He was somewhat overshadowed by the then left-back Vic Akers who went on to manage Arsenal Ladies as well as being kit man for the Gunners in the Premier League, I don't understand how you include Bobby Robson in his development, as the one who discovered him was Harry Haslam, for whom he was effectively his meal ticket as the two of them went from Tonbridge to Fulham and Luton as player and manager respectively, during which time he was converted to being a striker, having never played in that position for Tonbridge. I believe he grew up in nearby Edenbridge, where his brothers played for the local club
