын
@@markiangooley I’m with on that. The safest way, if you want olive oil is to get sardines in water and then add extra-virgin olive oil, that you’re confident really is olive oil. Of course if you’ve cut out all the seed, oils and stuff like that from your diet and you add a can of sardines in once, or twice a week, it may not be the end of the world to have them in olive oil from the can but it’s good to at least be aware there’s a good chance the term olive oil is used loosely. 😀

I did this challenge last week - after 3 days, since I felt great and liked sardines, I did another 3-day, 144 hour sardine fast. This week I plan to do a 3-day Sockeye Salmon fast, with perhaps a can of Mackerel or Sardines in there. These fasts help train me to avoid stress eating, and only it when I’m truely hungry, which can lead to OMAD fasting.

I am doing the challenge. I have actually extended it for one more day. I do not have a ketone tester so just checking my weight. I have lost as of today, the begging of the fourth day, 8 pounds! My fasting blood sugar is still high but has come down and during the day it is much lower. I still love sardines, and have averaged about 6 cans a day. I only drink tea sweetened with Stevia and water. My eyes for some reason were really puffy the first two mornings but today they are back to normal. I think this is a wonderful way to kick off a healthier way of eating. I havent thought about food at all, just ate a can when I was hungry. I wish that I had a way to test my ketones but I dont think that I am really in ketosis heavily, I dont have a white tongue. But if weight loss is an indicator then that is ok with me. I think that I will do this once a month. I plan to keep my carbs to 40 or less and I am really looking forward to having a pile of greens tomorrow though!

Started the challenge today, as an alternative to considering something like Ozempic (my friend back home is doing). I have always eaten right but I have to assume too much, and I haven’t always exercised, but I have started up again. So not feeling like eating mimics what Ozempic does to a person. Planning to do some protein shakes with psyllium husk fiber when the challenge is over, again to mimic Ozempic (fiber slows stomach emptying and contributes to feeling full).

I bought lots of sardines to do the challenge. I haven’t been able to. So there they sit. Like you I like them but don’t love them. I figure I will never want to eat them again. However, after watching this video I think I might do something a little different. I’m going to try once every two to three weeks doing one day of sardines. I haven't taken the challenge. After watching some of the videos I did stock up on sardines and have had a couple of sardine lunches, and did see some blood sugar improvements after them. I like sardines well enough with mustard. I'm afraid if I eat nothing but sardines for 72 hours, I might not ever want to look at a can of sardines again. Even among the sardines I've stocked up on, I really liked one variety, and haven't been crazy about the others. Speaking of that, beware of Chicken of the Sea. I bought a few cans of that brand. I couldn't find an ingredient list on the cans. I assumed the ingredients would be relatively clean. But, online sources say the variety I bought, lightly smoked in oil, contains soybean oil.

I can tell you, I haven't eaten any sardines since I did this. Which is not ideal, they really are good for you, but I'm finally at a place where I think I'll add back in a can or 2 a week. I try to always buy mine in water, and then add mustard to them, or sometimes hot sauce. Seed oils (including soy) are just BAD, and I try to avoid them as much as I possibly can. Even things in Olive oil, unless it specifically states Extra Virgin often now have some mix of seed oils in them, so I just try to avoid it.

@@BreakingThin one more question, since you measure 1 hour after you wake up, does that mean you wait to have your morning coffee or does it matter? I drink my coffee upon waking up so I don't know if that will make a material difference in my gluocose reading. Thoughts?
@BreakingThin
@BreakingThin Жыл бұрын
I also drink coffee with heavy, whipping cream before I do my first testing. When I first started testing, I would do it immediately after I woke up but your glucose is normally slightly higher when you first wake up and I’ve seen a number of suggestions to do it one hour after you get up. I think the most important thing is to consistently test it at the same time, whether you do it first thing in the morning one hour after you wake up either way it’s probably fine My morning routine is pretty set so I test at one hour after I get up. I always drink coffee first and at least I have numbers that are directly comparable. If you have any other questions, just let me know. I’m more than happy to help in anyway, I can.
