I love how Paul's solo has a clean sound, John has really crazy, distorted one and George is kind of a mix of both clean and distorted.

I just like how each solo reflects their individual personalities in a way. Paul's are fine and sophisticated, George's are well thought out and complex, and John's are raunchy and loud. At least at the time.

One of the great solo's. It was improvised on the spot in the studio and after a brief rehearsal they layed it down live in one take: "The idea for guitar solos was very spontaneous and everybody said, ‘Yes! Definitely’ - well, except for George, who was a little apprehensive at first. But he saw how excited John and Paul were so he went along with it. Truthfully, I think they rather liked the idea of playing together, not really trying to outdo one another per se, but engaging in some real musical bonding. Yoko was about to go into the studio with John - this was commonplace by now - and he actually told her, ‘No, not now. Let me just do this. It’ll just take a minute.’ That surprised me a bit. Maybe he felt like he was returning to his roots with the boys - who knows? The order was Paul first, then George, then John, and they went back and forth. They ran down their ideas a few times and before you knew it, they were ready to go. Their amps were lined up together and we recorded their parts on one track. You could really see the joy in their faces as they played; it was like they were teenagers again. More than anything, they reminded me of gunslingers, with their guitars strapped on, looks of steely-eyed resolve, determined to outdo one another. Yet there was no animosity, no tension at all - you could tell they were simply having fun. One take was all we needed. The musical telepathy between them was mind-boggling." - Geoff Emerick
@anitapalmer2713 жыл бұрын
Yes, Emerick used a pretty appropriate word; 'telepathy', about how closely attuned they were, especially in this guitar solo ending. I play keyboard, and recently decided to figure out the notes they play, to see what I could do with it, playing it on keys. Once I got through all nine segments, it's much easier to see on keys, ..( probably guitar also, but I don't think I'll be learning it on guitar anytime soon)..how, as one would play their line, it's surprising how often the next one would continue from the same note, or one directly up or down the scale. They used mostly the same pentatonic scale, and looking at how they each continue with so many varied rythmic approaches, that result in so many different sounds, from mainly those ten or twelve notes, is a great example to show how notes are used rythmically can make all the difference for students who are learning to improvise blues and rock. When I was less experienced, trying to pickout rock, or blues piano parts, even though I already knew blues and pentatonic scales, they often sounded more complicated than they were, but they were played so fast, that I thought it was more complicated. The speed at which Paul, George, and John play most of their solos also gave me the same impression. So, beginners, just build up those callouses!🎸

BEST GUITAR SOLO EVER
@gautamkotwal69157 жыл бұрын
First, the one drum solo from Ringo (with a lot of pedal pressing) Then, 3 rotations of double bars played in this order: Paul, George, John. Notice their styles: Paul (Top Left): string-bending, stingy (like in "Taxman") George (Top Right): technically advanced, melodic slides John (Bottom): heavily distorted, jarring (like in "Revolution")

I’ve listened to this song countless times and I just realized all of the three guitarists played these solos. I always thought they were all George in different takes edited together. Wow, I am dumb. This makes the song so much better however, especially since I’ve also learned it was done in one take.
@BeatlesCentricUniverse6 жыл бұрын
Not dumb. Understandable. And yes, Geoff Emerick said it was done in one take. Amazing!

We continue to learn how the magic was created... I didn't realize how small the chunks were fore each part (I thought they just did one longer part each but they all took small pieces consecutively)... in one take yet!

Michael G that is absolutely right, and it makes the song so much more amazing than it already was.

Some twit still owes me a buck (from 27 years ago, lol) because he was certain that it was Clapton and or Hendrix sitting in. He wouldn't hear of it, the moptops rocking out like that. And he was a very good guitarist, himself. The perfect end to the Beatles. They went out at the top of their game, and I'm glad they didn't stay together long enough to jump the shark and become a parody of themselves. They have been, are, and will forever be, my favourite band.

Talk about an "Aha!" moment! I've been playing guitar for more than 30 years and have come across guitar solos (or parts) that I subconsciously labeled as "untouchable" or "undoable." For me, the solos in "All Along the Watchtower" may as well be a Charlie Parker riff. This is a prime example of what I'm talking about. Never in a million years would I even attempt to figure this out. And yet, here we are. Turns out I have the same notes on my guitar that the Beatles did! Thanks so much!!

Back years ago when this became common knowledge that they had taken turns in tandem, I just knew it was Paul- George-- John, in that order, because it fit their style.
