@EngineAdventures

Cummins once found out that Detroit Diesel was doing this exact thing, developing engine mapping and such that it would produce less emission when doing the EPA testing, but running differently under normal conditions. Cummins brought this up to the EPA and they were told, "Detroit Diesel passes our testing". So Cummins did the same thing, and then got sued by the EPA for it.

Thing is… it was a cheat device that would detect an emissions test and the car would run completely different and emit clean SMOG passing emissions well within the standards. But when you take it out on the road and actually road-test it… The ecu would detect that you are on the road driving and run completely different and burn dirty… That’s how they actually achieved the fuel mileage they stated, and also passed the emission dyno test… nobody could understand… and that’s when EPA of California opened an investigation and started “road testing” the vehicles to put them in real life scenarios.. in turn, the vehicle knew when it was on a dyno being tested, but it did not know how to detect a “road test” emission test and would fail that test. That’s how they discovered the cheat devices.

After reading many articles, I think you forget to mention "the squeeze". Under VW's CEO who was hell-bent on beating Toyota to become the world's #1 automaker, European emissions were getting tougher and soon then-current VW diesel engines would require urea injection to meet new clean air regulations. However, VW upper management did not want to invest R&D retooling money to correctly update diesel engines. So the middle managers, feeling "the squeeze", ordered VW software engineers to design and install the cheating software.

It's also worth pointing out that, on a bench in Wolfsburg somewhere, the LNT worked as advertised, but when they brought it over here, the shitty quality of American diesel made the engine run rich more often, which tanked the fuel economy. The fact that they did the same thing in Europe where fuel is better and emissions rules favor diesels means that ultimately it doesn't matter and they cheated no matter how one examines the situation. As this video points out, so was basically everyone else, so 🤷

I’ve always believed VW was targeted because at the time they were being investigated, VW was overtaking GM as the number one auto maker in the US. At the time when VW was being punished there were companies like Mitsubishi that also admitted to doing the same thing but they barely had a presence in the US so it would be pointless to go after Mitsubishi.

@@corruption1724 yeah the issue was that the AdBlue Urea injection system needed to lower NOx (US NOx rules are strict) tanked performance and efficiency. It's also quite expensive relatively. And requiring people to fill another fluid isn't great for marketing.

In fact Mercedes is the most affected OEM of all from those EU regulations. They produce so many V8 vehicles each year and they don't have too many entry level sales figures to help them decrease the average emissions. And they are also being defined as the biggest manufacturers so they have to follow the strictest level. That's the reason they intentionally cut many beautiful V8 (and V12) AMG models and they aren't allowed to produce as many V8 cars as the market demands. And they also have to make smaller and quieter V8 Engines since 2015 at first place. Many said that there's corruption in EU. It's not about environment. Rumours said certain politicians hold shares of Ferrari. (Ferrari is defined as small OEM and they're not affected by regulations so much) Those coorrupted politicians are trying their best to hold down products from top end Mercedes and VW group. It's all about money.

I'm from the Balkans where 80-85% of cars are diesel powered, most of those being late 90's early 2000's models with super high mileage, like 500.000 miles. Diesels are fuel efficient but they do break, and when they do so does the wallet. In order to prevent those expensive repairs a lof of people had their dpfs, egrs, cats and whatever himders the air/exhaust flow in their cars removed. Ecu tuning of diesel cars is also very prevelant and that turnes them into black smokescreen deployers. Yeah the cars go quicker, run better and are more reliable but the results of all that are catastrophic. I live in a town of circa 130k inhabitants, we have about the same nimber of cars, no joke, most of them being old diesels. My town has the most poluted air in Europe along with the capital, without having close to any major factories in the town no more. Cancer is at an alltime high, yet people don't seem to care as long as they get to drive around on a budget which I understand since fuel is like triple the price it is in the US. Now I was never a "tree hugger" or concerned with global warming but, when your eyes burn in the morning when you walk out, and particles in the air make it hard to see, it's a problem. Now they supposedly made the the annual mto tests more strict which would mean that a huge portion of the cars wouldn't pass. There's a huge concern in the public but they'll probably find a way around it and still have mk 2 golfs running on bootleg fuel roaming the streets.

My 1971 Dodge Charger had a mechanical ignition and emissions requirements were just being introduced. The only requirement was that the engine pass an emissions test at idle. The regulators' assumption presumably was that emissions at idle correlated with emissions over the full range of operating conditions, so only one condition needed to be tested. The engineers had added a solenoid to retard the spark only at idle. Once the driver pushed on the accelerator, the solenoid disengaged and the spark advanced. So, assuming that there were no other design changes, the engine's emissions performance was the same as for the pre-solenoid versions, except at idle. In effect, this was an early modification to reduce emissions under test conditions (engine idling) to pass the test, but run with higher emissions under normal driving conditions. To the best of my knowledge, Chrysler Corporation was never punished for adding the solenoid to pass emission requirements under test conditions only. The mechanic was provided with instructions to set the timing and engine RPM at idle. The effect of the retarded spark was noticeable. I imagine that many mechanics figured out how to disconnect the solenoid after the adjustments were made. The advanced spark after the solenoid was disconnected would cause the engine to speed up, but the mechanic could readjust the idle speed to match what it was with the solenoid connected.

