*Update: track comparisons suggests that some or all of the tracks on the video may have been recorded with Roland Sound Canvas VA inadvertently in SC-88 Pro or SC-8820 mode. The download links in the comments contain proper SC-55 mode recordings.
A 1996 RPG by Bethesda Softworks. Extracted General Midi files rendered on Roland Sound Canvas VA in SC-55 mode. The track names are based on the files names, commonly used names, the groupings in the game executable and the midi code of the open source Daggerfall Unity project. Some of the tracks end abruptly and play extra notes due to how looping was implemented. I might do a properly looped version at some point. The download link in the comments has most of the stray notes edited out.
Composition by Eric Heberling and an unknown composer (the numbered tracks are mostly by the latter).

@Airy Fairy They did not cut this, it was never a Daggerfall track. This was the music test song for most games from 1995-1997ish for people to test their music card out on, which Bethesda happened to use throughout the 90s. The sound test was the "HMI module alpha-humana on approach to space station Mercury". I think both the sound and music tests were actually from Bethesda's Terminator Future Shock in 1995, but not entirely sure. :P

I feel like that was a tune for heroic character coming to your rescue and dispatching over powered monsters to save your life and he asked you if you are ok and helps you out of a trap. "hehe you are such a noob at this dungeon crawling stuff. Here let me show you how killing is done!" and he kills two monsters in a single blow of his greatsword and then mocks them for being too slow to get out of the way while he chops their heads off in casual manner. That song is meant to make you look like a noob and you have to level up to be him one day. Didn't seem like it belongs in the game but that's what I think when i hear it.

@Airy Fairy If you like that stuff check out the vince dicola training montage tune in rocky 4. That sounds a lot like this one. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z7KSZrCF0a_Wc2g.html Vince Dicola tune sounds more epic to me. Less badass and more struggle to overcome a challenging task.

@UCouJr25IJqnz-L6-6pGn11g "no, it is just the software default music that they use to make daggerfall overanalyzation is not cool". Wrong dipshit. It's to test the soundcard to see if you set up to work properly. Every game has this so you can check if the sound works. Its' a short clip you play and if you can't hear it something you set up wasn't configured correctly. In the old days of computers you actually had to read manuals and know what you are doing. Now about this tune: Bethesda was working on terminator at the time and most likely they just left that in for this game too as the test midi. It clearly doesn't belong in the fantasy genre because it stands out, but it sound cool. I was around when these were made so I know what I am talking about. I still have my original daggerfall pc box with manual and cd and everything. That makes me 100X cooler than you. You are jealous of my awesomeness.

I just figured out why I like Daggerfall so much. It's not just the music but the sense of atmosphere the music creates. That there is mystery hiding in every corner of the world. You want to explore the whole map but can't because you are so freaking tiny! When can we see a game as massive as this again with 90s-era graphics by an indie company that were huge fans of daggerfall like how space simulator fans are getting Star Citizen?

You should look up OnceLost Games. It's an independent studio with Ted Peterson and Julian Le Fay (people behind original Arena and Daggerfall). They are currently working on an old school openworld RPG game.

@@PlaskiJakDeska Thank you very much for that comment. I needed to hear it. I love open world games but I want that Daggerfall feel back. I don't care about how realistic the graphics are so much as that sense of going off in adventure and getting lost in massive mazes and dark caverns and the spooky atmosphere of hearing monsters in the dark creeping up around corners. (the haunted castle feel of not knowing what you will see around the corner or behind that door and being freaked out that it could kill you in 2 hits) There are other RPG like daggerfall like Dungeon master and wizardry series that I was into before Arena and Daggerfall but when Daggerfall came out I was blown away with the scale of this game. The overworld meant you could chill in the woods or explore unchartered regions and always without a moment of pause you felt like you were always alien trying to find direction from locals to get to where you needed and the danger of isolation was a factor because if you get lost you may never get to the quest items and deliver them. Whoever was behind this knew that they needed to make something you could never touch the edge of the map. (well in reality you can still do it but it would take so long as to be virtually pointless because even if you hit the edge you would never notice because of how much space you have in between regions) Also Daggerfall today is still more progressive in features too because it let the player create new classes which is something you don't see often in rpg. If someone can top it in scale and use budget visuals (I am happy even if the graphics are like Runescape level graphics lol) this would be my go to open world game. Bethesda can make the triple A ones, but what I want is massive scale budget company games. (Like what Elite Dangerous is to the space sim genre)

@@PlaskiJakDeska I searched for the company and they have a youtube account: kzfaq.info/love/PCtwmmm0YqSPZ2lDQG7xBA I subbed immediately. Let's hope these guys succeed in whatever projects they have in store. I also hope that maybe they can give us a space RPG equivalent to daggerfall. Like the popular Phantasy Star series does. (ie exchange swords with lightsaber type sword, and space magick with traditional elemental magick system of DnD fantasy worlds. I guess the thief classes would be replaced with droid hacking classes ie like what R2D2 is in star wars who acts as ship mechanic and door-unlocker)

I started with Oblivion as well, in 2006. Eventually after playing Oblivion I decided to try the earlier games. Luckily at some point around the time Skyrim came out, Bethesda released the elder scrolls anthology set which had all of the games in it. Arena and Daggerfall are incredibly hard and so different than later RPGs. I recommend watching some youtube walkthroughs before attempting them. If you can get the version of Daggerfall called "Daggerfall Unity" I highly recommend that fan MOD version because the graphics and combat mechanics are vastly improved. If you can get over the difficulty of Daggerfall, I think it's the best game in the series aside from Oblivion.

I noticed a Japanese audience forming especially because of Daggerfall unity making things more convenient, I'm hoping more notice this game in more than just Japan. I'm doing second language immersion so I can't possibly understand the culture from a native context but games like these I dearly hope might become a trend, they have Skyrim fully voice acted however not Oblivion neither Morrowind though there's fan translations of Morrowind to be found; Morrowind code patch has Japanese support.

Also look up the SCC1T2 soundfont which is the classic "General MIDI" or "Microsoft Synthtable" set of instruments used across the Windows95/98/XP era that came installed by default with the system. Nowadays, you have to go through additional work to get MIDI working. What a fucking shame. Sadly Linux is also doing this nonsense.

Plus daggerfall arena redguard and battlespire have nothing to do with what is now Bethesda and fallout 1 and 2 and new vegas (though it uses some fallout 3 tracks) obviously don't either. So really (again to me) Bethesda only really did great music with Morrowind's oblivion fallout 3 and Skyrim. Fallout 4 music is good but doesn't fit the game that well soo...

It's kind of a shame about the learning curve of this game. I played Morrowind back in the day, which got me hooked on the series. It wasn't until a few years ago I finally got the courage to give Daggerfall a try, and once I got over that initial hump of extreme confusion and looked at some guides and stuff, I can honestly say it's one of my favorite games of all time. Other people who can't muster the willpower to learn this game's systems/quirks are really missing out on something amazing.

Some tracks remind me of the excellent music in Ravenloft: Stone Prophet as well. Music in that game is offered in less quantity of tracks but each track lasts much longer which is nice listening to.
