Audiences everywhere were spellbound when “The Craft” landed in theaters in 1996. The story follows four girls -Sarah, Nancy, Rochelle, and Bonnie - who navigate life as witches. But as they join forces, they find that the conflicts between them are too much to handle. Gradually, their bond falls apart as Nancy’s powers grow out of hand.
In the end, things don’t work out so well for Nancy, Rochelle, or Bonnie, as Sarah steps into her power. If you’ve seen the film, you understand what leads to this conclusion. But perhaps there’s more to it than you thought. This is the ending of “The Craft” explained.

Absolutely agree. This was not made for the "the Sith are really the good guys/the jedi are the bad guys" crowd. Nancy got what she deserved - she accepted power and abused it. What Sarah did to Nancy was in direct payback for what she did. Sarah had no obligation to "be the bigger person" - she got what she gave times 3. You can't take an action and then escape the resulting backlash of that action. And no doubt Nancy also got retribution for messing around with Lerio and that temple. If anything you might stretch it and say that there was no real bad guy. Nancy grabbed for power that she couldn't handle and paid the price for misusing it. The other two had their powers taken away because the foolishly allowed Nancy to dictate how and when they used them. Sarah was the only one to stay true to herself and manage to see what was really happening with their spells.

At the same time, I can't but sympathizing with Nancy. That girl was living a hell at home feeling worthless and being abused all the time. And suddenly she got everything she wanted plus power, of course she couldn't handle it. It's like super poor people who win millions at lottery. Often they don't know how to handle it, spending on glam and flashy things and a year later they are broke.

I do welcome all kinds of alternative thoughts/interpretations when it comes to movies, but let's get it real...they weren't call the Bitches of Eastwick for nothing. Even when the others went to the occult store to steal, Sarah as the only one to pay for what she got. Did the others get delt a shitty hand? Maybe, but it seems Sarah was the only one to figure it out herself. Absolute heroine.

Sarah is the heroine. Lirio says it best. Nancy takes her power to a dark place, and it drove her crazy. She used her powers to hurt people. Sarah was cornered, and scared. She felt like she had nobody, and at this point she didn't think she had her parents either, because she didn't find out until way later that they were alive. She fought back when she heard her mother's voice. Not to mention Nancy and the others were actively trying to kill her. And the part at the end when Sarah throws the branch at the girls she knew exactly what she was doing. She wasn't trying to hurt them. It was a warning. Because they were still being bitchy and laughing at her as they were leaving, and she just making sure they knew who they were dealing with. Nancy is the villain. Her having a bad life might make you feel sorry for her. I do, but it doesn't make her any less of a villain. Nancy was jealous because everything came naturally to Sarah. She was the ring leader, and when Sarah came she took some of Nancy's attention. She redid Nancy's healing spell on Bonnie and it worked, she made Laura's hair fall out. She made Chris love her, and Nancy still wanted Chris to like her. To top it off her spells weren't working. So Nancy turned on Sarah, killed Chris, tried to frame Sarah, and make it look like she killed herself. You can't look at all that and then say she's not the villain.

I get you're trying to show off your wiccan know-how, but lets get real. Just because it has a fancy name doesn't mean someone calling it a knife is wrong. Wicca is a very versatile religion. The X3 thing is subjective and not recognized by all wiccans. Personally I believe in karma but the x3 thing never felt right to me, I don't invest anything in that. If you're going to be a know it all, then explain it all. Don't just belittle someone for calling a knife a knife.

@@chndlr18 I figured if one is reviewing a movie with witchcraft as a major theme, some background knowledge would be investigated. The full use of an athame isn’t shown in the movie, but the scene it is used in - it is being used ceremonially for directing energy. I guess the writers were using it to reinforce the vows they were saying. And yes, Wicca is a versatile religion. One single practitioner would use an athame (and other ceremonial tools) differently than a coven or circle. As for the karma vs x3 thing…..ok.

