@@JC-gw4jl Yeah, it's better to have 8K as an option and not use it. Unsure why people don't get this. And 4K 120 is pretty awesome too (as is 60). People have to remember there is no other mirrorless out there that does this that also can shoot 20 fps at 45 MP for photo. I'm a photographer first, video second. If you want pure video, the rumoured A7SIII might be better for that, but I think in a case like that, you might want to just get a cinema camera.

As an electronics engineer I am offended by the amount of technical BS in this comment section. A battery grip with active cooling would pe possible if the heat is transferred efficiently to the bottom surfaces. Even a passive cooling (battery grip made with heatpipes and aluminium) would be feasible and efficient.

There is a guy who uploaded his 8K R5 footage here on KZfaq and this is what he said about his experience From the author "The original oversampled 4K movie is crazily sharp. But after uploaded to KZfaq, the difference between oversampled and non-oversampled is smaller. So I may suggest non-oversampled 4K is enough for online video. If I took 8K video around 20-25 min straight, it will overheat but it still allows you to take 4K 30p at will. I have encountered the overheat issue at these conditions. Though it will overheat, I found the 8K video is totally usable and it is already remarkable for a small camera like this. Positive on this. 1) At Outdoor 32C, took 10 x 1-min long 8K (or 8K oversampled 4K) videos within 30min; took 30 min to go the next location (camera is ON/OFF for photo-taking during the period); Took another 10 x 1-min long 8K (or 8K oversampled 4K), then it will overheat and you cannot record 8K by then. However normal 4K 30p is still available and I have taken another 1 hour normal 4K footage without any heat problem (but 4K 60p is not allowed though) 2) At Indoor 23C, it can recorded a total 27 min 8K RAW video using a 512 CFexpress card. Then it will overheat and no more 8K. Then I have turned off the camera for 10 min, it will then allow another 10 min 8K after cooled down a bit (note: the camera can tell you how much time you can take 8K before overheating)"

as long as I have 4K at 60 for slow-motion thats all I need everything else is just added perks. And of course good dynamic range. For me the R6 is a perfect run and gun camera and hybrid camera when i need to switch between photo & video fast! My RED is great but i dint want to build a cinema rig everytime i need to shoot. Sometimes i need to be low profile and quick, i need auto focus i need to just point and shoot while still getting some cinema quality on the go. And thats why this camera is perfect its not ment to compete with a RED or a camcorder and shoot for 30min to 60min non stop. If you wanna film live shows or church events buy a camcorder. If you wanna shoot music videos,weddings,short films this camera can get the job done. Or at least work as a B camera to a A cinema Camera

So the canon rep said the camera can still shut off by just browsing through menus. That somewhat contradicts them saying it only has heat restrictions in 4k60 and 8k. I am waiting to see if the camera shuts down during normal operations if it gets too hot. This makes it pretty much unusable for any professional outdoor use. I regularly shoot in conditions well above 30 degrees c and not knowing if and when the camera will shut down is a level Stress I wouldn’t want to ad to everything else that’s going on.

Yeah, when you said add an external fan, that was so Sony a few years ago. So experience in dealing with the overheating in Sony cameras should directly apply, 1. use a dummy batter and power externally, 2. use an external recorder, 3. get a cage, and do no keep the display close to the camera. And 4. attach a small computer fan behind the display. And for last resort 5. Cold packs and ice chests.

This way they could finally start transitioning their pros over to mirrorless as we've kind of seen evidence of with the videos they've put out focusing on various pro photographers and genres.

Why RAW only in 8K? Is this a technical limit or another cripple hammer? I think even RAW in 2K would be extremely useful. Color grading and resolution are really two separate issues. You don't always need videos that are in 8K, though that option is really great if available.

It’s not really surprising that the camera will generate a lot of heat especially with 8k and 4K 120 frames - weather sealing and small body was always going to have some overheating when using those functions. For me it wouldn’t stop me from purchasing, you would just have to factor this into a video shoot if shooting in those modes that produce heat.

Did anyone believe that a camera, with such sealing level, would be able to record 8K without overheating??? Even in 4K, like Canon, other cameras overheat. Max, I Know that you look primarly to the video usability, but this is a stills camera with the 8K bonus for $4000. Adding the IBIS at the same level or higher than the micro 4/3 or probably the best auto-focus on the market, the ergonomics, the menu system, the colors, the superb lenses and the reliability that other manufacturers still don´t have it, really don´t understand this wave of complaints. Like compairing the R5 with the next a7s.. really? Who buys a sony a7s to shoot essentially stills? I don´t know anyone.

Might be interesting to see a specs list without any features that are limited. This would be helpful for professionals to decide if they should upgrade or not. Using camera for features that only work some of the time isn’t really feasible for anyone working in a professional environment. When you have multiple people standing around essentially getting paid by the hour and possibly a talent you only have for a short amount of time (eg a CEO of a company) the last thing you want is a camera that holds back everything because it needs to cool down.

