Once again, a racing facility goes belly up…. For me, the loss of Raceway Park in Englishtown NJ was an eye opener. Soon, I guess we’ll just have to go back to the old days of racing on the streets. Tracks like these gave racing enthusiasts a place to safely enjoy their sport. I guess that the authorities have forgotten that lesson. Good luck this season Clay, and thank you for your post!

@@FightinAggieFarmer you would think texas of all places would have enough room to be far enough away that it would not pester people, I know all the bodies from the coast and huge population and industry growth, but still, the west has miles and miles of land you think it would be the last place for a track to close. nothing can be taken for granted though, if one of the buissiest facilities like parris auto in cali that has all kinds of racing multiple times a week can be put in jepardy, if they could turn around and change the surface of a state fair so its only good for parking and harness horse racing like they did with the mile at the indiana state fair, and the fact that the indy motor speedway has a 10 pm curfew on it for activites nothing can be taken for granted, I mean really the whole reason speedway is on the map and they have a time curfew the mecca and vatican city of racing, and its not like we are building tracks left and right in indiana either, sure we got land but all kinds of small communities keep croping up and urban sprawl is a real problem, we also got to have places to grow food and they are building houses on good farmland let alone the loss of habitat for animals, we did get one new track in 2021 at the marion county fairgrounds in indy, but we lost a dirt track and a drag strip, and nearly terre haute the last dirt half in the hoosier state that isn't a horse track, and nearly I think the oldest track in indiana, montpilier as the owner got too old to run it, the community stepped up and got it going again, but many of the tracks they have to cooperated with each other so they dont cut into buisness, and several share promoters and crew, so they dont canableize each other, like gas city and montpelier, or southbend and plymeth, will share classes kokomo also has cooperation, so the community in racing is if nothing else tight knit, but I feel you we got few drag strips anymore here, but still I am blessed to live close to eldora and its not too far to indy, and half way down is montpelier, anderson and gas city, and not too far from butler in michigan if I want to go there, and winchester is easy to get to, just a stright line trip out of fortwayne south though the swiss amish communities like geneva and berne.

And I always supported other events there with family and friends.I raced at all three ,E-town ,Atco, Island Drags ( AKA Great Meadows and the Patch) also A dozen other as a hobby and still to this day a avid race fan. Generally it seems all forms of auto racing is taking a hit massive grandstand s are never filled, I’m hopeful that things will turn around and don’t have the answers. Maybe it is a combination of the expense ,advertising, or the Internet. I heard some people say they get there fill by watching racing on the net,,,,go figure?

There's far more people at NHRA and dirt track events than at Nascar races now except for I think I heard that North Wilkesboro was sold out and Bristol with the dirt on it was close to being sold out. I like real cars like they use to race. It came down to who's skill was better or reaction time in drag racing.

@Daniel Quackenbush I'm in South Carolina and we've lost some of ours too. However, we still have a fair number of tracks that are fun to go to. I went to Screvens Speedway in Sylvania Georgia before the pandemic and they have like 5 different tracks, campground and a real restaurant. Plus they know how to run a track. It was as smooth as silk and didn't take all night. It's approximately 2 1/2 hours from where I live but other than it being cold as it was in January, it was awesome and exciting. They had a big Sprint car race and a big Super Late Model race. The Sprint cars were racing on their track and the Lat Models were racing on their track. There were driver's from 37 states and 3 provinces in Canada. I've never seen that many race cars at one time, ever!!

That is a sad deal. Before I started the video, I thought the reason for the closure was gonna be housing development. Or some new housing development recently built nearby had their home owner's association pressure local government into closing the racing facility down, due to "noise". That's usually what happens to many racing facilities. Cleetus McFarland's facility known as "the Freedom Factory" is now under threat of a new housing development that was approved to be built right next door. It's high time these historic racing facilities get the respect they deserve. They were here FIRST, and everyone knows it.
@xPr1m3
@xPr1m3 Жыл бұрын
Something to note is the Freedom Factory literally borders Bradenton Motorsports Park. Bradenton is often a venue of very big pro mod and radial/small tire racing; The world series of promod was hosted there a few weeks ago. The Freedom Factory is cool, but for drag racing this could also put pressure on BMP, as they run races every weekend.

Even a drag strip barely lasted 10 years in my area, it is wanted to be gone now and yes there was housing nearby. The problem was these people illegally bought the property from the state or county who just want to make another permanent RV park that the mobile RVs are to not really move unless you brought your own in that 95% do not need to do moving from there to a warmer similar park in the winter for 99% of the people mainly retired people that almost 100% of the people do not have residency in the other state. The water in that area is tapped thanks to the first park expanding in mid 2010's and now they want to make another park that should not exist.

