I "Chased and Paced" D&S K28 #476 (recently shopped and converted to burn oil) from Durango to Elbert Creek/Rockwood. This was a “Shakedown with Tonnage” test train to Cascade Friday 5/27/2022. They had an R-4 rod bearing problem the day before but had no problems I am aware of on this run and she looked and sounded great. Chris Brophy was engineer, Scott Kennedy fireman, and Kyle Danielson conductor.

I still remember when I visited D&S last summer I got to go in 476’s cab while I was on a tour of the roundhouse and even take 2 pieces of coal from her tender as a souvenir. And now nearly a year later she’s now oil fired. Can’t believe myself but I’m fortunate I got to see the engine before it was converted to oil.

Hi Bob, Excellent video again from the Durango & Silvertono. The K28 is now also converted to oil firing. Very nicely filmed this trip. It was a pleasure to watch the video again. Greetings from Germany

Was starting to wonder about you, Haven't seen any new content for awhile. Gorgeous day perfect lighting. And thank so much for your crystal clear audio. I hope to see a VLOG someday about firing with oil, such as head sheet and lining difference and what they are using for atomization and preheat. ( I will be in Antinio last week in July, Would love to buy you a bottle of water or frosty beverage) Safe travels

Personally I'm happy about the oil conversion on the Durango and Silverton. They did what they had to to keep steam narrow gauge railroading alive. Many thanks to the Durango and Silverton.

Yes, they are/did. People refer to it as the "Fall Rush" as in when the RR would bring out every stock car they had to mooove the cows! Catch my latest upload on the C&TSRR After the Fall Rush. Thanks for watching and commenting.

The only steam engines that need to be changed from using coal to oil on the Durango & Silverton are 478, 481, and 486.

Well the 478 needs an extensive teardown and rebuild and the 486 needs the same. The 481 is way into her 1472 right now so conversion doesn’t make too much sense.
