Man. Dragon Prince. I remember when you were so hype man. I remember those days. Look how they massacred my boy. Like, is there many examples of so thoroughly killing the hype of a show in progress as this one? Seriously, I just don't understand it. They were on top of the world. And it all feels like it is slowly slipping away. More within.

Alot of Hype died when they broke up Callum and Rayla OFF SCREEN just so they would spend the next season trying to get them back together all over again. Like, maybe if we saw their relationship facing problems in the show proper it wouldnt be as bad, but having the break up happen in a comic that 90% of the fanbase isnt going to read was unacceptable (the fact that the reason for the break up was straight up stupid did not help). I legit would want to sit down with the the writters and ask them why.

It doesn’t really surprise me that new writers dropped the ball. I’ve joined a indie developer group for a game jam as basically an editor. It’s crazy because ppl can come up with interesting concepts that could be great but then when you try to steer them into using that concept they themselves literally don’t want to and they basically refuse to. For example, in the game I’m working on with a team, the MC is a vampire and is meeting her former male vampire lover after 90 years of being apart (due to being kidnapped and locked in a dungeon). The female MC’s endgame love interest in the story we’re writing however is going to be a human male detective who doesn’t trust vampires. Which obviously that is a bit of a tough thing to write, can go wrong so easily and be unconvincing. Well, as expected it so far is pretty unconvincing the relationship between the human detective and the female MC vampire. They’re constantly distrusting each other. Constantly fighting. Because this is for a game jam and we really have limited time to develop this I suggested we use the former lover vampire-who they already planned to be introduced as a key character in solving the case-as a method to bring the two protagonists together. Because right now honestly I don’t see the writers coming up with anything, literally anything, to bring the human detective and vampire female MC together. They’re stuck on the human detective as a “straight and narrow rules following character and would never waver if someone is suspected of a crime-even if he gradually is thinking more and more that they’re innocent” but also they’re determined that the female vampire MC is a “don’t trust humans and don’t listen to anyone and I go my own way” character. They won’t bend at all on either character. Originally I tried to get them to bend slightly. To suggest that the human detective starts to realize that the female vampire is innocent of the crime (which is true-that is the story) and as he starts feeling more and more that she’s innocent and that she is being framed that he starts having romantic feelings. And starts to understand her. But man, that was vetoed to kingdom come. Essentially I found out the writers say the male human detective would never ever ever ever fall in love with anyone who isn’t 100% proven innocent. Even if he hides his feelings. Basically it’s the “this character would never be conflicted internally.” So, then I tried with the female vampire MC, saying well maybe the MC is conflicted and has self reflection about vampires. And again the writers were adamant that “no, this character would never ever be conflicted either.” So, now I’m like, okay fine. Neither character would ever be internally conflicted about their own actions or beliefs. So, how about the female MC gets conflicted about someone else-her former vampire lover. And that then brings the human detective (who doesn’t trust vampires) and the female vampire together. But, you guessed it, “no, the female vampire MC would never ever ever be conflicted about this former vampire lover.” I’m just here now. I got in too deep to back out now. It’s my first time ever working on an indie game. And I do want to gain at least the experience. But, I’m definitely sitting here kind of pulling my hair out. It’s so frustrating because the story honestly is interesting. And it really could be good I think. Has potential. And I don’t understand it at all. This isn’t one writer. We’re talking 4 writers and then I would say there’s me (supposed to be just an editor) and 1 other 5th writer who are on the same page. All 4 writers are all adamant that essentially the characters can’t possibly have internal conflict. Can’t have self reflection. And that’s basically what it is. The 4 writers refuse to have any of the characters self reflect. Yet, they want the characters to be at odds with each other too. AND they want the characters to get romantically together too. It’s just like…what the heck is in the water today. These 4 writers are literally from around the world. One from Italy, USA, etc. They’re just a bit younger than me-but we’re talking adults. I’ve tried to get them to explain why the characters won’t self reflect but you guessed it, radio silence. Ignored.

