Well a Scotsman clad in kilt left a bar one evening fair
And one could tell by how he walked that he'd drunk more than his share
He fumbled round until he could no longer keep his feet
Then he stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street
Ring ding diddle iddle I de oh ring di diddly I oh
He stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street
About that time two young and lovely girls just happened by
And one says to the other with a twinkle in her eye
See yon sleeping Scotsman so strong and handsome built
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt
Ring ding diddle iddle I de oh ring di diddly I oh
I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt
They crept up on that sleeping Scotsman quiet as could be
Lifted up his kilt about an inch so they could see
And there behold, for them to view, beneath his Scottish skirt
Was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth
Ring ding diddle iddle I de oh ring di diddly I oh
Was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth
They marveled for a moment, then one said we must be gone
Let's leave a present for our friend, before we move along
As a gift they left a blue silk ribbon, tied into a bow
Around the bonnie star, the Scot's kilt did lift and show
Ring ding diddle iddle I de oh ring di diddly I oh
Around the bonnie star, the Scots kilt did lift and show
Now the Scotsman woke to nature's call and stumbled toward the trees
Behind a bush, he lifts his kilt and gawks at what he sees
And in a startled voice he says to what's before his eyes.
O lad I don't know where you been but I see you won first prize
Ring ding diddle iddle I de oh ring di diddly I oh
O lad I don't know where you been but I see you won first prize

An Englishman, a Scotsman and an Irishman walk into a bar, or a pub if you prefer. They all order a pint of Guinness. Three flies come along and they all manage to land in the beer of the three patrons. The Englishman pushes his beer away in disgust and orders another one. The Scotsman takes the fly out and drinks his beer. The Irishman takes the fly out of his glass, holds it over the beer and starts shaking him up and down finally yelling "Spit it out you bastard! Spit it out!"

They left out the best part! 6. Our Scottish friend, still dressed in kilt, Continued up the street He hadn't gone ten yards or more, When a lass he chanced to meet. She said: "I've heard what's underneath there, Tell me, is it so?" He said: "Just slip your hand up, lass, If y'really want to know!" 7. So she slipped her hand right up his kilt, And much to her surprise, The Scotsman smiled, And a very strange look came into his eyes, She said: "Why, sir, that's gruesome!" And then she heard him roar: "If you stick yer hand up once again, You'll find it grew some more!"

Funny thing is how smart the humor is in this song. Back when you can skirt around a really raunchy adult topic but no explicit words are ever mentioned. At times I feel it's a talent we are sorely missing in modern comedy music. Then again the show I first heard this song on was Dr. Demento. Not only a great show with a lot of funny songs but it gave a lot of small independent people a chance to get on the radio. You know no name people like Weird Al started there.

@@jonathanbair523 Yup and I think "shaving cream" was another big one unique to that show on all the time. Eventually a show called Music with Mosquowits (sp?) or something like that came around after Dr. Demento left. It was a similar idea, and played funny songs but mostly ones that the DJ found. I think the key thing that made Dr. Demento amazing back in the day was he took submissions from people, even people like Weird Al who at the time recorded the song My Balonga I believe in a bathroom.

Love this song. It was played for us in a postcarding Zoom session when the topic of 'going commando' came up for some reason. With a little research we learned a Scotsman clad in kilt can be called 'going regimental' if he doesn't wear underwear; in America it is called 'going commando'. Going regimental may be done on a routine basis, I don't know. Going commando is only supposed to be done when under harsh combat conditions where wearing underwear becomes irritating (or you're in college and your only underwear is all in the wash)...

Recently I turned 21 my I’m Finnish on my dads side and German in my mothers so I’ve had my fair share of the drink especially sense I live in the northern Appalachian mountains and learned to run a still at 12. Regardless we went to eat and a pretty famous pub and I got myself to yeunglings cause of how crowed figured by time the waitress went an refilled the first I’d be down with the second. My Dad laughs a giddy laugh. If you knew him you’d understand the horrified looks from the family and he tells me my grandfather (who died long before I was born) did that anytime he went drinking “always ordered two beers so when he finished the first it be refilled when he finished the second”. That made my week to be honest I never knew but my dads always telling me how much I’m like him.
