You know what’s odd that never once came up? Geordi is a walking lie detector. In an early episode it was said that his visor could be used to detect fluctuations in skin temperature to discern a lie. (I may have misremember the ‘science’ there but it was said that he could definitively do this)
@BigTomInTheBasement

He probably has the technological ability but discerning a lie would require very sophisticated software that could be subverted. Like when emperor georgiou wrecked the future lie detector AIs by blinking in a pattern.

@@WilliamBrinkley45 The guy with Satie is also a… betazoid? I can’t recall the race name, so the same abilities are in effect, so she’d just be extra window dressing. Not to mention, not telling the truth isn’t an indicator of guilt, which is part of the point of this episode.

One thing I noticed was that, the moment Picard called her out for exactly what you point out, the admiral pivots. She doesn't try to defend her argument in any way and instead lashes out at Picard and calls his loyalty into question. When Worf, one of her supporters up to this point, defends Picard, she pivots again and calls out Worf as well. Once again, not defending her argument but simply changing the subject. This is a classic mark of someone who sees that their argument has no ground to stand on but cannot, for whatever reason, back down from their stance.

This episode demonstrates two of Picard's most well-known strategies: Strategy A) The Inspiring Speech, which we are all familiar with. Strategy B) let anyone on the ship go anywhere they damn well please without even an ounce of proper security stationed ANYWHERE inside the vessel. Strategy B, of course, also goes by the famous name of "The Picard Maneuver." As Khan Noonian Singh once mockingly said, "Of course! We are all one big happy fleet."

25 years later and Star Trek is more concerned with pushing ideology, and ideas that attack and berate the values and lessons of earlier Trek. Gone are good stories, good characters, and ethical challenges that make us ask ourselves what we believe and hold true. The Mandolorian proved that Star Wars can finds it's way back to great storytelling. It's my hope that someone at some point is given the opportunity to return Star Trek to what it once was, for those of us who love and miss Real Trek. Thank you for your great analysis.

The only thing I can think of for way so many things are so under defended in ST is that irl they didn’t have the budget to include so many models in scenes not to mention all the actors they would have to add in. DS9 even more so because they would be basically required to be recurring characters by nature of the station doesn’t move nor stop needing the fleet. In universe it could be simply the nature of starfleet at this point they are a fleet of explorers and science vessels, they must all be busy and the two they sent were all they could spare because all the other ships are out doing science or on the brink of federation space exploring

Yeah, it’s you looking a little much into it. Troi and Riker had a legitimate reason to suspect the Klingon had stolen engineering files because he accessed a computer deep in the lower decks of the ship without authorization and then denied it. They preserved his rights. When he wouldn’t answer anymore questions the interrogation ended. Even when Worf discovered the specific manner the Klingon used in smuggling the data, all they did was send him back to the Klingon Empire. Tarses is a different story. Of course Picard protected one of his own. Picard eventually realized Satee was pursuing her own zealous agenda against one his crewmen. She said the hatch on the engine was weakened by a corrosive chemical available to Tarses. That wasn’t true and she knew it.

Yaknow i watched this episode recently, and i had the same issue with no gaurds posted. I mean what the hell? We have a possible saboteur aboard fellas! But then you could say they didn't post any because it would alert them. But then why the investegation anyway? At least, why in the way they did it? They'd be alerting them anyway with the investigation. Yeah this entire proceeding doesn't make much logical sense. I'll chock that up to the writers going, "Hey guys! Let's have a witch hunt trial!" "Aw yeah that'd be cool!" "How do we set it up though?" "Pssssh setup doesn't matter! It's the messsagggeeee bro, tha meeeessssaaaggeeeeee!" "Oh, okay." Lol

This is my favourite TNG episode. You're wrong about Sati not being a bad person. (Of course, this isn't in a sense that her personality is somehow evil or completely devoid of good qualities). But people like her end up ruining everything they touch, whether this is by intention or not - is irrelevant, what matters is the outcome. In our days, in Britain and North America these "Karens" usually become English teachers in High Schools, but even in this mundane and innocuous occupation they manage to be vindictive, suspicious and cruel, trying to make personal enemies out of students they don't like for one reason or another, picking on them for one made up reason or another and giving them low grades unfairly. Extremely controlling, devoid of sense of humour, and continually passive aggressive, pretending to be "victimised" throughout their entire lives to get what they want and to manipulate others. Luckily, they can be unhinged and show their true colours, which is exactly what Picard managed to do. The episode is only partially realistic, generally people like her end up getting what they want when in position of power, and I strongly suspect that it was Gene Roddenberry's vision of "enlightened future society" - the canon which made this episode have a favourable end.

