Hi Dave! This link gets us the "What is a 2-5-1?" document, not the "2-5-1 lines" pdf.

I can't even keep track of how many 251 improvisation videos I've watched in the last six weeks, and this by far is the clearest one, and the one that best actively led me to creating my own lines. I'm using it for the first 8 bars of Autumn Leaves, so basically a Major 251 followed by a minor 251, and I'm so happy with the results. Thanks so much for all your hard work and generosity putting this together.

Dave great video! I'm totally new to this and having taught myself to play I can't figure out how to play the bottom "A" on my sax, I can only get to "Bb" ( sample line using 7 3 7 bar 43 ) could you kindly do a video on the notes outside the "normal " fingerings? For example above F# in the altissimo and the lower notes past Bb.

There is no low A on saxophone (unless you have a low A key). This is written in concert pitch, not saxophone pitch.

Having explored these concepts for a while, I only just started learning the lines in all 12 keys. It takes forever the first few times, but it's so much more valuable that sticking to safe keys. Just learning 251 in 12 keys gives you 36 chords under your fingers. I highly recommend doing this rather than trying to race through the material in one key.

Dave, thanks so much for these 2-5-1 videos! Looking forward to video #3! You’ve broken down the “what is” part in a way that finally makes sense! Also love the idea of writing out the 2-5-1 for each key. Seems like a no-brainer exercise for better understanding. Side notes-I also play Mark’s mpc…they’re the best! Go Phils🎉

Hey Dave! I’ve been learning a lot of jazz these last few weeks and this channel has been a huge help! However, recently I’ve moved to learning licks and memorizing all twelve keys without my fingers getting jumbled is really difficult! Do you have any advice for learning licks in all twelve keys?

Can you play all 12 major scales? If not, that's the first place to start. Make sure you can actually play in each key before trying licks and lines in all the keys. Once you have that down, take things SLOWLY. Just like practicing a tough written passage, taking lines through all the keys is just about learning it correctly from the beginning, then speeding it up as necessary. Remember - practice makes PERMANENT.

Great What Do you think about memorizing licks? In my opinión maybe is better to go on thinking in voice leading notes, and after let your brain do the rest of work

Great question - it's something I dove into in my Saxophone Success Community this month, and maybe I'll make a video on it soon. Basically there's a balance between things, and I think you can incorporate everything into your playing!

And I have one question: In one of the lines, you had a low A written. How can you play that on a sax??? I came to the sax from the clarinet, which as you probably know better than I do goes all the way down to the low E (even low C for bass clarinets), but is there a sax that goes below low B flat? Thanks!

This wasn’t meant for any one instrument, so if you’re playing it in the key I wrote, take it up an octave!
