The guitar wizard of U2 has a nuanced sound that depends on both Fender and Vox amps. Get the skinny on how he EQs them and the precision of the Edge's ear.
The Edge tours with 45 guitars. He performs with 18 to 20 different guitars every show and has a backup for every one of them. The Edge does not endorse any string company but has Dallas Schoo constantly experimenting with different brands and gauges for each guitar and tuning.

Back in 2006, I was right right up in front of one of the ramps that the stage had and before the show, Dallas was checking something, walking up and down the ramp while playing Edges guitar ( the cream colored telecaster he would use for Vertigo) , I’m guessing he was checking something to do with the wireless transmitter, but the cool thing that I want to mention is that I called Dallas’s name and I guess he was surprised for someone to know and call out his name, so the stoped and turned around and came to me, I said “ Hey man, can I have a strum? “ He said “go for it, quick!” So I got I reached my hand and he put the guitar down so I could reach and I got to strum the guitar . I know it’s not a big deal, but it was very cool for me.

The Edge is all about tone....that’s it. He’s not flashy, he doesn’t shred, he just is a master tone down to the guitar pick. If you haven’t seen this band live you’ll be blown how good they sound compared to the albums. Even outside too, it’ll blow you away. I was shocked how well The Edge juggling all these guitars and dancing on all these pedals sounded while being on time....it’s insane.

Back on the day when I was a U2 groupie, and followed them around, Dallas Schoo was just as loved & nearly as well known as the band themselves. So when he'd come out to do Edge's guitar check just before the show began, he'd get just as many screams and shouts of his name as the band. 😀 He was so sweet & cordial, he'd nod & smile at those closest to the stage (obv his hands were full), all while remaining humble, with the understanding that the REAL show was yet to come. Nicest guy in the world, and FIERCELY loyal to the Edge, just what you want in a superstar guitar tech! (and he obv loves his job!) 👍🎸

I have a schematic and specs of the original Vox 1 when i was working with Vox to build him a backup amp for the 360 tour. We used an ac30cc2x back then as a base and tweaked it to his specs which is pretty much similar to his more recent Vox 1 replacement which he uses now. The reason why his Vox 1 sounds different from other 60s is because its a late 68 model which sounds different from the early ones. The cabinet is the original cabinet that came with the amp, but it has an incorrect backplate from pre 67. In the 360 tour backup, we used a MM transformer, changed some resistor values, speaker recone to vintage spec (cc2x came with Chinese blues), and added the mid knob per his request to adjust mid eq. In all honesty, his amps are definitely modded, but nothing too different than what you can buy off the shelf. You can see the amp we built him behind his two ac30s from that tour.

I find it hard to listen to people who start new sentences in the middle of talking. " Check it out - so he - somethings not right - you know he'll bring it - and - you know so it's - we'll lokk at it - so yo know - it's not - could we maybe." just finish a sentence XD

I love The Edge, but why on earth doesn't he just come to terms with one of the amazing profilers (Kemper, Line 6, etc,...) and the simplicity they offer for this kind of range of tones he's doing, especially if these are already no on-stage. He could make everyone's life easier by doing this and no one in the audience would be able to tell a lick of difference.

there is nothing like the tone of an old tweed amp. if you can afford to carry around multiple amps along with a repair guy then you just have to go with the best tone possible. of course when i gigged on friday i brought a newer tweed amp. too nervous about traveling around with a hard to replace amp. at home I always play vintage.

Mikael Lewis I’m totally not a profiler/molder guy, but it’s kind of absurd the way this rig is set up. If you’ve already decided to remove the amps on stage and go through in ear monitors, it makes no sense to keep a dozen vintage tube amps beneath the stage anymore. The sound at this point is indistinguishable from a pro level modeler/profiler for this purpose. Most other acts at this level have already made the switch for touring. It’s odd for an artist who’s so fluent in technology would cling to a setup from the 1950’s for amplifying live performances at scale

rob oliver....I guess it’s all in the ear of the beholder. I hear a difference between my tube amp rig and even the best modeler. You know, whatever works for you, I guess. This setup seems to work well for the Edge, so why change it? But I guess you know more than a really high profile 40 year pro touring veteran.