Tarsas is frightened because he's not Vulcan, he's Romulan. But when you're frightened (or nervous about something in your past) then that can affect present results. Case in point, I once tried marijuana at University, got a fit of the giggles and that was it. However, about 6 years later I had to undergo a Lie Detector test when I interviewed for a job with an overseas firm. I failed the interview because I (supposedly) lied about using drugs. As I said, I only smoked pot once but the fear affected the test and they misread the fear. As they do with Tarsas, and because Satie wants or believes that someone is guilty, someone is going to be found guilty. Bring forth the scapegoat.

Way I see it, Tarsis should definitely be punished. Official reprimand, demotion (if applicable, he seems to be pretty low rank already), disqualified from promotion for some years, revocation of some privileges, maybe even a fine (assuming that the Federation even does fines, considering their economic system). But thrown out? No. It's not that overwhelming of an infraction. Haven't served at all, though, so I don't know from that perspective.

The analogy of a submarine in backup batteries hit me the wrong way. This is a nit pick but I feel I must inform. In so far as modern united states submarine, the battery can power the entire boat for quite some time (that is its purpose) including engines and weapons. Speed will be limited and it will suck for the crew but overall performance will only degrade a small amount. A better example would be a submarine that was on the back diesel generator (Turing your high speed low drag nuclear powered war machine into a tug boat)

The Enterprise is a hybrid of being a Federation owned ship which employs both military Starfleet officers and civilian crew. And so there is different codes of conduct for the different status of people on the ship. BTW remember when speaking of Tarses that he is referred to by Picard as a crewman. He has no rank and never attended Starfleet academy.

I don't think the situation with the suspicion of Sabotage against the Klingon was unreasonable. The reactor started to failling at the exact time they discover about him is too big of a coincidence. This is after the Borg invasion and the bugs attempt to hijack Starfleet, so There are seeds of paranoia planted in everyone. I don't think they were showing prejudice against the Klingon, at least not intentionally. I think It is more because he was not from the ship then for any race question. And I find very interesting that Worf was offended that they assumed he was not trustworthy because of his father, but he did the same thing with the boy because of his Romulan blood. This is Worf's bigotry against the Romulans speaking.

There's a strong discrepancy between "Klingon accuses Troi and Riker of racism... where have I heard that before" and "Sati uses Tarsis' (really distant) Romulan heritage against him and I'm not saying it's totally wrong". Look, either race matters or it doesn't. The point of the video is straightforward - the race of an individual is NOT evidence of innocence or guilt. And generalizing people this way is pretty much the definition of racism.

I think that you could really interpret things both ways politically. I am personally more left leaning but there is a lot of interesting stuff regarding this. For instance there is a limit towards those who are actually racist, sexist, or homophobic, and those who just put their foot in their mouth. However is also the mater that most people who are racist sexist and homophobic don’t actually come out and say that they are. And then their are the people who are unwilling to try to be better or admit their mistakes. Honestly this episode is way more relevant now then it was back then. This is an interesting interpretation between right and left. Either a commentary between extremely aggressive political correctness (agree with me or your scum.) or profiling and conspiracy theorists who are overly hostile towards anyone even remotely different or hold a different opinion.

Will say, you got a little too philosophical over the use of the word "interrogation". Whenever you question someone in a formal or aggressive manner, you are interrogating them. When the police bring you into the station for "questioning", they are interrogating you. The word "interrogating" just has a harsher vibe to it than "questioning".

