The Easiest Way to Find Wild Camping Spots

One of the best ways to find perfect remote campsites is just to get out and scout for them and that’s my mission today in. I’m starting off in the desert and I’ll be working my way up the East Side of the San Bernardino Forest along Burns Canyon and my plan today is to record as many campsites as possible on Gaia GPS and find the perfect one to stay at for the tonight, cook up a little dinner and enjoy a the solitude of being off the grid.
Today, I’m climbing up the Burns Canyon trail that begins in the lush desert floor just outside of Pioneer Town California and winds its way though the canyon and up into the mountains. I’ve traveled this trail many times over the years and it’s a great way to access a massive network of desert and mountain trails in the region. This trail is just under 20 miles long and will take about 3-4 hours. But there are several trails that branch off from Burns Canyon, so you can really spend days along this route if you want. The terrain is rough and today was the roughest I’ve ever seen it.

Thank you everyone for the amazing comments. A few folks have asked about the recipe for the meal I cooked: Mini Chicken Pot Pies ★★★★★ Ingredients: 1 cup of cooked chicken breasts diced OR 2 cans cooked chicken 1/2 can cream of chicken soup 1/2 cup frozen mixed veggies 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1 teaspoon of dried thyme 1 teaspoon of dried basil 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 3/4 teaspoon garlic salt 1 (10 oz) cans Pillsbury biscuits (you only need 6 of the biscuits) Directions: In a bowl, combine the cooked chicken, cream of chicken soup, frozen veggies, cheese, herbs and spices. Open the biscuits and use your fingers to gently press them into flat disks. (This will make it easier for you to push them up the sides of the muffin pan.) Lightly grease a muffin tin and place the Pillsbury biscuits into each cup, pressing into the bottom and up the sides. (Note: if using a silicone muffin mold, you do not need to grease.) Evenly spoon the pot pie mixture into each biscuit cup. Sprinkle a little extra shredded cheese on top if you’d like (optional). Cover the Omnia and bake over low heat for about 20 minutes, checking periodically to ensure they do not burn. (When the biscuits are golden brown, they’re done.) Let rest for about 3 minutes and dig in!

The storms from the last couple of years have been heavy, two hurricanes came up from Baja after the La Nina in the Pacific Ocean broke and began its switch to El Nino. They expect a full winter of El Nino storms starting soon with lots of rain coming, we shall see.

Make some beeswax cups using lids and keep a gallon of water to fill those beeswax cups - place them away from your camp kitchen as a peace offering. Beautiful scenery and wildlife.

In the back country I have done geology research and hunted solo for years when young and enjoyed the solitude. Since being a family man have only gone with wife, kids and son for many years. Now as an older guy I still Jeep with the wife and clubs groups. However now with Brad's cool solos I have new interest in pre-run club trips solo. Be doing the Black Rock in Nevada soon... solo. Thanks Brad you are an inspiration.

There’s just something about cooking and eating outdoors that just adds so much to the experience. Like, normally I wouldn’t care about how to make pot pie. But because here you are, out in the wilderness and with all your gear and self-sufficient, I’m intrigued by it. And for some reason food just tastes so good after being out all day on a trail. Maybe because you realize what a blessing it is to have it and something primordial about the replenishment? Idk. But great job on the pot pies! They looked delicious! I told my wife I know how to make pot pies now because of Trail recon! 😂

Loving these new videos you’ve been doing. I’m constantly looking up local trails on KZfaq to get a sense of how difficult they are, if they have campsites on them, how long they’ll take, etc. And although there are many smaller KZfaqrs in the SoCal area that have been helpful as well. You do it much better in my opinion. Please keep these coming. Additionally, I’ve started going to National Parks with my family and enjoy off-roading while there. We did Point Sublime at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon 3 months ago and are planning on going to Sequoia, Kings Canyon, & possibly Yosemite next year. Would love to see you do some trails at National Parks as well.

I love how you kept the encounter with the yellow jackets in the final cut! There’s a tendency to over romanticize these adventures and polish them up, but real life isn’t perfect! Sometimes you get a swarm of yellow jackets after your sammich 😂

Enjoyed the ride along. Had a tip for you… when cooking (Boy Scout trick) if you put a thin coat of dish soap on the bottom of the pans before use... makes it a lot easier on clean up.

