Meet the Echidna. They’re covered in spikes, they have flat eyes, tongues almost as long as their bodies, a sixth sense, and they lay eggs. Everything about the Echidna is weird.

People say the echidna's reproduction strategy is weird but I think their high intelligence and ability to dream is the truly odd thing about them. They have such low metabolism and tolerance to low-oxygen environments, I expect them to be stupid yet somehow it is the opposite. People describe evolution as _"survival of the fittest"_ but a more accurate description is _"survival of the fit enough"._ Their intelligence must be important to their survival, it can't be just some added benefit on top of their other abilities.

My dog (yes, the one in my profile pic) once barked at an echidna for four ours. My dad let her bark for so long because he thought she was barking at rocks again 😂 he was so surprised to look into the hedge to see a smol spiky boi curled up, and then promptly took Peach away. Could you imagine being that poor echidna and being barked at for 4 hours?? I bet it just fall asleep 😂😂😂 Peach didn’t hurt her at all, she just barks so don’t worry.

As an Australian I really appreciate this video. I love echidnas. Another common problem, particularly in rural/remote areas is echidnas getting hit by vehicles. Their beaks are often hurt, and a broken beak will invariably leads to the echidna dying of starvation because they can’t find food or “chew” it.
