Clip from the 1st season Dukes of Hazzard episode, "Repo Men." This episode has the first appearance of Boss Hogg's wife, Lulu. The used car dealer, Ace Parker, is played by Jerry Rushing, the real-life former moonshiner and runner who influenced Gy Waldron's creation of the movie "Moonrunners" as well as The Dukes of Hazzard. The wrecked "71" car in this scene is "LEE 1" which has a saga of its own. Like us on Facebook: / dukesofhazzardcounty

I see where you're going with that. Most Dukes episodes begin with a car driving (or being chased) on the road, almost always the General Lee (the obvious exception of Mary Kae's Baby). "Daisy's Song," "Luke's Love Story," and "Days of Shine and Roses" are the only exceptions off the top of my head (if anyone has any other episodes, please share here). But "General Lee was highly respected in Hazzard County" and "This Murphy, is he a race car driver?" are just great lines leading to greater lines.

Hollywood's interpretation of southern people always seems to show through in these kinds of movies. When it was filmed in Georgia it seemed more authentic. The characters weren't baffoonish or racist stereotypes that are often displayed in movies that take place in the south. But when it moved to hollywood the characters started to become southern stereotypes. I still loved the show despite Hollywood mangling the final seasons.

Agreed! The story is that CBS never really thought it was going to be successful. I kind of get the feeling the show got the green light in large part because CBS was going to air the Daytona 500 live for the first time in three weeks and it just fit in to the culture of the times (Smokey and the Bandit a couple of years before, for instance). When the show did well, the decision to move it to California was basically for cost. But what you can plainly see is that the original realism that Gy Waldron wrote and created was Hollywoodized, so to speak. Instead of a show for country southerners by country southerners, you had Hollywood deciding what it should be and going back to that sort of disparaging cornball feel that's so prevalient when Hollywood tries to write south. You see Bob Clark wrote this episode. He was involved in Moonrunners and Porky's, two movies that might not have been critically acclaimed but were certainly southern and certainly NOT corny. I have always wondered what Dukes would've been like if it kept this original vision. I think it would have been a better show, but I also don't think it would have lasted as long on the air.

@@tommyg9719 It's the difference between the Gy Waldron vision for the show and the Hollywoodization of the show, which often is demeaning and engages in southern stereotypes. Waldron was very proud of the writers in the early episodes. Soon they found cartoon writers (literally) to write scripts.

You can manually shift any automatic transmission like that. Granted newer ones tend to be really clunky at manually downshifting to the point you'd never want to do it if you cared anything about either going fast or having a long lasting transmission, but older 3 speeds don't mind it at all.

No. The converter can't handle that kind of abuse. After the 1st try the internal parts start showing damage. 2nd try, transmission fluid and assorted parts will be under the car. A lot of the parts will be scraped and the expensive converter gets rebuilt.

@@4valvemark98 - with today's transmission prices you'd be better off getting another car.

@@danielmarinucci7708 I'm sticking with my belvedere it never left me stranded, on the other hand my previous daily driver went through 2 4l65e's in 3 years driving 50 miles everyday to work. I've neutral dropped my belvedere too many times and yet that transmission took a beating all I've replaced are shift linkages and the fluid. older 727s are robust and easy to work on I love em. Although you're not wrong, today's cars can't do that and unfourtunatly they're all sealed transmissions. If something was to happen the whole transmission would have to be replaced instead of fixing the problem.
