It's really sad that in just a handful of years, nobody will remember this place and so many kids will never know what a pleasure it was to browse the aisles, play the game demos, etc., like i did as a kid :( RIP

That was back when all the factories you see photos of from urban explorers, were up and running, and you didn't need to be an Elon Musk to afford a place of your own.

Leverage buyouts are essentially a company buys a business with imaginary money that will eventually materialize from profits they'll make from said business. It's a real last resort as if they mess up, everyone loses. But I'll miss Toys R Us, We only had one near me in Brent Cross, London for years, so it was a birthday treat going there.

Most of my childhood trips to Toys R Us were for birthdays as well. I would usually go there and spend all the birthday money that I got. A few times we went there to buy a video game that I had actually managed to save enough money to buy. Toys R Us that had the biggest selection of video games when I was a kid. I can still picture all the NES, SNES, and Sega Genesis games 😔

The LBO essentially lets the buyer use what they're buying as the collateral for the loan. That shit should be illegal as all hell. Another factor with TRU, when I worked for them years ago *like 94-2000* they had a policy of trying to own the buildings their stores were in. That way, no rent, which is a huge expense for any retailer. When these sharks who bought them, one of the first things they did was sell all the property and make the stores pay rent to new landlords. Same crap that was done when 'new owners' looted Mervyns and drove them out of business.

THANK YOU for being one of the first KZfaqrs to actually do your homework and explain the REAL reason they're in the situation. If only they hadn't been purchased in 2005 with all that debt on the books they'd be fine with a little dip in sales like you said.

there's still a possibility- albeit small one, someone can buy part of the remaining assets after the debts are paid off to potentially run a smaller version, but it wouldn't be nationwide.

@bigevilworldwide1 I bet Sears may be doing that. While they are currently closed down due to the Coronavirus, they may file for bankruptcy (again) very soon. I think they might skip the liquidation process. I imagine they may just keep the doors shut and sell their merchandise to different companies.

I have lots of great memories from Toys-R-us as a kid but every trip there as an adult has just been so awful and painful. The thought that this whole store was just for toys was what made it so magical to go to as a kid for me.

i fully agree. every time in the last 5 years ive gone there, every single time what I want is either not in stock, not sold there, or sold out. So upsetting that stuff like Transformers gets 1 small section on one isle, with no stock, and star wars, which IS NOT SELLING AT ALL, gets like 4 to 5 full isles. Come on... Way too much baby type stuff, way to much star wars stuff. They don't care about selling quality stuff, just stuff with the highest profit margins... I understand it from a business stand point, but THIS (the closures) is what happens from it. Their own fault. Like I would always go looking for MP line transformers stuff. in 5 years I have never once seen a MP line transformers toy. same with good Optimus Prime toys, not once have a I seen a good Prime toy in over 5 years. My son loves Nexo Knights, in the last few years they stopped carrying that lego line. I see so many cool toy reviews on the internet, but never see any of those cool toys at toys r us. The toys they do carry almost feel like an insult. Over simplified, stupidly simple toys. I know for a fact there is tons and tons of awesomely cool toys out there, but what toys r us carries is nothing but what the big CORPORATE companies want them to carry. They carter more to big CORPORATE companies than their customers. I don't feel sad at all their are in this situation as they are the ones who put themselves here. Thats what happens when you prefer to make companies happy over customers.

It makes your heart sink doesn't it? Anyone over 18 is going to remember getting their first bike from there or something and now it's gone. The buy out was done at a bad time and they will still walk away happy and loaded while people loose their jobs. The type of owners are not bothered in furthering or investing in the brand it is just to get what cash they can get then bin it off on to someone else and if they can't it's put into Administration/Bankruptcy where another company/bank will take more fees and often no buyer is found then it is liquidated.

Suncoast, Borders, B Dalton, Funcoland, Waldenbooks, Media Play, Sam Goody, Blockbuster Video, Hollywood Video, KB Toys, FAO Schwartz...so many childhood/teenage memories all lost to time... Sears, K-Mart, JC Penney, Barnes & Noble, GameStop, and as we're seeing now likely as well...Toys R Us will follow them. To know these places will all be gone and future kids will never know the joys of going through these places. It's saddening. While there's the convenience of ordering things online or downloading digital stuff, nothing can replace that feeling of going through a store looking through its selections and finding what you wanted or finding something you didn't know was even out yet.