I love the Craft, I really do. I do have some issues with it, like the lack of development on Bonnie (played by the incredible Neve) and Rochelle's characters. They seem nice, and 'logical' and they both had their internal battles but for no reason they turn on Sarah and almost get her killed. Then they seem apologetic at the end but at the same time they were only at Sarah's house to check if she still has powers and not really to apologise. I do love Nancy and I understand she had the worst upbringing but you can't really make her the victim and Sarah the enemy. Of course Sarah is flawed, she liked Chris even though he treated her bad, she had her own emotional demons to fight and that could explain her actions. She was never as extreme as Nancy and what is more, she was NEVER hungry for power like Nancy. She was naturally gifted and did not feel threatened to see Nancy walking on water etc. The 3 attacked her first and then she fought back. This does not make her a villain. No matter how woke people are now, she was never the villain. If Nancy wasn't so intense and hungry for power the 4 of them would have just enjoyed their magic, nobody would die and probably still be friends. To sum up; Sarah, a natural witch, gifted but not hungry for power, made many mistakes with her friends and clearly had her own issues with emotions and relationships. Not a villain. Nancy was also gifted, hungry for power, alas she did have a lot of bad circumstances in her life and her actions can be excused. She was the antagonist to say the least. Bonnie and Rochelle, were a bit half cooked as characters. Both acted really nice from time to time and then were terrible with no real reason.

Completely agree. Just watched this again. I’ve always found it really good up until after the party scene, and then it all becomes a bit disjointed. Bonnie and Rochelle do a weird flip and become… evil, suddenly? Then they think they’re going too far, then they run away and then they come back at the end and they’re bullies? It takes a weird lurch that always threatens to take me out of everything that came before

They were closer to Nancy, who turned them against Sarah. When push came to shove, neither of them were brave enough to side with Sarah or even willing. They went from bystanders to participators, which was the point. They're FOLLOWERS, Nancy is a leader and Sarah is neither, she is her own entity.

See, your premise presumes that there's only 1 big bad. Yes, your theory does hold some water. However, while Sarah is powerful enough to enact revenge on the 3, Nancy is far from the abused innocent it sounds like you & the other Nancy defenders make her out to be. Many a serial killer goes through similar things, many times even worse. Does that make them sympathetic antiheroes? It just makes them sad villains. To me, the least guilty of the 4 main girls is Bonnie. (And no, it's because of my fandom of Neve Campbell.) Her only reason for being a part of the coven is to heal scars. At the end of the day, isn't that something we can all get behind. Bonnie's mistake is to ONLY concentrate on the outer scars. The ones inside being healed might have made her see the light sooner. Btw, Rochelle wanted revenge on bullies. Understandable, but not self improvement.

@BrokeredHeart

I think the aspect that's overlooked is the storeowner, Lirio, pointing out that, "True magic is neither black, nor white - it's both because nature is both. Loving and cruel, all at the same time." That's the underlying message beneath all of the characters in the film - kind and loving people who do horrible and hurtful things to one another. There really isn't a true antagonist in the movie, although arguably it's Chris (despite being spellbound) and his asinine friends who slut shame girls and spread malicious rumors about people around their school. The movie centers around the 4 girls of the witches coven trying to assert some control over their own lives, and establishing a new balance of power that gives them agency and public respect that they were all denied. That balance gets thrown off entirely when Nancy reaches for more and more power by invoking the spirit and using that magical power to simply remove obstacles from her path and torment those who would get in her way, ie Chris and Sarah. To try and look at this through a 2022/23 lens doesn't help, because the idea that Sarah is somehow the villain of the movie ignores and excuses the ways in which Nancy overstepped so many boundaries in order to get what she wanted. It's fine to have some sympathy for her in the end, but she is reaping what she sowed, the balance of power returned to Manon and she is left a shell of his vessel, punished for abusing his power and inflicting pain and suffering on those around her. I had hoped that The Craft: Legacy would revisit this idea of natural magic and the allure of mystic power in ways that a new generation would appreciate, and unfortunately, it had such promise to start out, and it botched the ending badly. This is one of my favorite witchy movies from my youth, so to see its sequel so poorly written and rushed was such a disappointment. Not even a bad cast, just a meh plot concept. If there was another movie that Greta Gerwig could get her hands on to make into a modern-day feminist critique on teenaged girl power struggles and magical powers, this would be the one. Understanding how girls interact and handle rejection, how they find solace in their friendships and urge each other to say and do things they wouldn't normally do of their own volition, that's something that could be explored more, and not in ways that are offensive to the original film.

The movie pretty blatantly tells u that magic and the world and nature are equally beautiful and cruel. Seems like ur just verifying what the movie already told us in literal dialogue. It ends in balance. Those who abused power had it taken and/or were punished. Sarah is just as capable of the same cruelty she was put through, but she balances it fairly and with goodness.

I always found it interesting that they created this “Manon” deity for the movie but there is an ancient Irish god named “Mananan Mac Lir” that presides over the sea. Wonder if that’s why things started happening when they filmed the circle casting an invocation scene on the shore since they were invoking “Manon” which is similar to a shortened version of “Mananan Mac Lir”.
