Today I wanted to create an conversation of an observation that I have been keeping in mind for a long time now. Shounen Jump and animation as a whole is constantly changing and as a lot of series are completing one by one, it's time to talk about a potential end of an era. Thanks for watching, your support is greatly appreciated!

Oda gave and is giving his life for One Piece. We don't see an author be this dedicated to a single story very often (maybe Araki or like Tolkien). Do keep in mind that MHA and Black Clover will still end somewhere around 400 chapters or more, an insanely long length for a manga. Since 1987 (35 years), we’ve only seen 13 Shonen Jump manga pass 350 chapters: One Piece, Gintama, Bleach, Naruto, JoJo’s (in Jump itself), Rokudenashi Blues, Reborn!, Haikyu!!, Hunter x Hunter, Toriko, My Hero Academia, The Prince of Tennis, and Black Clover. That’s a super long runner only once every 2.7 years. If you count series past 300 chapters in this, Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Eyeshield 21, and Food Wars get added to the total. That still would only be a super long runner every 2.06 years. I just don’t think it’s reasonable to expect series to run for 700 chapters anymore. One Piece, Gintama, Bleach, and Naruto were anomalies due to the era they released in. Around 730 series have been serialized in Shonen Jump, only 5 (Kochikame + these) have lasted 700 or more chapters in Shonen Jump. That makes an average of 0.68%. Even if you count series that last a year or longer (~205 series), that’s still only an average of 2.4%- across 55 years.

I think it’s just a different world nowadays. With Jump caring more about the health of their mangaka and people’s shorter attention spans, it becomes increasingly unlikely that we will never see series as long as One Piece, Detective Conan, or JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure again. Now, is it still completely possible that we’ll see extreme lengths again someday? Absolutely! When One Piece ends, a spot for a long ongoing series will open up, and I wouldn’t be surprised if authors become inspired to write long fantasy adventure epics once again. I also would not count out Me & Roboco; it has that feeling of “the new Kochikame.” A series that lasts forever and ever and becomes an integral part of Jump history.
@texastech56789
@texastech56789 Жыл бұрын
The "shorter attention span" thing is weird to me. JJK will be close to 250 chapters, or 26/27 volumes. MHA and BC are near 400 chapters, at least 40 volumes. Reading 40 volumes of something is orders of magnitude more work and time consuming than consuming a couple of tik toks(a typical short attention span task). Hunter Hunter is 400 chapters (close in length to BC and JJK) and there is sooooo much information and lore that can be fit in 300 - 400 chapter series. Now, I'd agree if stories were 75 - 150 chapters. And maybe if the trend continues, we'll (unfortunately) see it get to that point.

I believe Jump's model is making authors NOT to plan for super long stories anymore, since they need to tell a short introduction to grab attention and THEN, if it sticks, develop their stories. Having long-term plans for them would be meaningless (discouraging even) if their series gets axed only 15 chapters in.

I don't think Shonen manga in Jump were that long to begin with. Because for the last 20 years , One Piece , Naruto , Gintama, Bleach and Jojo's Bizarre adventure are the only manga in the magazine to exceed 500 chapters and the other series , even the most successful usually didn't run for more than 8 years (about 350-400 chapters) . Series like Toriko , Haikyuu or Eyeshield 21 are among the longest series after the big three for the last 2 decades. The usual run of a series in the magazine is about 4-5 years ; Naruto , Bleach and One Piece are part of a timy minority . The Jump way of working in terms of length remained almost the same , it just keeps going without 2 of the big three .

One of the reasons why Goku and Dragon Ball Z are so well known is because it was at a time when anime was trying to make its way into the west and early video sharing through VHS tapes (and eventually Toonami) being passed around by friends, helped create a generational attachment. The vhs tapes being passed around helped because it was someone showing friends an adult-like cartoon with violence and blood from a foreign country like Japan.

Another thing that might be hard to realize here is stories like One Piece and authors like Oda are rare. A perfect combination of not getting axed, sufficient storytelling and drawing capabilities and talents, drawing speed, and having enough health and time to actually carry out decades upon decades of plot is, to say the least, not necessarily something the average mangaka has or could do. It seems like Long Running Shonen is ending, but the truth is Long Running Shonen has and always will be rarer than straightforward 100 or so chapter-longs. It feels like we were in an era of long running shonen, but really we were just in a weird time when 3 shonen authors met the aforementioned criteria, but it's not going to be over, they will recur irregularly, perhaps once every other decade, maybe twice a century, who knows, but in a sea of short stories and their authors there will be a longterm author in them every once in a while. Idk when the next big long story's coming, but it will definitely come, and it won't be alone, nor will it and whoever comes with or soon after it be the last, but the gaps between their arrival will certainly be filled with quick, high-impact stories.