About season 6 being finished, Aaron ehasz said in a interview 8 months ago that season 6 was almost finished, meaning it has to be done now. It’s frustrating that we can’t it but we can’t blame the creators because they said themselves that it’s up to Netflix on when they release the season

A huge issue in stories that, possibly due to weird social norms and storytelling, couples are prevented from happening because they are seen as an ‘end’. Once a couple is established, that’s it! No more storytelling for them! And it’s weird because having characters get together is not an ‘end’ for their characters. They can still grow and develop and interact with others, but so many stories just have it hardwired in that couples = endings

I think it’s more along the lines of ppl liking certain types of romance. And lack of experience in writing too. And it can obviously get wild. Right now I’m on an indie game jam as an editor and the writers are refusing to essentially have ANY of the characters have even a single moment of self reflection. To have even a hint of internal conflict. And the whole premise of the story is a human detective who doesn’t trust vampires supposedly getting into a romantic relationship with a female vampire who of course doesn’t trust humans. Going in I was like, okay, interesting concept. And now weeks later as we’re trying to get the plot and outline done, I’m like….okay, so these two characters disagree on everything and yet you want them together and yet neither can ever doubt their actions or beliefs or anything whatsoever. Both characters will always believe they’re 100% right all the time with their completely opposite worldviews? 4 writers on team: Yes. Me, an editor, and 1 writer: ….

Your insight is refreshing but I think people are invested in relationships because it is a form of growth for people than any other form of things.In this case it could be any kind of human bond.

I'm just baffled that they didn't at least give a recap of the book. I didn't even know it existed until the next season already came out. Had there been like some sort of advertising at the time, i would have happily picked it up between seasons. Now that it's already out, it feels like 'Do I really need to learn how Rayla got herself a pokémon, or can I put this money towards a different thing', and invariably, I put it towards another thing. Because I already know how it ends. Paradoxically, they could have also waited longer to release the book, made it longer and more exciting, and pitched it after the show was finished so people would want more.

Hi, my grandparents are deaf and ASL has been a second language in my family. My family loves this show. Amaya is awesome! Our only notes though is that it’s a bit obvious at some parts that the script was written by a hearing person instead of a deaf person. Like, they wrote the script first and then asked interpreters how they would sign Amaya’s dialogue. For example, Gren interprets Amaya’s signs with hearing people lingo than what she is exactly saying. Of course, Gren could be putting a bit of his own casual interpretation on her words, but it’s still his job to say exactly what she is saying. “The food here is… weapons grade.” v.s. What she signed was, “the food is… hard like/same as a sword.” The words “weapons grade” would not enter my mind to interpret it that way if I was interpreting for Amaya in real life. I’d say, “the food is as hard as a sword” or something close to that. But I can understand Amaya and Gren would have their own army lingo. Where it was really obvious for my family was when Gren interpreted Amaya asking Corvus to “track” them. There is no ASL sign for “track”. She signs “follow”, (because that’s the closest synonym) but Gren said “track.” I get that is what she’s asking Corvus to do, but ‘to track’ seems so specific of a task for Gren to throw that word out. Again, possible army lingo. Gren is also super fast at interpreting! Holy cow! She doesn’t even finish a sentence before he starts interpreting for her! Wish I had his skills! 😅 Again, love Amaya! ❤ She opened a lot of doors for a Deaf character. It’s clear in the first three seasons that a lot of care went into thinking about how she would have to interact with the world. For example, she has to make people look at her, or she turns around when a light turns on, etc. But I was really disappointed when that care started to be left behind in the later seasons. Characters started acting as though Amaya could lip read everything. Lip reading perfectly is a myth! It is very difficult to do! Even with context, only 30% of a conversation can be undersood! And characters start to forget to look at Amaya when speaking, or rely solely on Gren to interpret for many people at once. I’m still mad that Callum forgets to even look at his aunt when talking, or to sign for himself to talk to her. I wanted to scream, “YOU KNOW ASL! WHY AREN’T YOU TALKING TO YOUR AUNT! INCLUDE HER!!” But I hope the care gets put back in new seasons. Sorry for the long rant, just hope people can be aware of these myths around Deaf people. Thanks for the update video, bye!