Heath Vance Hey 80s kid, 90s kid here. I enjoyed my childhood just as much as you enjoyed yours--nothing about your decade was particularly better or worse than the decades immediately before or after, other than your nostalgia goggles blinding you to this fact. And guess what? Future generations will have childhoods that they find just as enjoyable, whether or not these corporate retail brands continue to exist. If the only thing that made you enjoy your childhood was spending money in stores, then I feel sorry for you. My childhood was filled with reading books, make-believe, playing outside, travel, cooking, family time at home, and video games. None of which required us to spend lots of time in stores. The kids of the future will be similarly happy and able to adapt. Wake up, the world has always been filled with change, and if you can't accept it, you will be left behind.

That widely panned new Star Wars movie didn't help at all. Since it came out, Star Wars toys have been attracting nothing but dust and markdowns. Add to that a bad Christmas season and the loan that was keeping them afloat got called. That brought this story into it's final chapter... 7.

Beverly Huttinger - This is true, but they were a big pillar of the toy industry, and this is going to be a devastating loss to companies. Because Toys are still popular, maybe not to the degree they once were. But still popular, and the advantage for toy companies was the availability of having large retail space and not having to compete in stores like Walmart and Target. Toysrus catered to that market demand.

Thanks for actually mentioning the real cause, the debt saddled on TRU by the ownership. It's the reason so many companies are going under right now, Toys R Us, Guitar Center, Sears, Gibson (slightly different reasons, but still debt). Basically a private equity firm borrows a ton of money to buy outstanding shares or just buy the company outright if they're not public. Then they use corporate funds to pay themselves back. When it's no longer profitable, they file bankruptcy and liquidate the company. They plan on it from the beginning. This is how Gordon Gekko made money in the movie Wall Street. It destroys the companies and a few people make a ton of money in the short term. If you're ever working for a company that sells to private equity, leave as soon as you can.

I was a kid in the 80's and have so many memories of going to ToysRUs with my dad on a Saturday afternoon. Sometimes we would go out to Washington Square and hit up the toy store on the way back. I remember getting Fashion Star Fillies, Sylvanian family, and so many Barbies there. We would go there to cruise through the 8bit Nintendo games back when the SNES was just out. I also took my son there, looks like he and I will be making a trip over to it this weekend to pick up something. I don't wanna grow up, I'm a ToysRUs kid! Part of my heart breaks with this announcement. Thanks for making this video, I know that I as well as many others appreciate it.

Growing up poor my parents seldom took me to toys r us. I vaguely remember being excited but very few times. I remember begging for something, crying, and I don’t wanna remember that. >^< Lastly, I remember my dad buying a green power wheels atv that he did not really have the money for. I was happier at home in my back yard. :,3

I had a Toys R Us very close to my house as a kid. I can still remember that distinct smell when you walked into the store and seeing all the lunch boxes with thermoses with the popular shows and movies on them at the time right when you walked in. Also getting the catalogue and seeing all the amazing toys inside. This was where I got my first Game Boy and many of my first Game Boy games, first bicycle, and my swing set. Thankfully, the ones in Canada are safe for now but as you said in this video this has really made me want to return to my childhood Toys R Us just one last time before its possibly to late. Thank you for posting this video, and capturing this piece of soon to be history. I do not think I have ever posted on your videos but I have watched your videos since near the beginning and love your work.

I've always said a failing company should die and no one should waste money trying to prop them up, but still sad as there's no other stores like it. There's not really anywhere else you can take your kid that has such a huge amount of toys that they can preview and see what they like, i've not got a kid yet but i can imagine it not being anywhere near as fun just pointing to the amazon store on an ipad, they're not going to know if they want it or not.

Toys R Us was such a HUGE part of my childhood. Had a single dad who took my older siblings and I there so often as a treat. I'm actually sitting in a restaurant across the street from my childhood Toys R Us store as I write this, I am going to go there with my husband tomorrow so that I can walk through there one last time. kfcnyancat actually, Amazon is the most to blame because of how large, diverse and quickly it has grown; it has Walmart scared to the point where they are HEAVILY pushing online ordering for both general merchandise and grocery. In fact they have an internal competition going on between stores trying to get customers to download the Walmart app and order something from Walmart. com.