With the end of all of these series comes the birth of new ones. Anime like One Piece, Bleach, Naruto, and Dragon ball have inspired many generations and will most definitely continue to inspire more generations to come. What we truly need is more series like Dr. Stone. I say this because when Dr. Stone released it was far different from the rest it was extremely unique, but as people continued reading they got bored of the concept. I believe this is because of how fast our attention spans have shrunk, not to mention that Dr. Stone has loads of dialogue. I also believe that the length of a series depends on 3 things, and how well the mangaka is able to do them. These are Plot, Consistency, and enjoyability. The manga's overall sales usually present how well the series is doing, and it also shows the mangaka that people care for his or her manga, which in turn gives the mangaka the confidence to keep writing. An example of this is One Piece. Oda stated that he didn't intend to make One Piece as long as it is. But because he knew that people adored his story, his world, and his characters he ended up writing way more than intended, and as a result One Piece has only continued to get better and better ever single chapter. One Piece has Plot, Consistency, and Enjoyability this is why it is thriving and becoming more and more popular like no series before.

I ultimately believe that a Jojo-like structure would be the most optimal structure for the new manga readers (and probably mangakas) of the world today simply because of how it doesn't require commitment to read all of them to enjoy and understand the story. The fact that the entire theme revolves around a bloodline means that people are rewarded differently based on the part that they have read. For casuals, the reward is to have read a good wacky and fun story while getting the reference songs of the stand names. For diehard fans, the reward is being able to understand the true motives of previous characters or have found easter eggs, but to understand the theme of the series as a whole. Every kind of reader is rewarded with that kind of story structure just as long as it is written and executed carefully, just like what Araki had done. The only problem with this structure is that since there are different protagonists per part, it is nearly impossible for this series to be a top 1-5 pick for manga readers. More often than not, people's top 1-5 anime picks are from animes series that focuses only on one main character with good side characters of which the reader/viewer have already been invested in the story or relate a lot to them. In JJBA for me, I really never felt attached to an MC unlike when I watch One Piece. I want to see Luffy's eventual coronation as Pirate King, being hyped for the next chapters to come since the long running Manga's on it's final chapters. On the other hand, I really don't know what to expect with Jojolands and Jodio as a new protagonist, so my feelings with him as the MC are neutral for now.
@luckyowl10
@luckyowl10 Жыл бұрын
I agree that JoJo's structure is optimal for modern long works. But it takes a LOT more planning, writing and talent to pull off, than your average story that goes forever. Most mangakas can't manage that or don't have the time/energy to plan it. Every part in JoJo is almost like a soft reboot of the series with some connections to the past. Every part has a different main theme, location, characters, villain and above everything else it needs to work as an independent story. Like in the past, when movies in a series were made to stand on their own, not just as sequels. If Shounen Jump will give mangakas white cards that says they have 50-100-150 chapters to set up their story and they can't be axed. I believe they will try it, but nowadays mangakas struggle to stay alive for 10-15 chapters and they wonder if they will be axed.

I think that a big problem is the fact that most of these mangaka’s biggest series are their first significant series. We talk someone like Oda and someone like Urasawa. Urasawa is more of a mangaka who writes so many different stories, but Oda’s legacy is pretty much strictly One Piece. Which is why I’m excited for Isayama’s next work, because he’s a great writer, and I think that he can learn a lot from Attack on Titan to create an even better story. If he wants to retire that’s fine too, but I think that since his drawing style and writing has improved so much, not to mention all of the praise that he receives as a writer specifically, means that he’ll probably have a lot of people on board immediately.

I think the future of story telling is like with light novels such as Trash of counts family, and some 4 person group or less deciding to turn it into a webtoon or manga. That way the creator can write the story and maybe draw small illustrations and the artists/editors can be incharge of the digital webtoon. ToCF now has almost 1000 chapters and just started part 2. I don't know how in the world they're gonna turn it into a webtoon, but you can get 3 chapters a week with light novels.
@Fanimei

I also think part of the reason why the long-running manga era is ending is because in this day and age we have so much content at our fingertips, and so much content to compare each other to. If we take it back to the days of when all the big 3 and Dragonball were releasing, Shounen Jump was the most popular serialization and it still is to this day, so naturally those exposed to manga only knew of SJ. They didn't have smartphones to open an app and start reading manga, they had to buy weekly magazines, or the physical volumes. If we compare the first chapters of the big 3 to newer manga, the level in which they hook a reader in is drastically different. For the kind of stories like the big 3, you definitely need a good amount of chapters to set everything up. But a relatively new one like Promised Neverland where it completely hooks you in on the first chapter, in my belief is a big result of having so much manga we can read that SJ needed new material which could grab people's attention span fast, and essentially make dough quicker.