VW's emission-preventing NOx trap was an ingenious innovation. In exchange for losing two or three miles to the gallon (or 0.1-0.2 L/100 km more), it actually made the NOx filtration as effective as AdBlue, with none of the hassle, and at a fraction of the cost. But guess what VW did? The NOx trap only activated during testing. During driving, it was decided that extra MPG is more important than not poisoning all pedestrians around... That's what saddens me the most. It was a great technology, that was awfully misused. Its death brought with it such a domino effect, that it seems to have basically killed all internal combustion cars. Such a shame...

I had one of these. A 2010 Jetta TDI Sportwagen. I wanted that car for so many years. Mostly because they conveyed it as being an environmentally clean, but powerful car. It drove like a dream. I put so many miles on it, thinking I was reducing my footprint. Their level of advertising deception for many years was worth the extra punishment in my opinion. They lured in people who believe in reducing their footprint. It was the last time I ever trusted a company. At least they bought it back from me. It paid for my Forester… which will be a part of the payment of my next vehicle (Tacoma). As you can see, this is a big change. This is what happens when trust is lost. You left out the part where the 2009-2013 VW TDI cars, when driven gently, would accidently go into the emissions compliant software. One of the things the emissions compliant software did was not regenerate the DPF, which would fill up with soot, overheat, and crack. VW was tired of paying for warranty claims on the DPF / Cat, so they did a software update in 2014 to make sure the cars would never accidently go into the emissions compliant software when driven on the road. They applied this software to the older cars when brought in for service.

If I had to say to you what is the answer I would say massive bloodshed. I really would. I don’t really, honestly, deep down believe in political action. I think the system contracts and expands as it wants to. It accommodates these changes. I think the civil rights movement was an accommodation on the part of those who own the country. I think they see where their self interest lies, they see a certain amount of freedom seems good. An illusion of liberty, give these people a voting day every year so that they’ll have the illusion of meaningless choice. Meaningless choice that we go like slaves and say: “Joy I voted!” The limits of debate in this country are established before the debate even begins. And everyone else is marginalized and made to seem to be either communist or some sort of disloyal person…a kook…there’s a word. And now it’s conspiracy… see? They’ve made that something that should not be entertained for even a minute. That powerful people might get together and have a plan… Doesn’t happen! You’re a kook! You’re a conspiracy buff! Full disclosure: I work at Mercedes Benz. But I do have to come in and defend my employer a bit. Volkswagens software detected a test and switched modes based on that. That is quite obviously illegal. The software in some Mercedes cars would switch to a less clean mode in cold temperatures and didn't detect tests. The company states that this was to "reduce stress on the engine". Now whether that is true or it was just to safe AdBlue for the customers I don't know. But in most cases in which Daimler is sued, the ruling is not guilty. Most other manufacturers that got hit with lawsuits following diesel gate had similar software based on temperature, not that which detects the emissions test. Daimler also claims that their software complied with the law at the time and had been accepted in the admission process

That is the biggest saving VW was trying to get away when most just caved with AdBlue/urea which obviously the EURO5 required for anythibg except a car in operating temperature driving at a constant speed on the highway. Diesels were being pushed by governments because they supposedly polluted less. The general public bought them because they were quite powerful and kind of economic (especially in Europe). Turns out it was all bullshit and there's no free lunch. Now a similar thing is happening with EVs... Are we, once again, jumping with both legs into another quagmire with a huge issue in our hands in a decade or so? My question with EV’s will always be whether they can really be considered “green” when we still get the majority of electric power from fossil fuels, at least here in the US. I’m sure they’re more environmentally friendly than a normal gasoline car, but how much more really? I worry especially in places that have strained power grids like California that moving to electric vehicles will only exacerbate that as well.

