The Dream Academy were Nick Laird Clowes, Gilbert Gabriel and Kate St. John. Their debut single, "Life in a Northern Town" became a worldwide classic hit. Subsequent singles, included The Love Parade, Indian Summer, Love, and 12/8 Angel.
Listen to Nick's latest song for free ("Mayday"). It was co-written in May 2009 with David Gilmour of Pink Floyd and was written for a Greenpeace documentary by Nick Broomfield about the Kingsnorth protesters. nicklairdclowes.com/

Kind of an underrated band. They took a really different musical direction from the start where they combined great musicianship, orchestral instrumentation, synths, and bold choices that are all worthy of rediscovering. Truly ahead of their time , by decades.

Check out their new comprehensive box set that was just released, called "Religion, Revolution, and Railways." The unreleased song, "House of Heartbreak", is quite an amazing 8-minute epic journey. This truly deserves a wider release. It has echos of their first album. Love Kate's backing vocals and the whole ambiance of this.

...(cont.) to mid '80s, bands like R.E.M., the Police and U2 and 10,000 Maniacs were all at their dizzyingly creative peaks, creating sounds that had never been heard before, while bands like the Dream Academy, Lone Justice and Suzanne Vega were all shaking things up creatively, and all coming out with beautiful things. So whether or not the sounds were similar, I think the '80s were the most creative musical period since the '60s.

JJ Jackson was the best interviewer of all the MTV VJs (see his interview with PiL's John Lydon and Keith Levene as well - amazing!). I love that Nick references Love's "Forever Changes" as a big influence to merge Classical into their music - one of my Top 10 favorite albums of all-time. Kate was in a band called The Ravishing Beauties with the ethereally beautiful pianist/vocalist Virginia Astley. Nick and Gilbert's only album when they were The Act was also very Poptastic. So much talent in this interview!

I remember buying their first album on vinyl at the local record shop. I was already in love with Nick Laird-Clowes' voice, then I saw his boyish face and fell in love even more. Later, the song "Hampstead Girl" sealed the deal for me. Great memories!

I feel sooooo sentimental now. I'm 37 and miss MTV when it was how it was meant to be. I never saw this interview until now, -I am sad that they only had one solid hit because they seem(ed) so potent and sprite and "in it" so to speak. Very real (and quite innovative) musicians, indeed!!!

Sadly Nick Drake took his own life at 26 years old on the 25th Nov 1974. His song "River Man" was the second listed song from his debut 1969 album "Five Leaves Left". In 2004 the song was remastered and released as a 7" vinyl and as enhanced CD single including a video to the song by Tim Pope.

@@earinsound I see many artists out there who do great things I think it's what people tend to do... they say "things were better back then" Ummm.... nope. The Knife, MGMT, BIllie Eilish, Neon Indian - just a few names of artists who have huge followings and do things there own way... and there are many others. Maybe for the top top artists... but even then, I couldn't say unless i took a look and really researched to find out which ones write their own material and which ones dont Plus, there have been record company - created bands since the dawn of time.... and there have also been many bands who succeeded who have control over their material... maybe even moreso now

It was September 1985, I remember school had just started. I was in a record shop in the mall and the clerk put the Dream Academy record on; I bought it right there! Yes, Kate St. John is sweetly beautiful, not in the oversexed trashy way women in pop music often look. She also had the most interesting career working in the '90s with Roger Eno and Bill Nelson; she also had a solo album on All Saints.

Aside from the question of whether their music "sounded like" the music of the '60s, is the creativity factor. The greatest thing about the '60s (IMO) was the unlimited creativity of the greatest '60s bands (whether the Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, the Byrds, The Dead, the Zombies, folk acts like Dylan, Baez and Tim Hardin, etc.). They were all doing different things, but they were all pushing the creative limits and trying to things that were beautiful and unique. During the early...