I'll just say it. I don't believe in innocent until proven guilty and I never did. I know exactly what it's like to be judged and punished for something I haven't done. I also know that if the kind of scrutiny that's been on me my whole life was on those attacking me, there'd never have been a problem. Just like if it was a free-for-all with Psi-Corps in this episode, Troi calls her mom who throws down a transcript of Satie's thoughts and it's game over when the fact that she's either delusional or an evil bitch who doesn't believe in rights is out on the table. Call in a squad of v'tosh'ktur Vulcan mercenaries. Call Psi-Corps. This could have happened BEFORE the Romulan blood thing comes out, and even if it happened after, Satie drowns right along with Tarses. And maybe he's not implicated even then. Maybe when Tarses gets his mind raped, the mercenary digger reveals that Tarses never would betray the Federation. See, you have to have this perfect storm of incomplete information that sets the stage perfectly and makes someone look horrible, *and* you have to have this burden to prove you're innocent laser pointed ONLY at one person. Yes, innocent until proven guilty can seem like a great idea in exactly the right light with exactly the perfect storm of horribly incriminating incomplete information. Yes, you can cherrypick or construct reasonable cases where "innocent until proven guilty" is the only possible life preserver for someone to grab onto. (You can also construct equally silly cases where the race card would be the only thing protecting an innocent person, but that doesn't make the race card a good thing.) In reality, the more information laid out on the table, the more reliably innocent people are exonerated and guilty people are punished, both. You can say that's not justice because rights, but then I would ask, where do you get the right to create those rights? And as for you, Simon Tarses, I don't have much against you. I get that you did something that "wasn't that bad" and I don't hate you, but I *do* want you to lose your job, because I want the guy who didn't lie to have that job. Suppose he's an alternate you from another timeline. He didn't lie. And yes, we both know he wasn't accepted into Starfleet, precisely because he embodied the high ideals of Starfleet: He told the truth when he knew that would damn him and cost him his dream. Well I want to give him your job, because that's who ought to have that job if those ideals mean anything. And I think when we have more drumheads, not fewer, and everything comes out in the wash, that's exactly how things will turn out. It will turn out that EVERYONE has two drops of Romulan blood, or a crazy Nazi uncle they once thought the world of, or gets off by sniffing Klingon panties, and then men like you who want to be honest... actually can be. No one will have to lie anymore.

Xenophobia is largely used for same race hatred. Like how the Chinese hate the Japanese. You can't really call them "Racists" but it's similar. So that's where xenophobia applies. Racism and Xenophobia definitely have overlap, but not always.
@rosiehawtrey

I suggest that you read your history a bit better. The Chinese have *every* right to hate the Japanese. Look up unit 731, and go from there. And it's happened between those two time after time. After all, I think its fair to hate a people who drop bombs crammed with plague infected fleas on civilians...

@@rosiehawtrey I'm British and I could say we are justified to hate the Germans because of WW2. But I wouldn't because that would be xenophobic. Your blanket justification of hating people based on the crimes of their ancestors is just vile nationalism.

"the catholic church was just more honest about what it was doing. " that line made me think that was a helluva burn. However, having been in service lying about yourself on your enlistment papers comes with a rather steep penalty. It comes with a dishonorable discharge and up to 2 years in fort leavenworth.

I appreciate your analysis of one of my all time favorite favorite TV shows. It is unfortunate though that certain race's/ethnicity's oppression/enslavement have caused some to use distasteful side comments to hint at how audacious it is for their privilege to be acknowledged. Everyone should just know their place right?

Yet Romulans and Vulcans have common ancestors, so he's not fully lying. And there is really very little difference between xenophobia and racism. And in the military we keep only one right, the right to vote, and maybe a right to legal counsel, and suspend the rest, period.

"We don't have enough evidence to say she's a racist" The instant you start using someone's blood against someone, specifically racial blood, you're a racist, full stop. Someone who isn't racist wouldn't even consider it a factor in damning someone.... sooo yeah, I'd find it perfectly valid that people criticized you on that. It's literally the kind of mentality that was used to justify Japanese internment during WWII and I feel like anyone familiar with that (which should honestly be most trekkies) should realize that. Hell, you even made a nazi reference at one point... consider this: even they believed they were doing the right thing and they considered those defending Jewish people to be just as culpable. This kind of thinking isn't independent from racism, it is one of the paths by which it is born.

@@LoreReloaded my guy, I literally have never heard someone use the phrase "snow flake" who hasn't been an asshole. But I'll be the idiot here and engage with this. Excuse me if I get the quote wrong, but this is the one I took most umbridge with "Good thing that in 2019 society doesn't expect you to be ashamed of something bad your ancestors did." I'm paraphrasing, you'd know the line better than I do. This line literally only applies to white folk in America and it shows a bad faith argument. Nobody is asking white folks to be ashamed. Maybe to just acknowledge systemic racism exists and the fact that we've largely benefitted from that system. I'm all for polite discussion on this, but considering you immediately jumped to name calling I'm gonna guess this whole topic is kinda triggering for you.