I noticed this too! That scene in the tent when Callum was telling them about Aaravos, he kept walking back and forth like how is Amaya supposed to be reading his lips if she can't even see them? Then you have Gren in the background who's just standing there not even signing it to her but I'm supposed to believe that Amaya somehow got all that. It is especially frustrating when Callum avoids signing to his aunt for some reason (especially when Gren's there to interpret but like why doesn't he just sign it himself) considering it was established that he does know ASL. I really do hope they start being more attentive in the upcoming seasons.

Such a damn shame, 'cause the first 3 seasons were SO GOOD. Now 2 seasons into this new arc and barely anything major happened. And that's excluding the large gap between seasons as you mentioned.

I think Netflix is delaying the release date because of two reasons. The first is the alleged darker tone of season 6. At wodnercon, the crew decided to screen the full episode one, with a warning that children shouldn’t attend without a parent. I’ve even heard rumors that the season will be rated TV-14, same as Arcane. So maybe Netflix isn’t sure how to market this season since they don’t want it ending up on their Netflix Kids where parents think it’s okay for their kids to watch it alone. Maybe they could put a disclaimer at the beginning of the season telling kids not to watch it alone. Or they could release it on a separate tab to make sure it doesn’t end up on the kids app. Netflix did do that with season 2 of masters of the universe, with them being labeled Revolution and Revelation and having their own separate tabs despite being the same show. The second reason is that this is a reaction to the writers and actors strikes shutting down Hollywood last year. We all know that the strikes caused production on a lot of shows and movies to be delayed. And while this didn’t affect production on season 6, (since the Dragon Prince is a Canadian show, and the script and recording for season 6 was likely already finished by the time of the strikes) it did delay production on other Netflix shows. So Netflix might want to delay the release date to spread out their content since they might not have as much coming out right now. The second one feels the most likely to me. Because Amazon prime did something similar with their originals. Hazbin Hotel was originally supposed to be released in Summer 2023, but got pushed back to January 2024 just so that Amazon would have something new to premiere in 2024. It’s also likely why their was that three month gap during invincible season 2.

We are talking about Netflix, the platform what cancelled everything good and orders second and third seasons of all the boring series... Yes I'm still bitter about some series... Anyway I really hate they broke up Rayla and Callum, specially because its off screen. You are forced to read the book to know about what happend. But its not in my country (for I know) and not in my language. I was able to read it before the season came out, but still enough people won't be so lucky or don't even know about it. Its a bad move from them to do it. Its nice to have side stories in books and so on, but make sure it are side stories. So you won't miss anything. Its so suddenly that they arent dating anymore and Callum is a little mad about it. He looks like a jerk even though he has all right to be angry about it because of how it went. I mean REALLY RAYLA, HIS BIRTHDAY?! And the show is playing it off like Callum is the bad guy and Rayla the victim. Than the new seasons aren't even living up to the hype it once was. Sorry but the last season, I thought it was kinda boring. Specially next to the previous seasons. Season 3 would be the perfect serie final. All storylines were done except a few (like Rayla her familie) but those werent too important and could be done in a book (Better than the real book) Sometimes more isn't always better. I hope that the next seasons will bring back the hype and are worthy of the Dragon Prince. I love the show.

I didn't realize how bad the lighting was in season 4. Seasons 1, 2, and 3 were fine as it is. But it's like someone accidentally left the brightness on %100. They seem to fix it in season 5, but it's weird to notice how rough the development of this show went through.

I am still interested in the show, but for the wrong reasons. It may sound strange, but you can learn a lot about storytelling if you ask yourself why parts of the show dont work. I mean for what should we be hyped for season 6? The heroes have won in season 5 and they have now Aaravos prison in possession. The villain group is in the same spot like they were at the start of season 4. The oh so dangerous Karim that has lost every battle and we should still take him seriously? Aaravos himself the mystery box who is nearly absent? A worse Rayllum? Another Callum dark magic temptation arc that is a worse version of the s2 one? The dragon prince has a troubled production and it seems that they lost much of original team. I mean they have a new director that was involved in infamous movies like dragonball evolution. I don't expect that this show will end on a high note.

