victoria hale Ceteris paribus is unrealistic. I'm telling you this as an economist. Ceteris paribus is used in almost everything we economist do in our world. If the attractive person has no personality, no confidence, a bad job/no job, no intelligence, etc and the other person has all that but looks they will get more action/friends than the pretty little face.... This comes from experience, I'm probably like a 6 out of 10 on the attractive scale, but I have everything else going for me. The women have no problem with it. The other friends of mine don't get anywhere near my level of friends/action. They are way more attractive than me. In my job I'm already making almost 6 figs and I'm 24 almost 25 and I've got over 100K net worth. "Mind over matter."-Plato the quote holds true even truer today. Now I'm not saying don't work and not eat unhealthy, but workout and eat healthy... However you turnout you turnout, but just work hard, be confident and be smart... You'll do great! I mean look at our US Presidential Candidates no one would say they are good looking at all. Look at Lil' Marco he's good looking married to an NFL Cheerleader how did that workout for him?

+GrijzePilion Thats because we all change at all times, due to hormon changes, deseases, ETC. For example, you would look better when you are in a good mood, not only you have a better perception of yourself because you are happy but being happy with yourself makes your body healthier, when you are on a rough patch you will look in the mirror an uglier person even if you are a top model, thats because meybe you feel deporessed or bad because your body is fighting a desease or you already have one. If you feel good you look better and vice versa. Having a high self steem will always make you look better. All this in junction with your ability or inability to be objective about the common beaty denominator in your region or country.

While some professions are definitely affected by people's appearances, in most cases "unattractive" (heavy) people are more likely to come from lower income households, go to lower achieving schools, and get lower paying jobs. Lower incomes mean less money to spend on health and wellness, including healthy foods and exercise, and in many cases a lower awareness of health vs. unhealthy practices.

@HereIAm247

It is true that there are individual perceptions of beauty, but most people know the biological beauty standards by instinct. Ex. posture, clear skin, thick and shiny hair, proportionate body and face, etc. Most people have the potential to be beautiful, but by telling people it doesn't matter, not everyone reach their beauty potential. When we say 'he/she is ugly', we are really saying he/she have bad posture (low confidence/self-esteem, and low social status), unclear skin (possible diseases), not fit or well-groomed (possible mental issues, or a possible burden to the pack), etc. It is our instincts that say that it could hurt us by associating with this person, either your health or your social status. It if bad for less attractive people of course (I have been there many times), but everyone does it subconsciously; even less attractive people. It is not because we want to be cruel, it is just subconscious human instinct.

It's not wrong, but in many "beauty" factors there are other factors involved, like weight is often associated with low socioeconomic status and if you are successful you are more likely to try to be competetive, of which looks is one factor. So it's not wrong, but many context effects are left out in this chart.

Have two nieces that are really beautiful. One actually was in modeling, until she discovered that she was really good at math & chemistry. They both went into the sciences and they had a hard time in school, because they constantly had to prove themselves to the faculty & their peers. They felt that they were brushed off as just a pretty face looking for a man. This is the downside of being pretty. But, for the most part it's a huge advantage. I've seen it again & again. If you have good looks, driven & smart, you can pretty much write your own pay checks.

Sure, if you analyze the aggregate data, beautiful people are statistically advantaged. That's very different from saying that ugly people cannot earn more than their beautiful counterparts. The difference is slight. Just work 5% harder than your more attractive counterpart and you'll get the job instead.
@wewantraw
@wewantraw 8 жыл бұрын
"Ugly" people shouldn't have to work harder, especially since attractiveness and beauty are all societal things our culture has slowly built up in each of our minds over time. Beauty standards in 100 years won't be what they are today, and people considered ugly right now could be models if they were born a couple 100 years earlier, but regardless of what the standards are they get an advantage.

So no one should ever criticize anything and progress should stop and we should all just stay the same (stepping out of line makes us idiots). Look up the word "incoherent" because the dude's argument is sound. You're wasting your own time, don't blame others for that. And insulting others that have done nothing but disagree with your views will really make others take your perspective seriously, seeing how maturely you handle diversity of thought.

@shaynewaugh2111
@shaynewaugh2111 10 жыл бұрын
Not entirely true. You can, and do, respond to many things subconsciously and so need not a conscious awareness of anything in the video. Social constructs inform you subconsciously that "attractiveness" is to be desired and so we treat those with the desired trait more favorably. And just because this is the trend doesn't mean that all attractive people at treated better or that all ugly people are treated worse. There are exceptions to every rule but the exceptions don't belittle the rule.
@HaranYakir
@HaranYakir 10 жыл бұрын
True, while people instinctively (or though social constructs) treat attractiveness as desirable, this is not what this video is saying. In order to respond to the "economic incentives" of being attractive you have to be consciously aware of them and act on them rationally.

