It makes sense that Willy Wonka would become cynical over the years because it’s explained in the 1971 film that one or more of his factory workers became involved in espionage, thus betraying Wonka and causing him to fire his entire workforce and shutter his factory. The other explanation is that this younger Wonka is based on the novelized version of him. Road Dahl apparently denounced the 1971 movie as apocryphal. To say he hated it is a major understatement. I like the new movie. He wasn’t indifferent towards Noodle and he actually put her well being ahead of his own. In the 1971 movie Wonka was blatantly unconcerned about the welfare of the children. I prefer the more compassionate, altruistic Wonka than the borderline psychotic one, even though I love Gene Wilder. Who sings in German while children are being asphyxiated by foam? Hitler perhaps…
@P.Aether
@P.Aether 6 ай бұрын
They couldn't make it dark and cynical if they wanted, because the production of the new one is explicitly meant for a target audience, which cannot be repulsed and made to think anything more than "good feelings" and to have bright, colorful emotions. The 1971 used so much color, but the camera and the editing made it look realistic and dark. I find that contrast to be really good, because it underlines the acting and role of Wilder. The 1971 version is for a broad audience and for multiple views which will help you analyze and find out more about the film with each viewing, because it has layers of meaning and symbolism. This current movie is good in my opinion, but it leans more to the commercial side of cinema, and for me it doesn't have very deep meaning. Barbie btw has a really good deep meaning btw, which goes to show that you can be modern, be commercially successful, and still be deep.

I loved Wonka (2023) and Roahl Dahl's book version. Went home and watched 1971's Willy Wonka. Besides the set and the music, I hated it. The story was changed too much. Most importantly, I didn't feel like Charlie was the humble and deserving child he was written as.

TC's Wonka is an idealistic young man who learns a lesson. Wilder's Wonks has obviously had many more experiences over the decades, interacting with people of a variety of traits and intentions. Being nearly that age myself, I can see how the TC Wonka could easily have become the Wilder Wonka.

It is important to understand that Wilder’s Wonka behaved as he did as part of a test. He had been spied upon and stolen from by the most greedy people around. His behavior throughout was a facade. He wanted parents and kids to not like him to see how they behaved. And, in the end, he wanted Charlie to see it all. Charlie did not get lucky in getting that golden ticket. “Slugworth” was there as soon as he won. You can see the transformation in Wilder’s character as Charlie returns the everlasting gobstopper.

Wonka is the backstory to Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory, the Johnny Depp version is a completely different universe due to the fact that we get wonka backstory in the Johnny Depp version. It masks sense for Wonka to be the backstory of the Willy Wonka in the original film, a lot can change due to the fact that in the original film Wonka clearly has been through a lot with some of his employees metaphorically stabbing him in the back by taking his recipes. Just saying. I freaking LOVED the movie!

Ah, you made a mistake in the 1971 movie. Slugworth is not Slugworth but an employee of Wonka, and it is all a test to find the right person to take over the factory. So the question in 1971 was, was it all an act till the very end when Wonka is the actual happy-go-lucky man. But the Wonka is worth seeing. Its really a good movie.

I think you miss the point about Wilders Wonka and the use of contract law. He already knew that Charlie Buckett was probably going to be his successor. He just had to be sure about Charlie’s honesty. Some details of Wonka 2023 are rather cleverly implied to connect with the Wilder Wonka . The lost Sovereign in the sewer grate . The use of the crooked contract. And probably several items I missed. Questions left unanswered. What happened to the Dog? And more importantly, how does Slugworth regain control of the company. At some point two things may have to happen. Something must happen to explain why Noodle doesn’t have control of Slugworth Candy Inc. and Why Wonka’s faith in humanity is again challenged and the factory closed and restaffed by Umpalumpii. Does Wonka have his heart broken by or through Noodle??

I loved WONKA! However, I will say, I feel like it contradicts all the backstories in the 2005 version. Given all those backstories in Johnny Depp's version, I was expecting to see a story that, in a way, included those rather than what we got. This does, however, bring a lot of elements from the 1971 version (Wonkatania, chocolate river, oompa loompa, etc.)

Like it's pretty clear they are intentional connections to the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in this movie, but think it would be better if this Wonka takes place in it's own continuity. Maybe if there are plans to do Sequels, maybe have one of them be a Reimagination of the Original Story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with a few key differences just to show it's not in the same continuity as the classic movie. For Example, you know that plot point in the original movie where "Slugworth" approaches Charlie and the other Golden Ticket Winners and tasked them to steal Wonka's Everlasting Gobstopper for him, but the Twist being that "Slugworth" was actually working with Wonka to do a Morality Tests on the Kids. In this Hypothetical Reimagination, have Noodle be in this role. Like she would have inherited what's left of Slugworth's Fortune and Company and would have done something with it, so to the Ticket Winners the story of a Rival Candy Company trying to get a one up on Wonka would be somewhat believable to the kids, and Noodle is someone who would do Favors for Wonka, so if Wonka ask her to help him with this Morality Test for the Golden Ticket Winners she would be more than happy to help.

You are far off on your understanding of Wilders Wonka forgetting his friends and family from earlier years and screwing Charlie over for not reading the fine print just like younger Wonka was screwed over himself.. you are taking it too literal. The underline moral of the Wilder Wonka was to always be testing people around him and their true intentions. You should watch wilder's Wonka again.
