Synopsis:
Cheng Shao Shang is a young girl who was forced to grow up alone after most of her family had to leave to fight in a bloody war. Thus she becomes stubborn and untrusting. She fends for herself in a town populated by people like her, who have been left behind by the war.

I liked the empress wishing that they never meet in the next life, she was bold enough to let the emperor know that her life with him was not fulfilling.

Really, she married someone else husband and expected to have a fulfilling life, give me a break though. She was an obligation that was forced on the Emperor. She should have shown boldness in rejecting, her uncle's arrangement for power.

@@beverley1962ify If I remember correctly though, didn’t she lose her father relatively young and was her uncle’s ward? I think she made the best of a bad situation and at least never treated the first wife badly. She admitted her son was too much like herself - a pleaser with a soft and easily influenced heart. She did finally learn to live for herself after Shaoshang inspired her, but by then it was just for five years of illness. Personally, I don’t see how her life was that bad. I think the emperor did love her and she and the other wife treated each other with great respect and sisterly affection. Actually one of the best plural marriages I’ve seen depicted in a drama.

@@beverley1962ify she didn’t have any choice. The Xuan clan needed to set a marriage treaty with the current emperor as proof that they would help him take over the throne. Her and her siblings were orphans taken in by her uncle. The uncle clothed, fed, and gave them an education. Madam Wen (Empress’s cousin) could not marry the current emperor because they shared the same grandmother. So only the empress, who was the eldest of the orphans could. Rejecting a marriage that set a treaty would mean she does not respect the choices her elders make for her since back then, elders chose your spouse or agreed to your choice if the person was worthy to them. What’s sad is that she knew he had a lover. Yet she still chose to enter a marriage where their love was respect for each other. She’s human. She wanted a marriage filled with love and affection, but she knew that relationship wouldn’t go to her in that life.

@@lena_nguyen17 she chose to obey her uncle's arrangement. If someone sexually assaulted you, you didn't have a choice, but you have the choice to report the incident and seek justice. Saying that a person doesn't have a a choice is too ignorant 🙄 From the time you give in, that's your choice. Not having a choice is like someone being forced into slavery or prostitution. You really need to get your thinking straight. 🤔

@@beverley1962ify hold up, this is a fictional story. I don't think you understand historic Asian culture anyways since back then your elders had power in your life and her uncle is her elder taking care of her who she must listen to. Belief during the time was that if disobeyed your elders that cared for you, it was considered sinning. But you cannot compare something fictional to sexual assault. Some people do not have the choice to report the assault to high authorities in fear of being ridiculde by society or people close to them. Most sexual assault cases are done by someone close to the victim. Most victims don't have good people around them to give them comfort. Even, all around the world it is hard to gain justice from sexual assault. If many murders aren't properly put to justice, do you think sexual assulters are? Open your eyes.

I like that not all the words the Empress Xuan Shen'an said were happy and reassuring. she carried some level of despair, guilt and resentment to her death bed because she was not very outspoken from the beginning. I also like that the Emperor knows she's not trying to be hurtful, she's only being sincere about her feelings for the first time in their time together. he doesn't hold her last words against her or resent her for saying them even after the kindness and love he treated her with. I like that a lot about the Emperor, by the way; he doesn't expect kindness to be repaid from anyone. as for Empress Xuan, I don't blame her for saying that she didn't want to meet him in her next life. in the end, she's clinically depressed and they all know that and they all respect it too. she didn't die in pain and if saying these things eases her grievance then none of them, especially the Emperor, would hold it against her. it's true family love and I love the subtlety it's portrayed with ❤️

The Empress' last words probably echoes a lot of women of their era. Her wish to stay in the mountains sounds peaceful and free. Who wouldn't want that? I bet like most woman in the harem she had to do a lot of things to protect, and survive in an era that classes you as an other based on your gender.

She's not a sitting duck by any means. For her to survive as empress, despite not having any true familial support (I mean, she's an orphan), she had to have cunning. She mentions how she and Concubine Yue were involved in struggles, that led to the death of each other's children. No one is innocent. I think what makes her a truly wonderful character is that she is so complicated but despite the struggles that life has thrown her, including this marriage, she went all in. And now, she's ready to completely let go.

Shen’an was my favorite character in this drama. She was the mother that both shaoshang and ling buyi needed and they loved her dearly as well as her. I cried my eyes out listening to her.

Because she knew that although he loved her he was never in love with her. He loved her because of the circumstances that brought them together and how she handled it but he was already in love with Consort Yue from his youth

Even she knew that the emperor loved her his heart truly belonged to concubine Yue. Because of machinations of her distant family(she is orphan) Marchioness Ruoyangs father etc she was forced to marry the emperor. Because they helped him in the war she a gentle, kind very intelligent girl forced to become empress against her will. She does not have any cunningness, wilful, subtleties and shrewdness as concubine Yue. She even admits to emperor she can’t live in cut throat world as his empress because everyone only wants use her and her position even her daughters.

Writers gotta stop orphan ing Jiang Cheng (crown prince). I'm out here sobbing. It's fine. That boy deserves some happy roles but he can act out a spectrum!
