This is amazing! I’ve been doing almost exactly this with drybrushing two tones of greys and army painter gravelord grey for Deathwatch, but the volumetric touch with the smaller Drybrush is such a great touch that levels it up, I’m def gonna use! This was honestly just so encouraging that I’m on the right path!

This is amazing. I just started a Black Legion army to get back into 40k after about 15 years, and I was inspired by a Black Templar model I saw online with red edge highlights that gave it an infernal look. I can't wait to try this method, it looks like it'll give a much softer effect than my hard edges.

Always amazes me when you show a technique which isn't quiet obvious. At first i think nah I don't like that, this isn't looking good. But then, the last step comes and everything before just fits together (like here when adding black lotus) and it looks magnificent. Thank you especially for this tutorial. I find black armor one of the difficult colour schemes, since without proper highlighting details can be missed.

This looks fantastic. So I had a go. My first attempt has failed. I did use Black Templar and I probably thinned it too much. I also went a little heavy with the dry-brushing so I had a fairly blue-grey model. This combined with the too thin Black Templar forced me into a second coat. The result was a black miniature with no highlight / definition. Oh well, try again!

Great minds think alike I guess; I settled on almost this exact recipe after some experimentation, but applied with airbrush and using black Ghost Tint instead of xpress color (which didn't exist at the time) and some manual highlighting. I think this might be faster, I'm keen to try it out to see which I like better. And, you know, eventually paint the actual army sometime in the next couple decades...

Your method would be faster for vehicles though, maybe a hybrid technique could be the ideal solution

For large vehicles I would probably apply the Xpress paint with my airbrush, the other steps would be identical

Considering using this for my Black Legion. My only concern would be that you wouldn’t get any edge highlights along the inside of the gold trim on the actual panels. Definitely useful but maybe better suited for loyal marines

It's definitely more difficult to get the EM look on them but if you don't care for inside edge highlights and only volumetric highlights, works very well

I tried it today on two intercessors but on the first one the dry brush with Thunderhawk Blue was a bit too heavy I think, so the 1:1 mix of Black Lotus and Xpress medium just didnt cover it enough. It ended up a bit too bright for my taste. I did some lighter drybrushing on the second Intercessor and mixed 1,5 parts Black Lotus with 1 part medium, which looked alot better for my taste. I will try another one with Black Templar Contrast because I feel like the Xpress paint has a slightly thicker consistency which feels awkeward to work with on flat surfaces. I will eventually have to do 5 of each speed paint colour and see if I can manage to get even results accross multiple miniatures, or if the results vary too much between models. The best thing about the Xpress paint is the very matte finish and whenever its pooling a bit too much, its not a big deal because it dries very evenly. Contrast on the other hand will get an even more shiny finish in areas where it pooled too much. Sadly drybrushing is no exact science in my opinion, there is always the element of surprise :D Thats the only downside of this method: my poor drybrushing skills ;-)

Well, drybrushing is indeed an apparently simple technique that is anything but simple. The better you are at it, the better results you will get using this method. As for the Xpress Vs Contrast, the Xpress might seem trickier to apply over flat surfaces but it smooths out DO MUCH BETTER than anything else that the final result will be better. Feel free to experiment though

I’ve just tried out this method, but I feel like black lotus looks very green. It doesn’t look like that in the video at all. The transparency is just right, but it should be bluish or neutral in tone imo. Tried out using black Templar, leviadon blue and contrast medium mix on the next model, but will have to redo it. I need way more contrast medium for the contrast paints. I also probably should’ve tried just black Templar without the blue.