argh! most outgrow toys, and kids of this generation are getting dumbed down with things like tablets and smartphones, where they spend their time looking at colorful things on a small screen than be creative and play with their toys. most of me old toys I have passed down to me little brother, who at least still enjoys playing with them more than he is sitting and watching tv or staring at a computer screen. I'm not trying to sound mean, but eventually, toys will just be relics of the past as more and more children get their hands on technology, and I don't see parents stopping that either.

charger master Ah, here comes the ol' blame the millenials schtick. Let me let you in on a secret: bad parents have always existed throughout history, and if you were to give any of them the option of plopping their kids in front of a TV or a tablet, they would have taken it, regardless of the era. Blame bad parents, not a whole generation. The generation that raised the millenials (the baby boomers) did the same thing by sticking their kids in front of the TV instead of giving them real toys or letting them play outside.

My local Toys 'R Us, in Altoona, PA, opened alongside a Dunham's Sports in a former Gee Bee Department Store (a Johnstown-area chain) sometime around late 1992. (They split the store's shell down the middle after Gee Bee as a chain went bankrupt, sold to Value City Department Stores (now also gone) and closed all their locations, Altoona included, in May 1992. Value City already had a Department Store not even two miles up the road (and also a Furniture Store near that, they ironically sandwiched a car dealership where a location of ANOTHER dead store chain, Town and Country Department Stores, once stood), hence their shuttering what is now the Dunham's/Toys 'R Us. I've only been in the Toys 'R Us once or twice before, most recently last Saturday, but I will miss seeing it. It's ironic that both the Kmart and the Logan Valley Mall-anchoring Sears location across the street from it will outlive it. Edit: Made the info much more accurate.

Toys R' Us was where I bought my first game console the PS1 $199.99 in 1997 at the age of 20. At that time I recently opened my first checking account. I wrote a check to pay for it but ChexSystems flagged it cause it was a new checking account. So I told them to hold it I'll come back with cash luckily they did so I gave them cash when I went back later in the afternoon. The first game I bought along with the PS1 was Ridge Racer 2 I think. Other than the check issue it was great just to buy my first game console from there. I remember going there when I was even younger it was a fun place to go.

Toys "R" Us originated in Washington in 1948 as Children's Supermarts. It originally had things such as bicycles and baby apparel. But the business really took wing when toys were added and the business was renamed as Children's Discount Supermarts. In the early 1960s its ads would feature a character named Dr. G. Raffe. By 1967, Dr. G. Raffe would say "Toys R Us" and Children's Discount Supermarts got its new name. I once saw local low-budget spot for Toys R Us with a boy and a girl tap dancing. By the time Toys R Us was a national business, Dr, G. Raffe morphed into Geoffrey, the company's very successful mascot.

When we finally got a Toys R Us here in Ventura, CA back in the mid 1980's, my friend and I would ride out to the construction site after school to check out the progress. We were just hanging out like "OPEN OPEN OPEN"! Gonna miss it! Speaking of KayBee, I LOVED the 80's redesign with the blue and red carpet and the mirrored ceiling. Dammit, now I am on a nostalgia roll. In our local mall, KB's predecessor was a store called Toy World. I remember buying Matchbox cars from there by looking through a listing book, and the worker would go in the back and bring out the chosen car.

alana No, they definitely failed to innovate. They waited too long on their online rollout, and when they finally did it, it was botched and lost them tons of money to Amazon. They also lagged on toy trends and had laughable management. They deserved to go under.

I knew that Toys R Us was in trouble the second or third time I walked into the store as a kid in the early 2000s. The high prices, disorganized, dirty store, and bad customer service already had me not wanting to go back after the age of 9. Now I'm about graduate from my ivy league school with an econ degree and go into the world of finance. Now that I know how corporations work, all I can say is, I'm surprised this chain didn't go under sooner. Like so many other American brands, it didn't reinvest in its stores, it made terrible decisions during the dot com era and immediately before and after, it didn't adapt to new market trends and technologies fast enough, and it had WAY too many underperforming stores that it kept open for no reason at all. This brand could still have been a thing if they hadn't started making dumb decisions 20 years ago (about the time their decline started), but they thought that markets and consumer taste would never change, and so they didn't change. Big mistake. I celebrate their closing as yet another victory of the free market. People forget that in an ideal market, those companies that do badly, close. Well, Toys R Us did badly, so they had this coming. Maybe now people will patronize locally-owned toy shops instead, or purchase toys online for cheap. Either way, consumers win.