Sounds like you have a lot to learn about storytelling, because you ask all these questions without answering them. The heroes have won in Season 5? That means they have to lose in Season 6. Karim has lost? But now he has an army and Kim’Dael at his disposal. If you can’t see how Rayllum has matured as a couple, then you must be like 12 years old. And it’s not “another” Callum dark magic temptation arc, it’s the same one carrying over from Arc 1. He swore he’d never do it again, yet he did it. So now where does he go from here? That’s what leaves the audience curious. If you don’t care, then you don’t give a shit about character arcs or progression. It’s called a story building on itself. Naturally progressing. I don’t know what stories you consume, but this is all basic. This is what hypes people up.

At this point, I’m solely watching to find out what happens with Ruthari and if Runaan escapes. I haven’t even really gotten to care about Rayla’s parents because we get no other scenes of them other than that snippet in season three. Since then, they’ve only been mentioned when it’s convenient.

I'm more upset about what they've done with Aaravos tbh. Don't get me wrong, I like all the characters, but I lived for seeing Aaravos, and especially the dynamic he had with Viren. Both were interesting villains, but Aaravos had that mysterious 'What does he actually want?' vibe to him. He was also basically a main character, and now he just makes cameo appearances. Seriously who thought that was a good idea? We need that intimidation factor, and Claudia just doesn't really cut it. Like I enjoy the fact that she has become a bad guy, it is certainly interesting, but I just feel like she doesn't have the same presence that Viren and especially Aaravos did. Claudia works much better as a side character than as a main villain. If anything, I'm more interested in how Terry is going to change. Is he going to put his foot down? Is he going to become evil himself? Who knows.

I was literally vibing with the first episode, and then as soon as they revealed that Rayla and Callum had broken up off screen I stopped watching. I was so annoyed and just couldn’t get back into it even though I was fine with other things. I kept telling myself I’ll go back and watch it someday but now it’s been like 3 years 😅

The reason the first three seasons aired so close to each other was because they were made back to back. People don’t realize this, but Netflix originally picked up this show in 2015, even though it was announced to the public in 2018. Meaning it took three years to make the show. And since the the rest of the saga wasn’t picked up until 2020, they spent two years writing and animating the shows, which is typically how long it takes to make a season of an animated show. Look how long it took to make Invincible season 2. If Netflix had hypothetically picked up the entire 7 seasons, the hiatus might not have been so long.

I honestly forgot about this show for the most part, I saw the trailer for season 6 when it came out and I’ve seen all the seasons but I don’t really care about it anymore. It was my favorite show during the first 3 seasons but after the 3 year hiatus and the mediocre newer seasons I just don’t care about it. I will probably try rewatching it to see the earlier stuff and I will watch the new seasons but my hype for this series is mostly gone.

Back when that one season "suddenly" appeared after their 3 year hiatus (suddenly because I didn't even know a release date before)... back then, I didn't even have a Netflix subscription anymore. Because Netflix sucked ass for long time, probably mostly due to Covid, because I quickly got the feeling I've seen everything already and nothing new of interest came up for a WHILE. I think I didn't use Netflix for at least 2 years. Then Dragon Prince dropped and I was intrigued. However, I think it got released in a November? Because I thought nah, I'll wait for around Christmas when I actually have time to netflix & chill through several shows that got new seasons in the meantime. But I'm pretty sure I waited till January or something to get a new subscription, I don't remember why. Anyway, you see, I used to be very hyped for this show when it started. But when that season showed up, the passion had already turned lukewarm. When the season actually sucked I was so disappointed that I cancelled my subscription again and didn't return until about a year later. I've been so disappointed. I'm caught up now, and the latest season was a little better, but not enough to revive the fandom, I'm afraid.

The show ended with season 3, it just did. Viren died when he was pushed off a cloud height mountain. Claudia should have teamed up With Aaravos in revenge for an elf killing her father, NOT KISSING AND MINGLING WITH ONE… WTF?? Seasons 4 opened to Soren Flossing AND Rayla…. Leaving callum…. In the middle of the night…on his birthday… with no note or reason… and didn’t come back… who the fuk wrote this sh1t? And that is how season 4 OPENED, by the gods just end the poor shows suffering 😢

The reason for the delay is, most likely, the jump in maturity rating. The show won't be on Netflix Kids anymore, which was probably where there main audience was. To be honest, i think it's a mistake for the creators to write such tonal whiplash.