To be honest this video doesn't seem super accurate. I'm sure in a lot of situations more attractive people do get treated better but how do you even measure beauty? Beauty is a broad and complex concept, I know many people who think someone looks smoking hot but other people don't see that at all. So I don't get how these percentages can be accurate, especially in terms of the high school/infancy part of this video. What teachers are doing polls about grades in terms of children's looks or who's judging a child's attractiveness in the study? Which parents are being studied in terms of their attention to their child in association with cuteness? To be honest the fact that these "facts" only have 1 case study on their slide show how invalid this is, because one of the first things they teach you in Uni is that a single case study doesn't mean shit. You need multiple, varied studies over a number of years for these kind of percentages/facts to be truthful.

"How do you even measure beauty?" That's exactly the question that gets explored in the article associated with the video: www.vox.com/2014/7/16/5905533/the-benefits-of-beauty. Turns out you can actually measure beauty up to a point. People often disagree about what is beautiful, but some features are universally beautiful. For example, horizontal symmetry in the face is considered beautiful. And if your facial features are in proportion and in the average spot, that's beautiful too.

+Bobster930 you cannot define it but you know it when you see it, just like porn:) In all seriousness though, I think though beauty is definitely in the eye of beholder, you can always have a quantitative measure of beauty by asking respondent to judge the subject on a scale from 1 to 10, or some other more sophisticated statistical measure to arrive at a numerica number of beauty. I believe there is a hookup app(I think it is called hot or not?) that do exactly like that, so it is always possible to quantify something that at first sight seems unquantifiable.

Less qualified, more attractive people got hired at McDonalds over me, I have an asymmetrical body and I feel like I am born to work under attractive people. I will always stand by what I believe is right, not to make myself feel better, but to give myself some clarification and let me move forward in life. So what, we are all just humans right?

In order to say that this is not based on bias, you require relevant data to back your point. Until then, you can't say it's not biased or preferential treatment based in prejudice. Whats up with the chart at 0:49 it is implying, that an (attractive) person only makes 280,000$ in his life and a unattractiv person makes just 50,000 in their entire life

modern days, modern ways.. ppl get too much in details as if they'd matter.. risking people be worried for no real reason for research that could be only described as worthless.. and no - i'm not an "ugly person", i'm just an ugly character (despite the relative good looks) myself.. but one thing I know - even if true - ppl just don't wanna know these things, instead they care what they can take care (if someone is indeed ugly - you're just making him/her more rebel, and for a no real reason I guess)

most female police officers iwe met were good looking. I think good looks are beneficial as men are less likely to end up in a confrontation with a beautiful woman and are more likely to follow orders. Id expect myself to be.

Another factor is that people who put effort into their appearance are more likely to put effort into other aspects in life. Lazy people aren't likely to put effort into their appearance. Obviously what comes into mind is the Paris Hilton types who are dumb, lazy and traditionally beautiful. But i'm talking about the average.

I'm calling bs and I'm kind of worried by this analysis: f.ex. it stated that heavier women earn less. but I would also say that poorer women weigh more bc they can't afford as much healthy food and bc they are in stress etc. so this would be a circle b) beauty lies in the eye of the beholder: how are you going to scale beauty? and another aspect plays into beauty: what you recognize. a Latino teacher in a white school will find Latinos more beautiful bc that's what they're used to. AND a large part of being pretty is the way you represent yourself. so growing up in a family traditionally considers beautiful will aide your chances of being pretty, not bc of genetics but bc of style. also: once again, rich , educated people will be considered more beautiful -> they anyways have a higher chance of getting into college.

Psychology, sociology and economics. All very soft sciences prone to bias. You really think there is an objective standard of beauty? Beauty is largely cultural rather than innate.

this is wrong lol they get their statistics from adding together the average of all people ugly and good looking no matter the job and then say thats the difference, same with women and men pay gaps, like a ugly person and a good looking person would make the same money in the same job same with men and women although you do have the whole they are more likely to get promotions and get the job and shit like hat but yeah

+Mike Litoris Yeah their numbers might not be acurate but it is a reality that more atractive people is hired more than ugly people in a job where you interact with others. For example if you are hirying a salesman you will hire the good looking one since people will feel more comfortable with him and maybe just buy the product to flirt with him. Also you would hire an ugly guy if you were talking about a bouncer for a night club, since you want people to fear him. So its pretty much common sense and you don't even need the numbers if you really know how people think. We all would select the most beautiful person to be our partner if personality and finances are not a factor, we may vary on taste, but but we all would pick the prettier one. But in the real world finances, personality, intelligence and other stuff come to play when we hire, date or marry someone. You are saying that the ugly prostitute makes the same money as the beautiful one. even if the job has a fixed salary the good looking person would most likely get a promotion sooner than the ugly person.

+novazee Look it by the bright side, if you get married, you may have a slightly stronger relationship. Women that know that their partner is considered "ugly" by others, think that the risk of getting cheated on is lower than the opposite. Guess that's a good thing!