@Kowen8714
@Kowen8714 2 жыл бұрын
@@TehCoD1KNifER15 the answer to that question, at least in my head, is that even though fossil fuels are being used to generate electricity there are still a few pros to using EVs: 1. The whole circle, from fuel to the power station to the transmission of power and charging the EV is still more efficient than burning fuels directly in cars. As far as I know fuels used in powerplants need less processing than diesel or petrol and powerplants themselves have an efficiency of over 90% while ICE has... 40%-50%? 2. The pollution is centralised which, if the government wills it, will make it easier to deal with. It's easier to deal with a single large exhaust pipe than thousands of smaller ones. 3. Even though fossil fuels are being used today in powerplants doesn't mean they won't be moving to better sources in the future. There are also alternatives. There really isn't any alternative to petrol in a petrol car (well, there's LPG, but it's a pain in the butt). As a car guy who still keeps a V8 e30 in his garage I do love the EVs we have. They need much less maintenance and there's kind of less to go wrong, the power is great, the comfort is great, the running costs are negligible, when compared to the power the car has. But it's not yet for everyone - I'm lucky to have moved to Norway 15 years ago and am lucky that I had a chance to work here and be able to afford a house in a small town which makes it easy to charge both cars at home during the night. Not everyone has it, so not everyone sees the same practicality. Another question is if batteries will be possible to recycle (truly recycle, not some 10% of their mass/volume or something like that). I guess we'll see. It's also a bit of a chicken vs the egg situation. Humans probably had similar issues when horses got replaced with horseless carriages - gas stations vs just grass, mechanics vs "it just heals", no soul vs is a live animal etc. etc.

So, the Clean Air Act of 2001, which went into effect in January of 2007, that change the diesel available at the pumps to a less energy dense, 1.5 times more expensive product, that inherently produced 30% less fuel economy, which caused the 2007 recession by the summer, was aimed directly at Volkswagens 2 liter TDI, because it, pre-Clean Air Act, managed to achieve 75 miles per gallon in the Jetta, while the Toyota Prius that the "scientists" at the EPA and policy makers had invested in so heavily was being beat by a less expensive car. Can I prove any of this, unfortunately no, but while climate change maybe real, man-made climate change is a lie. Climate change is a direct result of the difference in the tilt of the Earth in regards to the sun, which is measured annually by the drift of the Magnetic North Pole. Food for thought anyways.

Back about 1990 I had to move an exhaust gas analyzer. I had just received a large UPS that was not in use yet. I charged the UPS and loaded both into a new van. I powered up the analyzer and rigged the exhaust probe. At about this point my boss came out to ask WTH I was doing. When he heard he wanted in. We jumped in and did a baseline (i.e.per the state inspection. The cvan, having only a few thousand miles on it passed of course. But as soon as we started moving the emissions went way into the red. Any acceleration sent the hydrocarbons and CO up more than 10x the limit. Letting off the gas sent NoX way over the limit. Even at idle it was not passing any of the measures. The boss decided to change the oil and the plugs (the most common cheap fixes for a failed emissions test in the day). It made no difference. Ever since then I have been expecting that at some point somebody is going to realize that essentially no car on the road actually meets it's emissions targets. I say essentially only because there's always been a few electric cars and a few propane powered cars. Eventually this is going to come home to roost. And from what we could tell they're probably isn't an automaker in the world that hasn't been cheating on gasoline emissions.

So… the only way you cure that… death, bloodshed… I don’t advocate it… but I see that it’s really the only answer. -George Carlin

Early internal combustion engine cars had terrible reliability compared to what we have today. EVs already have decent reliability and they will potentially become much more reliable than ICE vehicles since they are much simpler - the battery is the only complex and potentially neuralgic part.

In 2015, my then girlfriend (now my wife) and I bought a 2012 VW Sportwagen TDI. Literally the very next day Dieselgate broke. 🙄 But we did eventually get a bunch of money from VW to make up for the lost value in the car. And we never planned on selling the car anyway. We kept it until a little less than a year ago when the turbo blew and sprayed pieces of itself into the intercooler and the intake (and maybe the engine itself?). With 212,000 miles on it, it wasn't worth spending $4K to $5K on a new turbo and intercooler, just to possibly find out that bits had maybe gotten into the engine and damaged it. So we scrapped it. We have a 2020 GTI now. Definitely an upgrade, although the fuel mileage isn't anywhere near as good.

@@noneyabizz8337 That's just not true. Most hybrids don't use lithium ion batteries, but rather nickel metal hydride batteries, which have been mass produced for much longer than li-ion and require less damaging resources. Furthermore, these batteries can get reused in other machines once they are no longer useful in a vehicle, as they still have some capacity left in them even after moderate degradation. And once Ni-MH cells are completely dead, they can be recycled. Even if they are not recycled, they are not as harmful as lithium ion batteries to dispose of in a landfill. As for lithium ion batteries, which are being used more often in new hybrids as well as in pretty much every full electric vehicle, they last even longer than Ni-MH. Like the former battery type, lithium batteries can be re-used in another device once they are no longer viable in a vehicle, and they too can be recycled. Sure, producing them requires rare earth minerals like cobalt and lithium which are produced in industries that have problems with unfair labor & pollution. But batteries, unlike fuel, are reusable and recyclable. Even with all of the downsides of battery production, fossil fuel production produces far more pollution, death & destruction per unit of energy than battery production. Drilling for oil, shipping it, refining it, all of these processes are extremely energy intense and harmful for the environment (oh and don't forget about oil spills!). Cutting your oil usage in half by driving a hybrid (or better yet, fully electric) vehicle definitely makes a small but positive difference in the world even if it requires batteries.