I never really got into the fandom, especially since I started seeing this back when 4th season came out... And holy molly, I didn't expected the community to be SO upset about literally everything, to the point I don't I agree with the majority. People say 4th and 5th seasons were 'not that special', and I see it the other way around, the earlier seasons felt slower and difficult to watch until I reached season 3. And tbh, 4th and 5th were my favorite despite Rayllum's break up (come on guys, they're barely teenagers and teenagers always mess up things, did you really expect them to marry and live happily ever after at 14-15?)

I'm still really looking forward to season 6, but I'll admit I agree things haven't been the same since season 3. The first three seasons weren't perfect --- they had their issues, especially with pacing. But I think it was the characters and world-building that really helped the show rise above and make people forgive its pitfalls. Season 4 was a huge misstep in that regard, imo. I was so excited to find out where these characters were at after such a long hiatus. But then the creators just... didn't do anything exciting with them. Ezran had nothing interesting to do, Callum gave Rayla the silent treatment almost the entire time, Rayla returned conveniently after a two-year absence just before the start of a new adventure with absolutely nothing to show for her travels, and Soren got hardly any juicy character drama following the revelation of his father's resurrection. There were SOOO many missed opportunities, and the overall events of season 4 felt like they could have been accomplished in 4 or 5 episodes rather than in 9. Season 5 was definitely better (it at least had some more interesting character work going on), but after sitting on it for a while, I do feel like it still meandered too much. Everyone letting Ezran put their entire mission at risk to go on a side-adventure and rescue the glowtoads felt incredibly contrived and unnecessary. And I've continually been disappointed by the lack of focus on the main plot surrounding Aaravos and getting worried that the last two seasons will feel rushed and underdeveloped the way that season 3 did. Like, this show isn't The Last Airbender. There isn't nearly as much room in these seasons for quirky side quests. I think if the creators really want the show to be more mature now that the main group is older, they need to actually commit to that and let the show be serious. Not saying that there's no space for humor, but constantly undercutting emotional moments with jokes and having the characters make nonsensical choices for laughs isn't it, in my opinion.

Those first two seasons felt like it was animated on 3s or 4s, so the movement was really jerky, so it felt like they were sacrificing animation quality for the sake of modeling, effects, and speed of season release. They ended up improving that, but not enough to make it feel like “now it’s a perfect show.” Add to that the first fire seasons did feel like avatar, in that there was a feeling of “here’s where the show’s going, let’s see how the characters work through it” but now it feels like “we said it was going to take 7 seasons, but now that I think of it, I don’t think we have enough to fill that time. Let’s just stretch what we got.”

You can thank Netflix’s Avatar the Last Airbender for the Season 6 delay. I’m not even kidding, that’s the reason. Someone who went to Wondercon tweeted that Aaron Ehasz said S6 was supposed to come out back in November, but Netflix pushed back. They basically forgot about all their other properties so they could promote that PoS live action ATLA (I have no love for the thing, haters gonna hate.) Which is ironic because it was also confirmed at Wondercon that Netflix greenlit Dragon Prince in the first place because they wanted their own Avatar. Then they turned around and made that crappy live action series? What a slap in the face. Y’all can be “meh” all you want, but The Dragon Prince is literally the only reason I still have a Netflix subscription.

i am glad to see the show become more darker and mature by the sound of it i dont think callum and rayla is back together in season 6 but i hope they will be over the couse of the season one of my least favorite thing about the show is terry cant stand that guy why would claudia be with an elf i think upto season 2 i was on the claudia callum ship do i want to see drama between them yes but it need to be done right i think it would have been interesting if callum or rayla had met someone else also what ever happend to the other kingdoms after thier kings was killed and i think the new avatar series have something to do with the release date of season 6 dont think netflix wanted 2 seasons released back to back

