I finish up the enclosure build by adding the window. I decided to purchase a cheaper orange acrylic to use in my enclosure build. Before installing it, I decided to do a test to see if the laser would allow the light to pass through. The acrylic is blocking the blue light and I was even able to cut it.

Thanks for the demonstration. I'm gathering stuff to build an enclosure and debated about the orange acrylic. I'm going to add it now to the project. Still will depend upon my glasses but anything to reduce the amount of light escaping will be added protection. Thanks for sharing and taking the time to produce these videos. Great stuff.

Thanks for the thoughtful and well-made video. I know I am late to the party, but I want to point out a couple of possibilities, including a simple way to test this further. There is a possibility of something part way between pure transparency, and 100% blockage of the laser light. And that is a partial blockage in which you can cut it with enough persistence, but some leakage is still getting through. In regard to this remember it doesn’t take nearly as much to damage your eye as it takes to cut the acrylic. So this simple test should reveal how effective the non-certified orange acrylic is. Run a “cut test” on both a sheet of black acrylic and a sheet of the translucent orange acrylic, with the exact same spread of varying cut speeds / power settings, and the exact same thickness of acrylic. Look at the different square cut attempts that were run at different speeds / different power settings, and see which ones punched all the way through on the black, and which ones didn’t. Compare that to the same squares on the same test on the orange acrylic. If the orange and black are showing the same degree of cut versus non-cut, then it indicates the orange is preventing laser leakage just as well as the black is.

@TheClackShack
@TheClackShack Жыл бұрын
There is a "science" reason that orange works best for blue light. It has to do with all the colors of the rainbow and which colors are allowed to pass through. If the color is clear, all light passes through, if the color has any blue in the spectrum, it will allow light to pass through. There are some science folks out there that can better explain it. Here is a pretty good explaination... www.phillips-safety.com/2013/09/visible-light-laser-safety-glasses/

I used long coil springs, you can see them on either side of the door. They hold in both up and down location due to the placement. Yes, the vacuum table is still in play. I did make the bottom vacuum chamber lower on the base during the upgrade and it now has a 1 inch compartment as opposed to the old 3.5 inch height.

I know you wouldn't want to waste a pair of glasses, but would be interesting to see how running the same test on the glasses would turn out. That said, it looks like certified glass from what I assume is a reputable company looks to be roughly twice the cost. If this is something being used often, it seems like it'd be worthwhile to spend the extra money once to both know you're safe and know that it's okay to use without glasses. Still waiting on my 20w xTool to be shipped but loving the videos!

I know I am a little late, but went over to the community page to find the poll and try to get information. Did you put together the video you were thinking about in this video? I am just starting about 6 months into my laser journey and trying to get as much information on how to sell to pay for my toys. As always great video and an awesome build. I am waiting for my extension rails to come before starting to build my enclosure. The products I am interested in making and selling are 24 to 26 inches long and I need the extension to make this work. Thanks again.

You mentioned adding the tint for cleaning, etc, did adding it make any difference to the protection? A 10W D1 laser has a power density equivalent to 1,500 suns. That means the spot where the laser hits the material is 1,500 times brighter than if the material were laid out in the sun at noon at the equator. Let's just work through an example. Let's say that the orange plexiglass blocks 80% of the laser light. That would be like running your laser at 80% and the acrylic would still absorb 80% power--enough to cut the plexiglass--but it would also allow 20% or 300 suns through the material. So, I don't think you can make the case that since you can cut plexiglass that the protection is as good as OD4 goggles which block 99.99% of the laser light, letting only 0.01% through the goggles. For a 10W D1, OD4-rated material will only pass about 1/6th of a sun, which is pretty safe. To know if it works for sure, you'd need a meter to measure how much laser light is passes through your orange plexiglass to know it's as safe as OD4 goggles.
@TheClackShack
@TheClackShack 2 жыл бұрын
Good point. I am assuming the measurements are at the focal point of the beam? I am only concerned about the incidental reflected light. I still have the stock cover on the machine and plan to leave it. Especially surfaces with low reflectivity, I wouldn't see how 100 percent of the beam would be directed toward the window.
@rosswille4336
@rosswille4336 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheClackShack You are right! You've been very conscientious about wearing your OD-4 goggles even though the chance of getting a high reflection from your laser beam is very low. You wear your goggles because you value your eyes--even if the probability of eye damage is slight. So, I just wanted to point out that the orange plexiglass may not be as safe as wearing OD-4 goggles. Safe enough to stop wearing goggles? That's a personal decision. But, as you said in the video, it's better than what you had before (and definitely better for the cats and other critters who visit your shop). I really enjoy your videos.
