Nobody's favorite job is removing the old floor and subfloor, but after you see what is under it, you won't want to skip that step!
My name's Chuck, I've been professionally converting buses for the last 7 years and was director of operations for a charter bus company before that but it's time for a change.....
IN THIS SERIES, follow along as I build a skoolie for myself, sharing my knowledge of buses and off-grid bus conversions along the way.

Great video? I am starting a build on a 40ft bus this month and will be living in it while I build. Really good shape so I got lucky and I really needed to watch this video for all the great info. I have been watching your videos for a few hours a day to get as much info as I can.❤

I've seen quite a few of these demos on KZfaq and thought, while feeling sorry for the people's poor backs, "why remove the rubber first- just lift the whole subfloor", so it was extra satisfying to watch this 👌 great job and thank you for the tips and tool info! Will be doing this in a couple months!

My wife and I bought a bus from a district near Dallas and thought that a Texas bus would not have any rust. When we pulled up the floor we discovered damp plywood and a good deal of rust. It turns out that the school district would frequently clean their buses using a power washer. The result of this was water being forced under the rubber mat, soaking into the plywood and rusting the metal floor. The bus looked immaculate to the naked eye, but again, it is best to remove that floor before you build.

Wow, yes I got a bus in Maynard area near/in Austin where they did the same thing. Luckily the back part of the bus wasn’t so bad… just about to remove the driver’s seat… 🤞

I’m so glad you had this video available. I am purchasing a school bus (2006 international IC corp Dt 466 diesel with a Allison 3060 transmission) I wanted to see if you had any videos on how to remove the walls in the ceiling I’m going to be doing it alone so I love that you post all your work.

It was impressive that you and Ben did this in that efficient manner. Helped do it once, and it was not near as efficient or quick. Used long wrecking bars and wish we'd thought of the floor jack. No hurt backs that I remember, but definitely took a lot more effort to accomplish. So as always, I learned something watching a pro do it.

I purchased a 2008 Ford Econoline and looked long and hard and did not suffer from the " But I love it syndrome" and got one with low miles and no VISABLE rust but I knew under that rubber mat there had to be some because hey this is Michigan. My dad was like "just put the floor over the top of it you will have a barrier then" But Chuck your voice rang in my ears! I tore it up and they had freakin 2 sided foam carpeting backing and that thing had all sorts of yucky growings! I had to get a putty scraper to get all that crap off! Sure enough I did have rust by the wheel wells and back door which now I am treating, JBweld, primer then paint. Thanks for being my guardian van conversion angel :)

Nothing like a demolition that goes smoothly. Great idea with the floor jack. I was impressed with the good condition of the floor pans. Looks like Lyss's Monarch was in the background before the mini split was installed.🚐 And I saw Rio shoot by..🐺 lol Great work Chuck 👍

For my floor, I just took a circular saw with a demo blade set to 3/4" depth and made transverse and longitudinal cuts in the floor about 1' apart, dividing the plywood into a bunch of 1' squares. A six-foot-long steel digging bar then made short work to pry up each square and left me with a nice neat stack of small plywood squares to dispose of. I didn't remove the rubber layer first, or even any of the aisle trim since the demo blade cuts through it all easily. The problem with trying to remove entire sheets of the plywood at one time is that you're fighting against 32 square feet of glue force and/or trying to break up very large strong pieces of wood.

we have a 2010 international. it has a 90 degree corner bracket with Phillips screws going through the subfloor past the metal bottom. of course the screws are totally wasted with rust. we plan to grind the heads to remove the bracket around the edge of the bus. but Im worried that they will make the job of popping the subfloor off much more difficult, any advice?

The modern epoxy is so flexible it can be put in buses now give it a basic cleaning the floor that is and pour it after a thorough leveling job is done with six Jack's underneath the bus and 6 bubble levels inside that way you're going to get an even poor you really don't need to tear anything out could be these buses are from up north where they put salt on the roads but the buses that I've worked on there was only one that I actually needed any rust treatment