A couple thoughts: 1. On the Rayllum point I agree that breaking things off in a book was not the best way to handle things; however, I do like that they split them up. Rayla was not in a good head space at the end of season 3 having lost her whole family and home, getting a boyfriend wasn't going to compare. She needed to get away and relieve her built up anger and resentment and gain a more mature perspective. As someone who watched s3 when it came out, I too LOVED rayllum becoming canon, but looking back now I can only think about how truly young they were. I am really enjoying their relationship in 4-5 and looking forward to seeing it progress into a much healthier, permanent place. 2. The handling of TDP's marketing is utterly despicable. Netflix is awful at promoting ANY content that is not Stranger Things or created by some legendary film maker (ie Rebel Moon). According to Aaron Ehasz, Netflix has not given them a release date for season 6 as of March 31st. I think there are plenty of reasons why this could be, but the main one I think is the rating change. Season 6 will be going up in rating and will no longer be viewable on Netflix Kids. Assuming Netflix has an Adult and Kids releases schedule, Netflix has been having to find a location for TDP to go now that it is on the Adults schedule. I think Netflix is trying to find a place to put TDP that balances with and does not compete with other popular Adult medias. TDP s5 made it to Adults top ten list (peaked at #8) so it is possible they are expecting s6 to rank higher. 3. I hope that season 6 provides the true comeback for season 4's faults. Sometimes you have to push through the mud to get to the gold.

I honestly disagree that Rayla and Callum's romantic relationship is the biggest draw of the show. The biggest draw for me was the familial relationships, whether it be Callum and Ezran, Callum and Harrow, Soren and Claudia, Viren and his kids, Amaya and her nephews, Amaya and Sarai, Rayla and Runaan etc. I feel like the first season really established familial relationships as a driving force within the story and they really were what kept me tuned in. Honestly, Rayllum isn't even a draw at all for me personally. Don't get me wrong I adored their friendship in the first two seasons but the the execution of their romantic relationship...Now I'm not really against the idea of them as a couple or anything, it's just the way the relationship developed romantically left a lot to be desired in my opinion. Rayla almost confessing to Callum when he was out cold was the first sign of romance being a thing with these two and it felt very out of nowhere to me. We don't know when or what made Rayla start developing these feelings for him, just hey surprise she has them! Then they had Callum tell Rayla he was in love her when just a few episodes ago he wasn't even aware that he liked her like that. That moment just didn't feel believable or earned to me, I couldn't buy it. I do agree that breaking them up off screen was the worst thing about book 4 though. Not only are they the main characters so the fact that an event this significant in shaking up the status quo happened off screen is ridiculous, but it also just screwed up their whole dynamic. Now Callum is pissed at Rayla for leaving two years ago while Rayla is acting like everything's fine and that's just not an enjoyable dynamic to watch. Although the fact that I waited 3 years for Soren and Claudia to reunite only for them to give me that underwhelming interaction definitely upset me the most (they're my favorites), what they did with Rayllum is undoubtedly the worst decision in book 4. I will say though I did like Rayla and Callum bonding in book 5 so who knows, the show may make a Rayllum shipper out of me yet. Though, I still do think familial relationships is where the show shines the most.

anyone who didn't see rayla leaving coming (given the fact that she tries to go off on her own or actually does in almost every episode in s1-s3) just proves they were never actually paying attention to the characters' arcs and flaws tbh. like did it never occur to you that 1) characters are going to be stuck in cycles in the "stuck in cycles show" or 2) her negative patterns were just going to be fixed bc she was in a relationship. or why they'd want an arc about how rayla was willing to hurt him as they build up towards an arc about callum being possessed? jc

I’m in the minority but the Callum and Rayla breakup didn’t really ruin things for me. I think it could have been handled better(Like having an episode dedicated to it) but Rayla leaving to chase Viren makes sense for her character. I’m honestly enjoying seeing them come back together, both older and more mature but still dealing with their own issues. I do agree that the gap is making the show lose hype though. That’s not the fault of the creators though, but Netflix. I think season 6 could have been what really saves the show, but the longer the wait…Iunno. :/ I’m still excited though, I just hope we don’t have to wait too much longer.
