Andrew Jackson called them "Miss Nancy" and "Aunt Fancy" , being nicknames for an "effeminate" man.

Interesting how we had our first gay president over a 150 years prior to our first black president
@HistoryNerd8087 жыл бұрын
To be honest, Buchanan would not have won if it had been known. Also, much easier to hide sexual preferences than race so it makes some sense actually.
@morgankingsley49927 жыл бұрын
Yeah that is true. It is also interesting how he is one of the worst presidents at the same time.
@HistoryNerd8087 жыл бұрын
Yeah, definitely one of the worst. He seemed to be just way in over his head with the drama around slavery going on and he had his head in the sand and didn't see it
@josephcarlisle19437 жыл бұрын
It shows tha sexuality doesn't really dictate the type of leader you are. The first openly gay canidate for president was a complete mess and this is coming from someone who is openly gay.

Sometimes I wonder what the country would be like had Fremont actually pulled it off. He didn’t seem to be as good as Abe Lincoln, but any republican winning might’ve sparked a civil war potentially, so maybe in an alternate timeline California adventure man is the greatest president of all time

The No Nothings or Know Nothings alienated to many people, Spanish, Irish, and French Canadians. Lincoln was anti-Catholic, he must have somewhat toned down his rhetoric for political reasons.

+Keith Hughes (HipHughes) Love these videos man, I'm like a kid in a candy store when I see you post a new one! You need to make videos discussing the administrations. I want to know what the hell happened during each administration leading to these elections. And put them in order in this playlist so we can watch it like a video text book! I've read that Millard Fillmore is usually regarded as the worst president ever, funny you say Buchanan is but don't give us anything more than he opposed secession and opposed war to prevent secession. That I would think would make a guy popular. Anti war and patriotic. From experience, I'll say Dub yah was the worse president ever.

How could the Know Nothing Party be a spoiler for Frémont in the South when Frémont only got 2% of the vote down there?
@gsketenchian5 жыл бұрын
I think the idea is that Fillmore and the Know Nothings took away the votes of the former Southern Whigs ("Cotton Whigs") who would have voted for the Republicans (as the de-facto successor of the Whig Party) but shied away from doing so due to the explicitly anti-slavery/abolitionist platform. So, former Southern Whigs who didn't agree with the Republicans for the above reason but also refused to vote for Buchanan and the Democrats would vote for the Know Nothings.

It would join the confedericy but would've been easily invaded. It probely have Jim crow laws until the civil rights act. But most importantly Castro would've never got into power preventing the Cuban missile crisis. Other than that not much would change besides having a nice and even 51 states.

Man, it's a good thing Fremont didn't win the 1856. He would not be as good as Lincoln during the Civil War, also the north would not have been as ready to face the South 5 years before the actual Civil War.

I have been trying to track down a newspaper article or perhaps a letter to a newspaper from the time of this election, that claimed that Fremont had Kit Carson murder the Mexican Mayor of Yerba Buena and his nephews near Sonoma. The source claimed to be an eyewitness from Fremont’s cap. Any ideas ?

Is the rumor that James Buchanan was gay a new thing? It would be interesting to see some political cartoons addressing that back then.
@goldwolf06068 жыл бұрын
I remember reading as a kid that he was engaged and his fiancée died. He ended up never marrying, instead having his niece be the First Lady during his administration. That letter hip hughs read made it seem as though he might have been gay though. Master Hip Hughes can verify...You have a masters in education hip hughs? Where did you get that gay letter? I hope it was a credible source. Not that being gay is wrong but "Defaming" a president posthumously is wrong man.
@hiphughes8 жыл бұрын
+Gold Wolf The letter is legit. Historian James Lowell Who has such books as lies my teacher told me has written about it before. You can do your own research, there are also letters from the wife of James Polk who refers to the effeminate nature of both men. And I don't know how it is defaming somebody to call them gay. But I understand your point

As a gay man I don't believe he was gay. He was engaged and asked her father for her hand in marriage. He refused, and she was found died from what was believed to a suicide. After this it's reported J.B. said he would never marry. Now if he did have a same-sex relationship wouldn't make him gay but bisexual. c
