The 2021 FIDE World Cup is a 206-player knockout taking place in Krasnaya Polyana, near Sochi, Russia from July 12 to August 6. The prize fund is almost $1.9m, with $110,000 for the winner, while the finalists also qualify for the 2022 Candidates Tournament. The top 50 players, who include world nos 1 and 2 Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana, are seeded directly into Round 2.
Each match consists of two classical games where the players have 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 minutes to the end of the game, plus a 30-second increment from move 1. If tied, a playoff will be held on the 3rd day. There are two 25+10 rapid games followed, if needed, by two 10+10 games, then two 5+3, and finally an Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. No draw offers are allowed until after move 30. Official website: worldcup.fide.com

I'll copy and paste my below comment from his previous video. I've said this before over the years. What makes this chess channel great is each game is told as a story, without giving away the ending. Great clear concise pace, with dry humor added in from time to time. The explanations of the game and possible variations, again well done. I'm sure he can even make the snoozefest games exciting if he chooses. I've watched this channel grow over time and after watching his first monotone drab chess video. I wonder if he imagined he would become the number one chess story teller in the world. Great job, keep up your exceptional work.

Well he is human after all! We are very surprised indeed but it is not right as he played spectacularly and is holding form always. Just for comparison look at any other sport/game whatever, the world champion is not held as much of a god figure as we do in chess. Kudos to Duda still for this incredible feat.

Thought Carlson was brilliant in this tournament , so many times he went off course away from the main lines and still managed to push and in most cases beat all these top players … it’s not that he didn’t take it seriously but pretty sure he’s keeping his powder dry for the big title , this is where you’ll see everything he’s got

A titanic struggle between two Masters. Even when the end game has been waging for a while, still it is unclear who will win, or even if a win is a likely outcome. But it’s clear that this isn’t David vs Goliath; rather Goliath vs Goliath, a struggle between two absolute giants of the game. (Thanks Agad).

Is this going to be yet another year when it looks like Magnus is starting to show real cracks in his elevated status, but is saving his best ammunition for the WCC? We've seen this act all too often. I believe he is the most complete player ever, and still has time and desire to improve his game.

@5:40 after Qe2 Bh6 Rc2 Rxc2 there is also a possibility to play Be3 since Qxe3 is not possible. there is no need to give up N and B in this spot for white. the problem is that Nb5 is coming and a3 will drop shortly after which white's position collapses.