Not manga, but with Korean mahwa becoming more prominent the last few years, I figure it's worth at least some mention. God of Highschool ending a few months ago with around 550-ish chapters and Tower of God (which just came off a 6-7 month hiatus not too long after a 1 year hiatus) is currently 560ish chapters and supposedly only 20-50% of the way through the story. There's also a Chinese manhua with well over 2000 chapters. As for manga, as sad as it is, as someone who grew up on the HST and DBZ, these super long running series seem to be outliers more than the norm. Granted, there are some series,like Berserk, that have been running as long or even longer, but have less chapters due to having monthly or irregular release schedules. For another example, AoT ran for I think 11 years, but due to being monthly, it only has 139 chapters. You also have a series like Tsugumomo (basically softcore hentai moxed with battle shonen) that's been running since like 07 and currently has 155 chapters. Also granted, Berserk and Tsugumomo are seinen, but it's still worth bringing up. Only non-Jump shonen I can think of with 500+ chapters are Fairy Tail, Pokemon, Kingdom, and Inuyasha

Jump still have Witch Watch that still don't havr anime and don't be surprised if Twin Star Exorcist return with a remake after 2024. I think Jump wants various hits that can be a sucess, than a single one. And if they need to acept the breaks, so be it, like they did with Tabata from BC. Oda is alien kkk, he don't stop work, even OP mangá have week breaks every mounth. Jump knows, that if they have 3, 4 anime/magá that are popular, they can get the money they want. This is definitely a trend but I also think that this may be more cyclical. To make that kind of long running series you need an author with that kind of vision and desire but then also to reach the level of sustained success that would allow them to do that AND then you need a story that could support it. MHA has the structure and success but Horikoshi wants to end it. Mashle and Undead Unluck never had the right structure for it. Kaiju is the one that I think could last a very long time if the author wants to, but it's hard to say, and because of it's slower release schedule it would take a much longer time. I think the other aspect of it that has led to shorter series is that ther's a view that these ultra long series waste a lot of time. So I think there's a concious effort by some modern mangaka to have more impactful chapters which of course moves the story along quicker. But if this remains a trend then you could see the appetite for slower stories grow so that more longer running series have a chance to be created.

I felt like i couldnt get fully invested in JJK because it covered three arcs worth of content in a 20 something episode season. Its actually astonishing to see how many chapters the manga has because it doesnt feel that long. I got a shonen jump how to make manga book for christmas and it has all th current hitters like Denji Luffy Yor and others but looking at it Luffy is this character thats survived decades of seasons, hes the elder, the last one left past naruto bleach and the rest. Once hes gone, therell only be new blood left. My main story idea falls in line with how long winded my writing can get, and i can clearly see it going to naruto/one piece numbers easily, but this video is very eye opening about how the reality of the business really is and good to keep in mind. I actually dont like shorter manga/anime because i want to be invested in a world and have a good pacing. Mha has started to lose me slightly because the pacing has increased too fast and there's a lot of development in a short amount of time. With One Piece, its an end of an era. I can only imagine one piece ending will only inspire more people to be a manga artist with great stories just like whitebeard going out saying "The one piece does exist" inspiring the pirates who lost their will to find the one piece.

I feel like this is just a new development in humans honestly if we want to get deep 😂 tik tok for example is short for entertainment. People are gearing towards shorter faster attention. People won’t even pick up a book nowadays is it had 300-400 pages

This isn't true at all. If anything were cutting down "attention span" it's more people struggling with disability with things like covid, more people facing poorer working conditions as labour rights are under attack in so many countries. People have less time and energy right now for many reasons but absolutely still read books.

No, its due to the current era, its because we watched it as kids, when anime wasn't quite as common, and the internet not as developed. Back then, watching anime made you seem weird, still today but not nearly as much. The stuff we watched then as kids made us excited, if you had to re-watch the anime now as an anime you haven't seen before I guarantee people would be much more critical. When you got into anime, the big ones were always recommended, people had strong opinions, so it made the big anime bigger and basically pushed them into success. Now, so many people watch anime, they watch different genres and recommend different anime. People also became more critical about the anime they watch. They have higher expectations for anime and if its not met they just move on. A lot of other reasons I don't have the effort to type out/can't think of off the top of my head.

Its kinda sad theres gonna be less and less kids having characters to grow up on. like a goku, or a naruto. but on the plus side, they at least have multiple shows available. but honestly we could be the in a new era of mass production, like the number of new big shows running in the last few years has been interesting

I wouldn't mind waiting fewer years than a decade to read the finale chapter, as long as authors get to complete their visions and write proper conclusions.

Eh. This video is definitely made from the perspective of a consumer, not a mangaka. Having a story told in the way it needs to be told, whether it's 1 chapter or 1000, is every mangaka's dream. There's also financial incentives
