I was literally looking at my phone's weather app earlier this morning, and I noticed it said that we were suppose to get 12 hours of daylight today. And I was thinking "that's impossible! The equinox is still several days away! How can that be?" Little did I know that you were going to post about this topic later in the day lol. Thanks for clarifying at a truly convenient time!

@NinjaWolfHybrid The Earth is closest to the Sun in early January and furthest in early July (these dates are slowly moving forward over a 23,000-year cycle), so the Northern Hemisphere currently has a longer spring and summer, while the Southern Hemisphere has a longer autumn and winter. The difference in solar irradiance is about 6% between these two dates, so seasons are currently less extreme than usual in the Northern Hemisphere and more extreme than usual in the Southern Hemisphere, though seasons are still less extreme in the Southern Hemisphere overall because the Southern Hemisphere has much more ocean cover and water changes temperature more slowly than land.

@@jamescook9125 Half of that still went straight over my head. I guess I need pics and perhaps a bit more of a breakdown in the language being used. Such as words like solar irradiance, as if us plebs are automatically supposed to know what that is. If I knew that, I wouldn't need to go to videos like this to try and learn things.

Great, so equinox is actually exactly what I thought it was. Thought there would be mythological or cultural twist, like a "it's actually the day that the French used to pluck their chickens, which people tried to time with the time when the earth's equator was directly facing the sun" type twist. Still love your videos, guys. Keep 'em comin'!

Yes, it is what I thought it was. That said, people should really stop using the outrageously elongated elliptical orbit in illustrations. It perpetuates the notion that we have winter 'when we're further away from the sun'. Minimum distance of Earth from Sol is roughly 146 million km, whereas maximum is only 152 million km...hardly enough of a variance to warrant these ridiculous egg-shaped orbits we see so often. Bad scientist!

Mid-Nite Drive-Thru, I thought the illustration was helpful and easy to understand, but it could've used a "not to scale" disclaimer. You're right that not to scale illustrations cause confusion.

@@stevenelliott216 great video, but have to agree, specially when you show the difference of days between summer and winter solstices towards the following equinox and, for someone less keen, it would feel as though the actual time difference, in days, would be pretty relevant, which it isn't - 2/3 days at most. You can add that as a disclaimer to the video description. Would probably help someone! Apart from that, great video.

"When the earth's axis isn't pointing towards or away from the sun, at all". Hmm, I think you'll find, Joe, that the earth's axis is pointing in the same direction all year 'round (apart from the minor polar motion) - it's how and why we get seasons. Your statement would make more sense if the animation had been from a view above the plane of orbit, rather than the side view (with it's incorrect moving axial positioning) as shown.

That last bit on Acceleration experiments and observing a distinction between Acceleration and Gravitation is very important. Gravity is a force, it at least produces waves, and Acceleration is merely a symptom that can be made by more forces than just gravity, In a long term space flight, would a fake Gravity chamber being rotated at high speeds be enough to protect the samples from low gravity effects?

Just a note: for annotating your graphics it might be helpful to realize that some of your audience is in the southern hemisphere, meaning that the annotations in a video like this don't fit our frame of reference. We may be accustomed to making the flip mentally, but notes on the graphics might be more considerate especially if someone here is using videos like this as visual aids in class.

Why wouldn't we consider sunset to be the entire event from when the disk of the sun touches the horizon until it is completely gone? We do say the sun is setting don't we? For that matter, sunrise would be looked at the same way. So if you factor in the event itself, you would average the two or just take the measurement at 50% coverage. Just curious.

Equinoxe is a great album by Jean Michele Jarre.....equinox really doesn't get things going around here, Mile High, Spring doesn't show up until after Mother's Day and Summer comes in about 15 minutes after that and hangs until October, Autumn hits and Winter sits in from Hallowed's Eve until Mother's Day. it's the mid-Summer and mid-Winter that make things interesting. April comes to visit in January usually for a few days or a week, and January reciprocates in April. And in Summer we've been getting out of the ordinary Fry Days, not the good kind that end the work week, (Fried-A, because your A$$ is fried by that end of the week)...Fry Days that soar over 100F and just frys all the flowers and leaves right on the stems. we're used to Every Afternoon Rain Showers with Thunder and the occasional tornado. not Azrionia Frying at Mile High. Equinox is a Very Good Reason to throw a Bigg Whoopin' Party, 2 times a year!
