Tool is such an awesome band! My husband is a drummer playing for over 35 years. About 8 years ago he was in a band that did a Battle of the Bands at one of the casinos in Atlantic City. They played the Tool song 46 and 2 in their set. Afterwards the singer was in the bathroom and heard a guy from one of the other bands say, man forget it! Did you hear that band play Tool!

Danny has an extensive background in Jazz drumming, so he's very familiar with odd time signatures. The term to remember with Tool and Danny is "syncopated poyrhythms." It basically means several rhythms played at once while accenting offbeats. This is why people call Danny "The Octopus," because octopi (octopusses, octopoids. They're all correct) have a "brain" in each of their arms that allow them to act independently. Danny definitely fits that description!

I could watch this video a million times and still not be tired of it. My dad was a drummer (for 50+ years). Everything about the way Danny plays reminds me of my dad so much. His build, those arms and those big hands, the way he lifts his chin, the way he hits the drums and the cymbals, those thick sticks, everything. It's the closest I can get to seeing my dad play again, which makes this video even more special to me.

When it comes to Tools song timing...it's exactly like fine art. You can't look at one thing too closely...you need to step back and look at the art as a whole. Dannys drumming is not always determining the timing...step back amd listen to the other instriments as well because they are adding to the beat feel. That's how poly rhythms work. Tool tends to create long phrases in their music...which is, they start off playing a section of music and its repeating the beginning of that section 16 bars later. Most bands repeat phases evey measure or every other measure. Tool is so good with this which makes their music unique and different from all other bands. Thank you for another great reation Molly Boyyeeee!!

1) Get a good quality electronic drumkit - they're cheap, take up less room, you can put a whole bunch of sounds into them, you can record onto your computer, and best of all you can listen with headphones, and play along with your favourite songs. 2) Don't give up guitar, play that as well. And also get a bass. Learn all three at the same time and you will find they all complement each other. After 25 years of playing guitar to a pretty high level, I recently started playing bass - and I found it so easy to pick up, so fun to play and it also improved my guitar playing. I'm 100% self-taught - I also learned keyboard and some drums. And this was in an era when there was no youtube, almost no tutorials and it was impossible for me to get lessons. So these days you can become proficient in all these instruments within a year or two if you practice for a couple of hours every day. If you start now, by the time you're 30 you can be playing multiple instruments at a high level without ever paying for a lesson. And you have 50,000 of us who can recommend which instruments to buy on a budget.

Even playing along with a guitar feels jarring their complex time signatures you have to compensate for, embrace your desire to swing on the spiral 💯

Now imagine a 15 song set list with three encores, think of how many actual hit there are, to remember every rim shot... mind blowing.... drummers are BEAST! Eloy Casagrande now with Slipknot, and El Estepario Siberiano with his band The Cost doing a song with Serj Tankian. It will be a BOLLOCKS year for Metal!

uhhh not sure if you have ever been to a Tool show but ive never seen or heard of them doing an Encore, they have an intermission then finish the set, allowing recording on last song =)

Man, I love drum shot videos. Danny is a beast. His drumming is so good you almost take it for granted in a Tool song.

It's not just that his hands and feet are doing different things. It's that each hand and each foot is doing something different, like holding four independent rythms at once. He's really incredible.

Love all you're reactions, ESPECIALLY TOOL. And you're not stupid at all man, Tools time signatures are very different and they like to swith it during their songs. Its hard to move your head to it.

The middle section of this is the part that completely blows me away. Danny is playing “poly rhythms” where each limb is playing a different rhythm. That sounds chaotic but he somehow weaves them all together in a beautiful coherent whole. No idea how he does that.
