We had a problem with a Honda dealership and they pretty much told us to stick it. My younger brother wrote a formal letter to the Japanese headquarters and it took less than a week for the local dealership to beg us to come and pick up the $5000. check they overcharged us. They were very respectful and the dealer owner's hand was shaking as he got us to sign off that we were now satisfied. I heard that dealer was going to lose the right to buy cars from Honda if they could not satisfy us. True story.

Right on. I had the same problem with a Lexus dealer on Certified used Rx350. CA Dealer stonewalled me on warranty issue. Lexus of America (in Los Angeles area) backed the dealer. I said “Give me the phone number to Lexus Headquarters in Japan. I am certain that they have a different philosophy.” Got a call back the next day from Lexus Corporate (Los Angeles) that the dealer was ready to work with me. I am familiar with Japanese culture, so I was gambling on that.

definitely, so difficult to get stuff fixed when the ECU is not complaining. I went already 7 times with a car that doesn't run well on regular fuel(knocking, likely igniting fuel to early, high fuel consumption. giving rather loud rattling noise at medium-low engine load). i gave up. I just put premium fuel in it. Car is designed to run on regular octane gasoline, but it can't run on it. I just can't find a mechanic here that understands the electronics of modern cars.

@@basbass429 I had that problem with a 2001 Ford Ranger 3.0. It ran great on premium. But if you put regular gas, it would ping, and knock like crazy. I ended up getting rid of it, and now I have 04’ Tacoma 4x4. Runs like a top.👌

This is a known "issue" with these 5th Gen 4Runners. It's an old engine, but still bullet proof. I've heard on the forums that the noise goes away after a very long break in period. Mine is new, so can't confirm. But we're all aware of it and these things are still running well beyond 300,000 miles on the odometer and being driven through some of the worst terrain and road conditions. If you are a 5th Gen 4Runner owner, don't lose sleep over it. This issue has been beat to death on the forums. Everyone hears it, but not a single person on the net or a single Toyota rep has been able to identify even one instance, anywhere, of this being an issue. Remember, the 5th gen 4Runner is from 2009! Old, but reliable.

1. Timing chain engines will always produce more noise than belt 2. Direct injection engines tend to make alot of noise as well

@Jom James yep at their head office. That’s what we did with VW when the dealer wasn’t being accommodating. They offered compensation and pushed the matter themselves i.e the dealers have scrutiny and they also offered us a courtesy car from enterprise for a few weeks, this is great as the dealers usually fob off a VW UP and you can’t get insured if you are under a certain age so with the hire car they paid £1000 a month and we got it for 3 weeks and I could drive it. Our local dealers are useless twats hence we went straight to VW. It’s not really an issue with Audi or BMW here unless you have an awful company running the dealer network.

My 2017 4Runner SR5 has always made the same exact noise. It's especially pronounced when it's cold. I look forward to the update on your customer and his experience. I definitely plan on taking mine in to the dealership but would like to have more information to back it up. Thank you, Scotty

The noise is normal. I've heard it goes away after a very long break-in period. Remember, this engine is OLD. But it's bullet proof.

It’s always “normal operation“ on any vehicle that is under the factory warranty. That’s standard protocol for dealerships these days. The manufacturers don’t want to pay for their screw ups anymore. There’s absolutely nothing “wrong” with your vehicle until the warranty is expired. Then all of a sudden, your car is a rolling pile of crap, waiting to implode in on itself and needs $4k worth of repairs. But don’t worry, the dealership can have it ready for you in 2 days, OR they can give you a “great deal” on trading in your tired jalopy for a new model lol!

The mechanics don't get paid to fix cars now they get paid to just stand there and look professional and if they do repairs then its just minor work.I know this because i am a Salesman at a new dealer. I go to the back and always try to upgrade the customers to a new car while they wait for there "free oil change"

Yep! Comes with a 100,000km warranty and it’s fine at 99,999kms but needs thousands of dollars of repairs the next day at 100,001kms!

Toyota took care of me...my torque converter blew out on my 2014 Camry and they fixed it for free outside of my warranty

@@thomashaas5965 it depends on the dealership. My aunt purchased a new 1998 Camry off the lot in full, in 1998. She took it in for regular maintenance and every time she did, something happened to go wrong afterwards. We dont go to toyota anymore. Her car no longer has "problems." 22 years later the only major repair is we changed out her radiator.

Maybe the engine is meant to run on premium and the owner is using regular. Engines will knock if you use lower octane than recomended

under load not at idle I have had many GM vehicles that would knock and using premium fuel always solves it (going back 35 years or more). I know on cars that are suppose to run on 87 octane that means something else is wrong that can be fixed but premium fuel always fixes knock on acceleration.

32 year Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada veteran, Quality Control technician here. Toyota Motor Corp (Japan) gave the keys to all North American production and engineering to a new company, Toyota Engineering Manufacturing North America in 2003. That's where it started, I recall a conversation with a TEMA guy, ex- GM, who told me that spending on quality is a waste if you're selling cars. An exceptional company once, no longer.

My engine kind of makes a noise when I first start it but goes away after it warms up. I think maybe it's an exhaust leak, but would it really go away after the engine warms up? Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi

Keep doing what you're doing Scotty. If more techs like you would speak out about some of these engineering disasters & poor reliability we would eventually get better made cars. It's a shame that we spend all this money for a car we think will outlast the payments, and then we wind up paying more for repairs!

That ticking is 100% normal. It’s called the taco tick and every 4.0 v6 engines do it.

@@jakep111 Yes. My 2004 4runner 4.0 v6 does it and my 2019 4runner 4.0 v6 does it. All my coworkers Tacoma’s make the same noise. It’s literally called “taco tick”. The dealer says it normal for a reason.

Sounds exactly like the ongoing problems I’ve had with my mazda 3 and dealership also says “oh that’s normal” or “it’s on bulletin but not recall”.

Hey Scotty , love your videos , maybe you could help me with my 2017 Camry with the 6 speed trans . When I leave in the morning there's a tick sound, from under the car when it shifts thru the first couple gears , doesn't always do it but mainly when the car is cold . Is that something to address or can I ignore it ? Thanks for the great info and entertaining videos .

I've got the 2.7 liter 4 cyl. And I've got the death rattle when it's cold outside. Sounds like valve clatter. Doesn't go away when engine warms up.

Piston skirts are too short on these new engines, a lot of them rattle when cold due to lack of piston area.