It’s the right thing to do and gives respect to all the history, than a Stalgia, people that I’ve had the highest of highs and the lows of Lowe’s, you name it, at the various tracks, whether it be Phoenix, Memphis…. I do know that they really need to start adding tracks like Tulsa or something if these tracks are gonna go away…. Because there are some places that I’ve seen across the country that have been purchased and they’re putting a lot of work into them so just saying… I’m glad Chicago is back at least, that’s a start Love what you do play. This track means a lot to me too, when my first national event on a pro nitro team here

Sad, another track closing down. We had a drag track here in Salt Lake City called Rocky Mountain Raceway. The owners sold the property to developers for of all things WAREHOUSES! Now we have the problems of illeagal street drags. If you have a track near you FIGHT for it to stay operational.

Places come and places go but when the places were a place, memories happened and lives were changed because of it.. only thing is you just cant let the end of the place be the end of what the place stood for.. keep it fast and keep it safe so our kids kids can be able to get those same chills we get when we get pressed back in that seat with a smile ear to ear..

If you go look at a map for this "Intersection" It does not enter the Race Complex at all, it clips a far corner of the parking lot that they call access control and you loose around 4 to 5 parking spots. The intersection does not infringe any place else on the maps provided by the state on the race complex. it loos like the goal is to turn this into a huge casino complex. Nothing on the other side of the freeway other than industrial and those run during the weekdays.

I love everything you mentioned Clay, thank you for speaking the truth. All for an overpass. WTH? I've been a student more than 5 times at the old Bondurant school (now Radford). Anyone who bleeds racing oil know how much that entire complex has meant to motorsports. Arizona is going to lose a major attraction for visitors and millions of dollars in revenue. All for an overpass. Talk about ridulous. People need to step up and stop letting racing facilities be turned into warehouses, highway overpasses, and housing developments. The motorsports community can no longer just sit silently while our historic facilities get demolished.

The Tribe put out renderings 3 or 4 years ago when they penned the deal with the Phoenix Rising soccer crap, showing the future of the land. Nice big soccer stadium and no more racing facilities. They are just finishing out the lease agreements and tearing it all down. Fate was sealed years ago by the land owners deciding the tracks weren't in their future.

So sad first we lost Speedworld, to now what was previously called Firebird Raceway to Wildhorse pass closing. Now we have to take our cars to Tuscon if we want to race at all, and we will make that trek when the time comes. Just a shame the all mighty dollar wins again!

I live in SE Texas and last year Houston Raceway Park announced it will no longer be the site for the Spring Nationals. Over the last several years the area has undergone a lot of development. Logistics warehouses, that’s right folks shipping warehouses. I’ve never attended the races at WHP but have watched all the NHRA nationals and the Drag Boat races that were televised. While watching the races this past weekend I’m like why are you shutting down a great facility like WHP? It’s Sucks what is happening to our country. Thanks Clay for sharing

It's said that the water in Firebird Lake was faster than elsewhere. Has something to do with it's density being not connected to a river system bringing in fresh water on a regular basis.

That's the place I seen my first live drag race. I was 13 years old and my older brother and a family friend brought me in 1993. I am deeply saddened by the closing of this track. I have a lot of fun memories there. It was the track I brought my son for his first drag race at 4 years old 6 years ago. I have pictures of you and him last year. I truly hate the idea of this track closing and I will take no part in the destruction of the track or building of the freeway in the future as it is what I do for a living. That's the last drag race track that I know of in the Phoenix area. 😢😢😢

No more Nitro School with Allen there either. His voice always reminds me of a day at Firebird / Wildhorse. Always coming to see you race from the blue truck to the Parts Plus sponsor. They left Tucson where the warm ups were at one time two decades ago and took it to Chandler. Just too much urban spral for race tracks. I was almost born at the Milwaukee Mile decades of USAC are long left behind.

What a shame. Attending an AHRMA race at Firebird is what led to us moving to AZ years ago. First Beeline Dragway, then our local track, Speedworld, now WHP. All for more over-development we don't need.

I raced there on Friday nights for nearly 20 years back when it was Firebird International Raceway. I went there once after it became Wild Indian Pass, it was a nightmare, I never went back. They completely ruined it. I also went to Bondurant Driving School back in 1993. I have the plaque from that on the wall behind my desk.

I hate it that I'm not going to be there this year but I'll always remember last year when I got to meet you and see you go to the final round. It was so close too. I hope you guys go back to the final this year and get that big win light. This old hillbilly will be rooting from the couch as always. Hopefully see you in Ennis this fall when you're closer to home. I'm hoping to bring my dad out with me. He's going to be 80 in May and I'd love for us to go to another big event. He used to take me to Byron dragway when I was a little kid and I fell in love with drag racing. I got to see a lot of legends before they were actually legends.
