The 2022 Tata Steel Masters is a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 15-30 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen heads the field, which includes stars such as 2020 Champion Fabiano Caruana and Anish Giri.
The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. If there is a tie for first place the top two after tiebreaks then play a 2-game blitz (5+3) playoff and, if still tied, an Armageddon game. The monetary prizes will be shared evenly. Magnificent game. Really impressive. Very few -- or maybe no -- "lost opportunity" moves by either player, and a well-deserved denouement. Van Foreest seems to me like the very picture of the "sensible chess player," making very principled moves and sufficiently defending his position most of the time, but then seizing the opportunities which are presented to him in an intelligent way. What do you guys think?

Simply brilliant! Reminds me of Fischer playing "dubious lines" such as Ruy Lopez exchange variation, which was "drawish" only because Fischer wasn't the opponent. (Bobby Fischer's record with the Ruy Lopez Exchange Variation 12 games: 9 wins, 3 draws, and 0 loses!) Van Foreest proved Nimzo-a3 can win against opponents who memorize supercomputer moves but don't consider an engine's reject-lines can win against mere mortals.