Happy for those with Canon lenses (FYI, I was pro Canon shooter for 40 years). But these are not for me. If the new Sony as rumored, comes out with excellent video specs and no overheating plus no time limits, then no Sony owner would ever move to these Canons. If you are a Sony user, wait a bit. Sony knew what these Canons would cripple, and that is why Sony moved their A7SIII intro until after the Canon intro. Cheers

Be careful when talking abour CFexpress speeds. The number on the box/card are peak numbers. good cards will get you around 800 MB/s sustained write and lesser ones in the 450MB/s range. 8K RAW looks to be 2.1Gbps, which is around 250MB/s, not 325MB/s. Generally you want a good card that you know can sustain speeds well above what you expect to record at so that you don't drop frames. Also, if your footage is important, do not use an SD card. It might save you a few hundred dollars now, but the cost of shooting footage is way higher. You might be able to get away with a UHD-II card, but the NAND in a CFexpress is much more reliable, you get the option of faster speeds, and much faster offload. Don't spend $4k on a body, thousands on lenses, and then skimp on your media. Just don't.
@rsmith02

@@rsmith02 Yup, I've had four in the past year even from good brands like Sandisk on my A7SII (works great for a few months then often gets corrupted and needs reformatting). The most reliable have been the Sony M and Tough series. Never had a failure with them. I do run these cards hard with video - fill, playback, dump, erase, repeat. I suppose if it was photos you're in a different situation, you can lose a few frames here and there, but with video if the footage file is corrupt you're going to have a bad time.

Hi Fred, I shoot both Sony and Canon and happy with the new releases. Congrats to both and more with Panasonic G6 and Nikon Z6S/7S. We all benefit from this and I’m not loyal to any brand, just to my use cases and budget. To be fair, I think Canon’s Marketing is to be blamed here, they hyped up the 8K and all the video specs since Feb. They should of managed expectations better as R5 is a stills first camera with good video specs and limitations (depending on use cases). But from a selfish standpoint, if sales drop on R5 to say $3000 or under, I’ll be all over the R5 and maybe get 2 and solve the overheating concerns/issues! What are you shooting and/or upgrading too?

@@nomad0714 I'm doing mostly commercial and corporate shooting, little projects I don't have a team. I use multiple bodies to get all the features that don't exist in a single one, the R5 might simplify that for me. My workflow is exclusively 4k 10bit ProRes 422. Canon L glass. I work mostly with the GH5 and the Zcam E2 (4k120 uncropped) + Metabones x.64 when I can control the environment, and the Eos R when I need the AF for fast or improvised situations. The Zcam does ProRes internally, and I have a Ninja V for the 2 others. I also have an A7iii (that was my first camera 2 years ago) but I use it only for photography because it's small and faster than the Eos R, never for video (8 bit and terrible codec). With the R5 I will sell at least the Eos R and the A7, and if I'm happy with it I will get a second one or a R6 to replace my MFTs. What about you?

Thanks Fred! Like minded think alike. Started 1.5yrs ago as a hybrid shooter, shooting stills (sports, wildlife, products, portrait, street, and landscape) and videos (training, documentary, TVCs, and some small films). Since I have a full time job I do this on the side without being paid to learn the craft in return. I started out with the A73 but video didn’t cut it so went with the GH5 for video and af system wasn’t fast enough without a focus puller. Then moved to EOSR (thought I could use it as a hybrid) but it was too slow for sports and wildlife stills. Then moved on to S1H and it had everything except the af system, otherwise this one was perfect, no overheating, unlimited recording, 3 shooting image modes (ff, super35, pixel-pixel). Now I am using A9 for fast action stills and looking at adding A7S3 for video or moving to Canon R5 for stills to replace A9. Just not sure I will mix colors with stills and videos as still learning this. I have lenses for both system so good there.

This is why 8K, 6K and RAW is not necessary for your average consumer. Not many professionals I know shoot in those file formats apart from the ones who are working on tv shows and that’s usually 4K RAW, but it’s filmed on a proper cinema camera rather than a mirror less camera. I feel like now the roles have been reversed. Before Sony would pump out crazy features and put them in their cameras but they’d have reliability issues such as overheating etc Whilst canon were reluctant to add in features until they could guarantee 100% reliability. Fast forward to the past few years canon have been going crazy with the features whereas Sony have been focusing on reliability, colour science etc I guarantee you the A7siii will be the better camera and will have better reliability. I’ve heard battery life isn’t great on either R5/R6. A7siii will have fans similar to S1H, better battery life, flip screen and a body design similar to A7RIV. Most people don’t even have 4K TVs the standard is 1080, once 4K becomes the standard then we’ll need 6/8K etc but it’s totally overkill. We’re not making Hollywood movies