Was thinking of what exactly you do to plan, film, edit and publish one of your trail expeditions? Brad, I love your videos! Well made, lots of good hints and tips. Well, for us in Germany, not even a farming gravel track is legal to ride. Therefore, we often go to Italy, France or Spain..... I was born and raised in San Bernadino. I have been living in Washington state since 1998. I plan on staying down there during the summers in my Hummer H3 and explore the San Bernadino mountains and Mojave dessert. Id really like to join an overland club down there. 2N07Y is a fun trail. I have only run it west to east headed to Pappy and Harriets. The campsite you stopped at in the video at 17:45 I have stayed at before in the wintertime, it's a great spot

14:39 Thanks for all of the great content, I really dig it! ..especially when you are out trekking in my backyard! (I’m in Yucca Valley) I was wondering, have you ever climbed to the peak of Tip Top Mountain? The trail for it begins just northeast of this area (14:39.) If you haven’t, I would highly recommend it. A tad challenging in a couple of spots, but GREAT views of Johnson Valley and you can also see Baldwin lake as well. Not quite a 360 degree view, but close. Thanks again for your videos and the tons of inspiration you give all of us viewers!

Burns Canyon is fun. Did that road 4 weeks ago, those large boulders you passed were blocking the road. We had to turn around as did not want to do Heartbreak to get around the blockage. And I really love your Patriot trailer.

good idea to add some yellow jacket traps to the gear. they aren't just looking for moisture, they want to eat the meat too. some people call them "meat bees". they'll strip a carcass to the bone. they can totally ruin a good camping spot. if you hang a few of those bait bags around the perimeter it helps a lot

Some states and forests are better than others. Here near me in Washington, spots are few and far between. It's difficult to find long trails that connect so you can stay on dirt. Many offshoot forest roads have no turn-arounds, no pull-out, and tons of brush over growing. Colorado on the other hand.. I could probably cross most of it entirely on dirt and find spots almost every mile at the very least. Montana seems to be somewhere in the middle of the two with the added benefit of Grizzlies.

We use Pillsbury Pie Crust for our Chicken Pot Pies I have 4 small round Pyrex dishes that I can make four meals out of the 2 round pie crusts....But those sure did look Yummy Brad and Regina might've to try them out one night for supper !!!

I've thought about using pie crusts or even the crescent roll sheets, but I'd need to cut them out into circles. Granted, I'm sure it wouldn't be that much extra effort, but what I like about the biscuits is that they're already the right shape, all I have to do is flatten them out a bit. This meal is all about easy!

@@regenakowitz I just use our Corningware 6" dish and lightly push it into the dough crust that gives me the perfect circle and with the leftover I rollout and make another set. But either they are yummy !!!

Great video! I recently did that loop you wanted to do 2N70Y it’s a great trail not bad at all I did it in my XJ on 31s open diffs. A Silverado 4x4 and a Fj cruiser 2wd rear locker also made it through no problem. There is one area with a boulder leaning in to the road that got tight with the bigger rigs, but other than that it was a great trail.

I enjoyed your trip and will definitely give those chicken pies a try. In cruising KZfaq, I saw another overlander manufacturer called 27North. This might be an opportunity for you to explore as an ambassador for them by taking their rigs on demo or test over landing trips.

Mini Chicken Pot Pies ★★★★★ Ingredients: 1 cup of cooked chicken breasts diced OR 2 cans cooked chicken 1/2 can cream of chicken soup 1/2 cup frozen mixed veggies 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1 teaspoon of dried thyme 1 teaspoon of dried basil 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 3/4 teaspoon garlic salt 1 (10 oz) cans Pillsbury biscuits (you only need 6 of the biscuits) Directions: In a bowl, combine the cooked chicken, cream of chicken soup, frozen veggies, cheese, herbs and spices. Open the biscuits and use your fingers to gently press them into flat disks. (This will make it easier for you to push them up the sides of the muffin pan.) Lightly grease a muffin tin and place the Pillsbury biscuits into each cup, pressing into the bottom and up the sides. (Note: if using a silicone muffin mold, you do not need to grease.) Evenly spoon the pot pie mixture into each biscuit cup. Sprinkle a little extra shredded cheese on top if you’d like (optional). Cover the Omnia and bake over low heat for about 20 minutes, checking periodically to ensure they do not burn. (When the biscuits are golden brown, they’re done.) Let rest for about 3 minutes and dig in!

A little advice on those damn meat bees....Take along a bit of bacon or bologna with you. Take a couple of pieces out & throw them away as far as you can from you so they mainly go to it & not you.
