Atlassian has made a bold move by announcing at TEAM 24 that they will be merging Jira Software and Jira Work Management into a unified platform simply called Jira. Could this signify the end of agile as we know it?

To be fair, Jira has defined Agile in many ways, which is not at all represented in Scrum or Kanban for example :) As far as I am concerned, Scrum is dead, or rather people called out that Scrum is naked and is just a process without any actual methodology so it is useless unless you have a methodology on top of it. Scrum also does not fit in an organization as a whole, as it is a development process for single teams only. I think this is an issue for all Atlassian Platform owners that we always must be front and center to lead the work processes within our organizations. If we don't then people will continue requesting that we build Frankenstein monsters :) As for the concern that there are fewer ways to lead or guide the users in company managed projects, that has been a problem for a long time, as Atlassian is allowing customizations even in company managed projects. This will just increase as I see it, and it will be a continuous challenge for us to balance structure and organization with freedom to do whatever you want for the users.

The first I thought when they announced it was "hey there is Jira from before Greenhopper was bought by Altassian". I'm curious to know what will happen, but agree that for those that don't like or want rules, it is going to be a mess and will take a while to wrap your head around. For those that don't know, Greenhopper was a plugin (yes first plugin, then addon now app) to add agile capabilities to Jira.

I'm personally excited for new ways of work. Scrum/Agile has been around for a while and I'm not 100% it's the best way.

When will this be available? On the website it says "If you currently have a Jira Software subscription, the new Jira is available to use today with no changes to pricing." but I still see the old interface.

Atlassian said 2-3 months. . .granted that was 1.5 months ago. I'm hoping before the end of Summer!

The merging of Jira Work Management with Jira Software does in no way contribute to "the end of Agile". It doesn't explain why Capital One laid off so many Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches in 2023. There are so many other factors in play in the broader arena than Atlassian putting Jira the way it was before.

I would agree that Agile is slowly dying, but maybe this was the last nail on the coffin?

@@ApetechTechTutorials It's not even a nail. But I think we are moving past Agile in defining "how we do work". And Jira should adapt accordingly if it is to survive.

@@robertwen-releaseteam6820 I hate to agree with Bob, but this in no what "kills" agile. Jira was Agile adjacent till they brought on Greenhopper. Just offering more options by returning JWM to Jira doesn't harm Agile.
