I've got plenty of courses that help players of almost any skill level start learning SRV's style of playing, but some people want to learn on their own. I've had so many people ask me over the years which songs are the best SRV songs to start with. In this lesson I'll give you a list of six songs that I think are more approachable, and explain why I chose them for this list.

This is a ‘64 Blackface Twin profile on my Kemper from the Tone Factory guys. I just have the gain on the profile set a little higher than the past few times I used it.

Also, I’ve learned that if I keep my vocal mic tilted up I can still get a clear dialog but less of the string noise because it puts the strings further outside the pickup pattern. That makes the Kemper sound much better because that acoustic string picking noise isn’t as noticeable in the vocal mic.

I thing its cold shot. After learn the tecniques its a really easy song. And the solo its easy to get by ear, not so fast and not so many different notes( box 1 almost all the time). And of course life by the drop.

Great video. As an avid SRV fan, I found that his techniques and habits make a good portion of it when I play his songs. Heavy right hand, Raking hard as you hit a big bend, the speed of bending whether it’s slower or fast. Hard vibrato at the right times. He’s a fun guy to try and emulate

I really appreciate your top down video technique. It makes it much easier to see what I see, vs transposing a frontal view lesson and having to think in my mind... "OK, that's an A, 5-7,5-7 on the D and A strings" then doing it and remembering my own sight picture of that happening when I play it.

thank you so much for existing on youtube and doing these awesome lessons. I remember about 8 yrs ago when i used to watch all the different guitar teachers on youtube and than when i seen yours i always skipped it cuz i thought it was to advanced to learn but at same time i still new at that you where giving out really good lessons but at that time i wasn't to comfortably familiar with the scales etc, but now i just been listening to srv for past 5 yrs and recently 1 yr ago start listening to it and play guitar at same time tryna figure out what hes doing, than i bounce back to your videos because you do the best lessons of stevie. thanks for sharing all your helpfull info and i hope you never stop making lessons.

I think it is important to understand you don't have to learn the song in full, There is very few songs out there that wont have a few consecutive licks that you can't play. There first "song" I learned was lenny by SRV, The first few seconds of that song I was able to play only having serious issues with the first 2 chords(Don't remeber their name but they are a bit hard on the pinky for me). Its not like I could play it good but I could play it well enough for me to smile from playing something I understood.

I've just learned Texas Flood. It was fairly easy for me (coming from a shreddy background). By easy, I mean I learned the notes fairly easily. Fitting them correctly into the rhythm is taking me a bit longer than I anticipated. "Deceptively easy" is a phrase that springs readily to mind.

i started with Texas Flood cause i figured it was slow and thus easy. lol! I was in for a rude awakening. 10 years later I still don't have it down. Though one i knew it note for note. But i've forgotten it. Lenny was the first one i learned to be able to play at any level of "comfort" and by comfort i mean amazingly mediocre and bad. lol.

Attempting Say What as your first SRV song was an ambitious endeavor! I still can't get that one down completely. When I started with his style I bought Lightnin' blues 83-87 and just picked out cool licks until I got them down. I started easy and focused on the phrasing, then added more complex licks. I never have played many of his songs note for note, but I have learned to play in his style pretty well. I think this video provides a good starting point for anyone trying to learn the style of SRV. Some of the songs you chose have more value than you may think. For example Ain't gone 'N' Give Up on Love. Anyone that wants to understand SRV has to understand his vibrato and his enormous bag of bending tricks. That song is great to study. Fast doesn't mean a thing unless you have phrasing. I think I would also include Life by the Drop as a simple acoustic song with tons of feeling. It also helps work on the shuffle. Great video! Loved it. And your tone is great. What amp were you using?

Great tone! I would say anything hendrix and srv is a hell of a leap of faith as far as “easier” goes. Id say pick a favorite and dive in the deep end. Sink or swim brother. Lenny, little wing, voodoo child, and dirty pool! Facegasms and lifegaurds are not provided ✌🏽 😂

I did exactly the same thing my Blues brother. Aprox. 2 years of playing then took on Lenny as my first SRV song. Took me years to learn. It's not that the memorizing all the notes was too difficult, it's the timing, phrasing & overall melody that's so difficult to replicate. No doubt the beauty of Lenny is in the subtlties

I think some issues with Stevie and similar guitarists is as a beginner there are lots of techniques that you may not learn from instructors, the rakes, the palm muting, the bending. A big hurdle can be the rthym because like in something like Texas Flood or Tin Pan alley, he just hangs on bends and he's constantly bending to specific notes and as a beginner your ear isn't as good. You can't just play the notes in order and sound good. You gotta be aggressive and bend those notes up the right pitch and the tempo has to be right cause the picking might be like slow slow quick slow.

I got it now, that was a great description. Should be the title of the video. 😝 … just butcher a Stevie rhythm, and muddle through a kind of Chuck Berry like solo. That’s how you play an easy Stevie Ray Vaughan song. 😝🤘🏻🇺🇸🎸 Just messing around, I like parts of these Texas blues videos. 👍🏻🇺🇸 I know they’re more for beginners. But I love picking up little things here and there that I may not have been aware of. Good job man! 👍🏻🎸

Only a few Stevie Ray Vaughan songs that might be considered ‘easier’ since they are slow enough for one too wrap their ears around. No SRV song is easy in any way. Really good, and great, players spend a lifetime to get closer. Like this gentleman here, and myself. I wasn’t going to watch the video, but now I’m curious. I have played for many years. Self taught. That is more bad than good in my case. I am trying to learn SRV version of Little Wing. I can do a bit but when he starts shredding I'm lost by the side of the road. I've tired to find something or someone to explain how and what I need to do to understand how to do it. I know most scales and regularly practice playing leads over backing tracks. I can and do use pedals to "fake" sounding like I'm tearing it up but it's all bs. I want to know how to do it note for note. It's become a bucket list thing. A milestone that I've got to reach. He'll I'm willing to pay for lessons, whatever it takes. Does anyone out there in YT land have any advice about where you start. I understand you need to know how much I can do before seeing where I would need to start. I can do anything in LW except the fast parts. I do not understand how to get from where I'm at to being able to play the fast parts. Peace and health.
